Infernal Entity: Evolving With My Demonic System-Chapter 47: Annoying AI
Axel stayed in the alleyway far longer than he should have.
He paced slowly from one end to the other. His boots scrapped itself against cracked concrete as his eyes kept returning to the same spots over and over again. The bloodstains. The melted floor. The marks on the wall where bodies had hit hard enough to leave dents.
Everything that happened tonight was written all over this place.
Except the sword.
He stopped near the center of the alley and rubbed his face with both hands, breathing out slowly.
’Who saw me...?’
That question kept looping in his mind over and over again.
Whoever it was had been there before the fight, that much was obvious and they didn’t interrupt. They just waited and watched like it was a show and then they took the Godrend and left.
Axel also realized another key fact. Whoever it was must have also seen Dane Cornwall’s body being absorbed.
They must have witnessed the corpse dissolving and vanishing like it never existed.
And probably worse than that, there was Rick. They saw him use the Demonic Mind Wipe on Rick. That wasn’t good and Aurora did not miss the chance.
"Oh, indeed, it’s not good" it said with a voice that was smooth and smug.
"You erased a witness’s memory after committing murder. Humans tend to frown upon such things. Especially giant corporations."
"Would you shut up, please " Axel muttered quietly.
"Oh? I merely speak the truth," Aurora replied.
"If Oval Corp learns that you used mental erasure to conceal a killing, your troubles would grow... how do humans say it? Monumental."
Axel pressed his palm against the wall and leaned forward slightly enough to show concern.
"I didn’t have a choice," he said. "Rick would’ve lost his mind. He would’ve told someone. I had to do it. Even worse, he called me a demon. I don’t know about you, but that’s a very specific guess..."
"And yet," Aurora said mockingly, "You still left your precious mythic blade behind like a careless child leaving a toy in the dirt after soiling his pants."
"That has nothing to do with whether someone was watching!" Axel snapped.
"If they were there, they saw everything anyway. Sword or no sword!"
Axel was right in that regard. It didn’t really matter if he forgot the Godrend sword or not. Whoever saw what they saw, saw it regardless. The sword was only evidence, which was still a problem.
But Aurora laughed at that. It seemed to derive joy from taunting its host.
"A delightful excuse," it said. "One befitting an Imp."
Axel scoffed.
"My body was being broken down. I had just evolved. Rick passed out. I wasn’t thinking straight."
"Thinking has never been your strength, has it?" Aurora mocked
Axel ground his teeth. The more he thought about it, the worse it got.
Whoever that mystery person was didn’t just witness something illegal. They witnessed something impossible.
A human becoming something else, a body dissapearing and a mind being erased.
If that information reached the wrong ears, Axel wouldn’t just be expelled.
He’d be dissected and studied in some government lab
Axel took one last look around the alley, then turned away since there was nothing else to find here.
The walk back to the dorm felt longer than usual.
Through out the walk back, Aurora did not let him rest.
"You know, some demons would have burned the alley to ash. Ensured no witnesses and no evidence."
"I’m not like that, I might be a demon but I’m still human..." Axel replied.
"Hahaha!" Aurora laughed. "Human? Yes, yes, of course. You are soft, fragile, heroic and look where that has led you."
Axel stopped walking for a moment.
"You’re really enjoying this, aren’t you?" he asked.
"I enjoy watching you stumble," Aurora replied honestly. "It is educational."
Axel resumed walking.
"Next time," he muttered, "I’ll be more careful."
Aurora scoffed.
"With your current habits? I doubt you could defeat an Infernal cockroach."
"Hey, I’m stronger now," he shot back. "I could take a few Spectras easily if I had to."
"You?" Aurora said, laughing again.
"With your forgetfulness and emotional attachments? You would trip over your own Infernal tail."
"I don’t have a tail!"
"Yet!"
Axel went quiet. Soon, he reached the dorm building just before curfew. The halls were silent now, lights dimmed, security patrols minimal. He slipped inside without issue and headed straight for his room.
Rick was still asleep on his bed, breathing evenly, his face remained calm like nothing had ever happened.
Axel stood there for a moment, just watching him.
’Good,’ he thought. ’The mind wipe worked.’
His gaze shifted to the empty bed across the room and landed on Ares’ bed.
Ares was still in the second-year block. Still fighting and probably still surrounded by seniors who wanted to break him.
That made Axel wonder if the second-years didn’t get any sleep. Or did they just basically turn their block to a hotel building.
Axel sat down on his own bed slowly.
’I could help him now,’ he thought. ’I’m stronger and faster. I’ve got better skills. I could actually do something to get him out.’
Aurora immediately responded.
"You would be flattened in a second."
"Can you stop reading my thoughts?" he asked.
"Uh...No."
"That’s an invasion of privacy," he said.
"You are my host," Aurora replied. "Your thoughts are... verily accessible."
’There has to be a way to turn her off.’ Axel wondered
Aurora went silent for half a second.
Then—
"I would strongly advise against that," she said quickly.
"Oh?" he asked with a smirk.
"So there IS a way."
"You would be depriving yourself of vital guidance." She warned.
"All you’ve done since I evolved is mock and insult me every little chance you get. If you’d actually offer ACTUAL guidance, I probably wouldn’t even have realized that you’re actually a bug in my damn system!"
"If you turn me off, you would miss my charming presence."
"I’m good. Thanks..."
He opened the system interface and began scrolling through the menus. Stats. Skills. Missions. Settings and every other tab he could find.
"Axel," Aurora warned. "Do not do this."
He ignored her and kept digging.
Eventually he found it.
"You know," she said, "many demons would kill to have a guide like me."
"Yeah... just not this one."
"...You will regret this."
Axel looked at the option one last time.
"See?" he said calmly. "I’m not so dumb after all."
And with a single thought, he turned it off.
"Finally... silence."
