Chapter 301: The Crown Prince’s Sacrifice

Perhaps dying would not be so bad after all.

At least then he would not have to carry the burden of guilt.

Just as that thought crossed his mind, Rong Qinglei suddenly appeared in front of him like a miracle.

"Quick, go! Mingxuan, hurry up and leave!"

It turned out that although Rong Qinglei had entered the death gate, he had been fortunate enough to break through the deadly mechanism inside.

After all, he was a prince, he could hardly die in such a place.

"You... Are you alright?"

"For the moment, yes. But if you keep sitting here like that, then both of us will be in trouble," Rong Qinglei said with a faint smile.

His expression looked relaxed, yet not entirely so. He added, "Let’s move quickly. If we hurry, we can still make it out alive."

"Alright!"

Knowing that Rong Qinglei had not died immediately made Yue Mingxuan feel much better.

Rong Qinglei grabbed his hand and led him swiftly through the formation.

However, the hair at Rong Qinglei’s temples had already been dampened with sweat as if the effort was taking a great toll on him.

"You’ve only just recovered from a serious illness. Don’t push yourself too hard," Yue Mingxuan said when he noticed. "Just tell me which way to go. I know lightness skill too."

Rong Qinglei only smiled and reassured him briefly before continuing to pull him forward.

What Yue Mingxuan could not see was that inside Rong Qinglei’s chest, a thin silver needle had embedded itself there and it’s moving slightly with each beat of his heart.

When Rong Qinglei had entered the death gate earlier, even though he had been extremely careful, he had still been struck by a hidden weapon.

He had forced his way out by sheer determination and relying on his lightness skill alone.

But if he tried to break out of the formation while bringing Yue Mingxuan with him, he would almost certainly exhaust the last of his strength.

He did not regret it, nor did he believe that Yue Mingxuan had caused his death.

All he thought was that as long as Yue Mingxuan could leave this place alive, that would be the best outcome.

What he feared most was that Yue Mingxuan might blame himself. Yet at this moment, he had no better solution.

Yue Mingxuan did not know much about the art of Qimen Dunjia, but Rong Qinglei understood it thoroughly.

After all, learning such things did not require especially high martial skill.

Rong Qinglei had always been extremely intelligent since childhood.

Once he saw something like this, he could understand it immediately.

"If you manage to get out alive, remember one sentence," Rong Qinglei said.

"’The younger sister killed the elder sister.’ My mother told me those words before she died. Remember them for me."

"And what about you?" Yue Mingxuan asked.

"Me?" Rong Qinglei gave a faint smile. "I only think that having someone search for the truth on my behalf is better than trying to find it alone."

Even at a moment like this, he still did not mention the true condition of his body.

The situation was urgent and he simply held Yue Mingxuan’s hand carefully whilemaking sure Yue Mingxuan’s fingers did not touch his arm.

But Yue Mingxuan suddenly reached back and placed his fingers on Rong Qinglei’s wrist to check his pulse.

In that flash of a moment, Rong Qinglei seemed to realize what he had done.

He quickly pushed Yue Mingxuan away.

Yue Mingxuan watched helplessly as Rong Qinglei’s body was pierced through by a long sword.

They had finally escaped from that place, yet Yue Mingxuan was now forced to face the one person he least wanted to encounter.

That person was Rong Zishen.

Rong Qinglei’s body slowly collapsed to the ground.

Yue Mingxuan could hardly believe what he was seeing with his own eyes.

"Looks like your life is quite tough. That formation actually didn’t manage to kill you," Rong Zishen said coldly as his hawk-like eyes fixed on Yue Mingxuan.

Yue Mingxuan, however, felt as though he was about to go mad.

"How could you be so foolish..." Tears gathered in Yue Mingxuan’s eyes.

But those words were spoken to Rong Qinglei who could no longer hear them. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Rong Zishen’s sharp gaze seemed capable of seeing through everything as it remained locked onto Yue Mingxuan.

Yue Mingxuan wiped away the tears at the corner of his eyes and said coldly, "Since you’ve gone this far, then a life must be repaid with a life."

His tone was extremely serious, yet Rong Zishen did not take him seriously at all.

He did not believe Yue Mingxuan had the ability to do anything truly dangerous to him.

After all, Yue Mingxuan was nothing more than a hostage prince from another land.

Although Rong Zishen had been keeping an eye on Yue Mingxuan, he had no idea how formidable Yue Mingxuan’s martial arts actually were.

All he knew was that Rong Qinglei was dead and Yue Mingxuan’s chances of escaping alive had become even slimmer.

"You must answer for what you’ve done," Yue Mingxuan said, his expression shadowed with gloom.

To him, Rong Qinglei had been an extremely important friend.

Even though Yue Mingxuan would never have ended up with him, he truly liked Rong Qinglei.

In Yue Mingxuan’s eyes, Rong Qinglei was one of the rare members of the Beirong imperial family who knew how to respect others.

Whether in character or ability, Rong Qinglei had been exceptional in every way.

Yet such a person had actually been killed by his own brother.

Yue Mingxuan could not even describe what he was feeling inside.

"You killed him, so you must pay with your life," Yue Mingxuan said in a cold voice that carried boundless fury.

And the truth was exactly that.

It had taken him so long to find a genuine friend here, only for Rong Zishen to kill him.

"Not only will I kill him," Rong Zishen said a she staring straight at Yue Mingxuan with those piercing hawk eyes, as if trying to read every thought in his mind, "I will kill you as well."

But Yue Mingxuan did not show the slightest fear.
