Chapter 178: Last Words

"No! That’s bullshit!"

Almost instinctively, Rise shouted. Shaking his head and lowering his head, not meeting Kamille’s crimson eyes anymore. His body was shaking as he refused whatever shit Kamille spouted.

"There’s no way." Rise looked at Kamille on the bed and pursed his lips, unwilling to even utter the word.

His knuckles went white, holding Kamille’s hand tightly.

If he did that, then was everything he did useless? More than revenge, Rise’s goal was Kamille. All of this stemmed from that one goal. He wanted to make Kamille his, to make the person he loves fall for him.

This sounded simple, but Rise had been striving for that for years, and he did not care what others said. Getting revenge was on the agenda, but on the premise that Kamille was his.

If not, what even was the purpose of his revenge? What was the purpose of fighting with destiny? He finally took revenge on himself? Sure, but what then?

Would he be really happy after that? No. Rise knew that he would not. He was a very self-centered person. He never once denied that claim about himself.

They said, he was a villain? Okay, Rise would agree with that a hundred percent. He never once tried to be a hero, anyway. He only did what he wanted to do, or things he liked.

Rise had been living his years with that thinking. Since he was a child, he had already engraved in his mind that he only had himself. He only had to trust himself.

He became strong for himself. He saved dozens or hundreds of lives, for himself. That was only an enjoyment; he did not care if there were casualties or rescued because of his actions.

After all, he was the whose life was on the line fighting, and he did not need gratitude for that or care for resentment and grievances. His life revolved around himself. That was very evident throughout his life.

Until... he met Kamille.

Kamille, who cared enough to search for him when he was trapped in that godforsaken place. Someone he even offended, but still saved him in the end.

If that were all, Rise would not be too obsessed with this person either. However, Kamille reached out his hand at a moment he least expected someone would.

He became that light when Rise expected the worst. And for the first time since he was young, Rise opened up and finally thought... why not trust someone again?

Why not... reached that offered hand and grasped it as his life depended on it? And he did. He would always make that choice.

His life did not change much; Rise was still Rise. But since then, there was now Kamille in his small and protected world, and it seemed to be expanding.

Although it never expanded much, and had to halt in the end.

"Ridiculous." Rise shook his head, and finally looked up again, and now glared at the person who claimed a memory of his beloved. His gaze immediately filled with murderous intent, but only a facade to look strong.

Because... he was struggling to hide the pain from what he just heard.

"Leave... him? No! I’ll never do that!" Rise shouted through gritted teeth. It was a wonder how he even finished from how his lips were trembling. His eyes narrowed and became suspicious, "And, how can I trust you?"

This was a weak retort, he knew. Rise wanted to appear wary and angry, but then... he was still weak with that face.

"I’m not saying you’ll leave for good." Kamille now looking outside, as if not wanting to see Rise like this.

It seemed in his memory, a Rise who struggled to conceal his heartache was relatively new. And even as a memory, Kamille did not want to witness it.

The space was now getting smaller and smaller, and any minute now would disappear into the void again.

"You won’t be able to leave me for good even if you want to."

Kamille had his own twisted feelings, not different than Rise. Maybe this was all the reason they struggled to change that damn fate designed for them.

Rise stiffened, eyes widened slightly. The rage he was feeling seemed to pause, and only surprise lingered.

"You only need to leave for now. You don’t need to disappear from my life as well." Kamille took a deep breath and turned to Rise, whose jaw dropped.

"Y-You..." Rise mouthed, shocked.

The cracks in Kamille’s face now widened significantly, and red light shone from them. He did not seem to mind and did not react or answer Rise’s doubts about this.

"Rise, being with me will make it harder to fight that person and the one behind all this. You know how deeply intertwined my life is with everything, and that will make you... also involved deeper."

Kamille stared at him, wanting him to understand.

"This is also a strategy. Leave the plot you know, linger in the boundary of it." A small smile appeared on his lips when a realization showed on Rise’s face. He nodded. "I’m here to tell you this. I’ve been here for so long and don’t know how many resets have happened. And this is the first time you arrived."

He stepped closer and looked down.

"It meant... if another reset occurred, I would not be there to tell another you." His voice filled with alarm and caution. "So, we have to succeed this time. And, you being here meant... this reset is one of the highest chances we have."

His voice became weaker as time passed. And so his whole being was like a broken mirror ready to shatter any minute.

Rise shaken to the core, almost reached out, and Kamille alert stepped back immediately. He looked at Kamille, who was sleeping. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

"He will be confused, but he’s smart and will see through it. Use him... use me to the best you think of to succeed. Rise, remember this." His gaze returned to Rise and spoke faster.

"You can’t directly interfere with what will happen, at least not you. Yes, use others and be only the guide to disrupt, and never use the same person twice.

The world doesn’t care about the others deeply, unknown to its plot, and uses that as an advantage."

His meaning was very clear to Rise. As someone named in the plot, his actions were like a light easily noticeable. Maybe the reason nothing excessive happened yet was that the plot itself never started.

And Epsilon was not here. The world could tolerate any changes for now. And what he did earlier to save those who had to die was already on the boundary of the world’s bottom line, but still, in the end, would not have changed things much.

Rise’s expression changed. Thankfully, he became cautious and never interfered with others, yet and tried to test first before going through his plans.

"Then, when can I return to the surface?"

Almost a whisper, Kamille’s voice lingered.

"Once this world wants to finally take over you."

Rise’s eyes snapped open, mouth wide.

How did you know? Rise’s mouth wanted to say this, and in the end, could only mouth it.

Kamille smiled but did not reached his eyes.

"I... Kamille is the same."

Rise’s heart jumped, and yet before he could react to that. His focus was caught by how Kamille’s body finally shattered. He wanted to shout, but found himself powerless to move.

He could only watch as Kamille slowly disappeared, but with a sad smile lingering on his lips.

"And..." He seemed to sigh and mouthed something, too weak for Rise to understand.

When his body almost disintegrated, a black fire surrounded Rise and Kamille. His crimson pupils seemed to widen, as if shocked by what happened, but Rise did not notice it.

His mind was too chaotic to think of that.

He only heard Kamille’s last few words, but could not understand them, and then it was darkness.

[...thought the variable... it’s you...]
