Chapter 41: The Second-year Building

The second-year block stood on the south wing of Oval Academy, separated from the rest of the school by wide training yards and long stone walkways.

From a distance, it looked similar to the other year blocks, tall and rectangular, made of reinforced steel and dark alloy walls, but the closer one got, the more obvious the differences became.

Every year had its own building, just like the dorm complexes, male and female alike. First-years stayed east. Third-years occupied the west wing, nearer to the combat arenas and advanced labs. The fourth-year block stood farther back, isolated and guarded, almost like a fortress within the academy.

Unlike the first-year block, which was constantly supervised and filled with rules, the second-year building felt loose. Second-years were trusted to handle themselves, and that trust often turned into arrogance.

Compared to the third-year block, the second-year building lacked structure. Third-years trained with purpose. They prepared for real missions, real threats. The second-years, however, were in that stage where power had grown faster than discipline.

That made the place volatile.

Students from one year had no reason to be in another year’s building unless it was necessary. Today was one of those days. A mistake had already been made, and now they were here.

Axel and Rick stood in front of the entrance.

The doors were tall and made of steel, sealed tight from the outside. No handles. No visible access panels.

At first glance, it looked abandoned, but the noise leaking through the thick metal said otherwise.

Voices echoed from inside. Laughter. Shouting and the dull sound of something hitting a wall.

Rick’s hands were shaking at his sides.

"This is a bad idea," he whispered. "Axel, this is really bad."

Axel noticed the way Rick’s breathing had sped up, short and uneven. He reached out and grabbed Rick’s shoulder firmly.

"Breathe," Axel said. "Slow down."

Rick tried, but his chest kept rising too fast.

"They’re second-years," Rick said again. "They won’t listen. They won’t care."

Axel also felt the same unease crawling up his spine, the same warning instinct telling him that they were stepping somewhere they did not belong. But Ares was already inside and they needed to know how he is.

Axel was also panicking inside, but he didn’t show it. Rick looked like he was about to have a massive crash out and Axel couldn’t afford to join him. One of them needed a clear head now.

Axel stepped forward and raised his hand. He knocked once against the metal door.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the locking mechanism inside clicked and the door began to open.

A large hallway that stretched endlessly came into view. Different rooms, all connecting to the hallway lined up all the way down to the end and another massive metal door stood at the end.

Stdents walked in and out of the different chambers, some were carrying mythic weapons and gears. Weapons that Axel was sure were high grade weapons.

They all moved around without acknowledging Axel and Rick. It was as though no one knew they were here, so who opened the door for them?

"State your business."

A deep bass voice echoed behind them. Both Rick and Axel instinctively turned around, only to find a second-year student standing behind them. How did he even get there? Teleportation?

"I said state your damn business." The student repeated again, causing Rick to shift uncomfortably.

"We’re looking for our friend," Axel said steadily. "He was brought here earlier."

The student stared at him for a moment. He was probably wondering why Axel seemed so calm.

"A first-year," he said flatly. "In the second-year block?"

Axel nodded. "Yes."

Silence followed. Then the student turned without another word and started walking down the hallway.

"Follow," he said.

Axel hesitated only briefly before moving. Rick followed closely behind him, his steps uneven.

As they walked, a curious Axel decided to use the ID skill on whoever that was.

The information appeared instantly.

[Name: Kayden Lee]

[Race: Human–Mutant]

[Ability: Teleportation]

[HP: 20/20]

[Level: Spectra 5]

’20 HP?! Mine is just 10.’

His HP wasn’t the only thing. Teleportation explained everything. The door. The silence. The way the student had appeared behind them just like that. A Spectra 5 second-year with teleportation was not someone they could afford to provoke.

As they moved deeper into the hallway, other students began to notice them.

Conversations paused, heads turned and whispers followed.

"What are first-years doing here?"

"Did they get lost?"

"Bold."

The looks were not curious. They were more of territorial looks. They were wondering what a bunch of first years were doing in their turf.

Rick shrank closer to Axel, his fear was becoming impossible to hide.

The second-year escort stopped in front of the massive door at the far end. He placed his hand against a panel beside it. The metal doors slid open with a low rumble.

Noise flooded out immediately.

Chanting and cheers. The sound of impacts. The sharp crack of flesh meeting flesh.

Axel’s eyes widened.

Inside was a large combat chamber with reinforced walls. Spectator platforms packed with second-year students and in the center stood a circular arena.

And inside it was none other than Ares.

His face was bloodied. One side of his cheek was swollen and his uniform was torn in places. Fresh bruises covered his arms, but he was still standing and fighting.

Axel watched as Ares ducked under a punch, twisted his body, and slammed his elbow into his opponent’s ribs. The other student stumbled back. Ares followed up instantly, driving his knee forward and sending the opponent crashing to the floor.

The room erupted with noise.

"Winner, Ares!"

Axel’s heart pounded.

Before he could fully process what he was seeing, another student stepped forward into the ring and the cheers grew louder.

Axel and Rick stared at the scene before them in confusion.

Why was Ares fighting second-year students and how many more opponents were they planning to throw at him?
