Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Sarcasm _1

「East City Gate.」

Li Qi was pacing back and forth like an ant on a hot pan.

THUD! THUD!

The sound of footsteps approached.

Li Qi’s spirits lifted. He hastily turned to look, and a shadowy figure emerged from the darkness.

"You’re finally back, Zhao Liu! How many Gold Coins did you get?" he asked excitedly.

But the figure did not respond; an eerie silence hung in the air.

"Zhao Liu? What’s going on? Why are you being so mysterious?"

Li Qi frowned.

As the figure drew closer, Li Qi finally realized something was wrong.

That figure was not Zhao Liu!

Moreover, the shadow was carrying someone on his shoulder.

SWISH!

Suddenly, the shadow’s speed exploded, and his palm emanated a white glow.

That’s True Qi!

Realizing the grave danger, Li Qi turned to flee.

But the shadow was faster. He caught up in a few steps and killed Li Qi with a single palm strike!

This person was none other than the steward of the Ling Mansion.

"Courting death!"

Steward Ling snorted coldly, slung the two bodies over his shoulder, and headed towards the Elixir Palace.

However, he failed to notice another shadowy figure slip out from behind a building near the city gate, silently tailing him.

Upon reaching the Elixir Palace gateway, Steward Ling scanned his surroundings. He then dug a pit nearby, buried Li Qi and Zhao Liu, covered his tracks, and swiftly headed back towards the East City Gate.

Soon after, a murmur echoed through the darkness. "Looks like he’s trying to frame me."

Indeed. It was Qin Feiyang.

When Li Qi and Zhao Liu had been asking him questions earlier, he had been wary. He had pretended to leave, then hidden in the shadows to spy on them.

As expected, the two were indeed up to no good.

However, Qin Feiyang hadn’t anticipated that the Ling Family would kill them.

They’ll stop at nothing to put me in a deadly situation. Since it’s impolite not to reciprocate, I’ll be sure to return the ’favor’.

Qin Feiyang sneered, quickly dug up the earth, and pulled Li Qi’s and Zhao Liu’s bodies out.

Then, after refilling the pit and covering his tracks, he carried the two corpses and stealthily infiltrated the Ling Mansion’s backyard.

The journey was tense, but he managed it without incident.

He then found a rockery and buried the two bodies behind it.

Now, it’s time to enjoy the show.

A cold glint flashed in his eyes as he silently slipped out of the Ling Mansion, unnoticed.

Arriving once more before the Elixir Palace’s main gate, Qin Feiyang paused, gazing up at the night sky.

Steward Ling just headed to the East City Gate... Could he be planning to assassinate Ling Yunfei? he pondered. No, I should go check... Forget it. With Brother Wolf around, nothing should go wrong. Besides, if he can’t even handle a crisis of this magnitude, how will he stand on his own in the future?

Qin Feiyang muttered, "Consider this a test for you. Don’t disappoint me. After all, I’m betting my fate on you this time." He then turned and entered the Elixir Palace.

「Meanwhile.」

The confrontation on Black Bear Mountain had begun.

Brother Wolf had immediately sensed someone following them.

Why would people come to Black Bear Mountain in the dead of night? he wondered. And this aura... it isn’t weak. No matter who it is, Ling Yunfei must be warned.

HOWL!

Immediately, it let out a wolf howl. Its cry was exceptionally piercing in the nocturnal forest.

"A wolf?" Ling Yunfei and Steward Ling were both startled and bewildered. Could it be Qin Feiyang?

Steward Ling muttered, "If we can capture Qin Feiyang, it’ll be a great achievement!" A glint shone in his old eyes as he immediately dashed towards the source of the howl.

Ling Yunfei hesitated but ultimately decided to go and see.

「A few moments later.」

He arrived at the bank of a river. It was the same river where Qin Feiyang had once trapped Jiang Chuan and the others. Thus, Ling Yunfei knew about the Black-scaled Crocodiles lurking in the river and didn’t dare to cross rashly.

Meanwhile, Brother Wolf lay hidden in a thicket on the opposite bank.

"Haha..."

"Qin Feiyang, I’ve finally found you!"

Suddenly, a hoarse laugh echoed from the forest behind him.

That’s the steward’s voice! Ling Yunfei instantly recognized it. What’s he doing on Black Bear Mountain? Damn it, he must be here to kill me!

Having been in the Ling Family for over a decade, Ling Yunfei naturally recognized Steward Ling’s voice.

He didn’t turn back!

He retreated a few steps, then abruptly dashed forward, launched himself off the riverbank with a powerful kick, and soared across like an agile monkey, landing on the other side in an instant.

ROAR!

SPLASH!

Several Black-scaled Crocodiles leaped from the water, but they were a step too late.

So it was him!

Above the river, with no trees to obstruct the view, the moonlight clearly illuminated Ling Yunfei for Steward Ling to see.

He quickly reached the riverbank. "Yunfei, what are you doing here?" he called out with a smile.

"And why are you here?" Ling Yunfei turned to face him, retorting with his own question. Although he didn’t yet know the steward’s true intentions, an unsettling feeling gripped him.

"I’m here to find medicinal herbs," Steward Ling chuckled.

"You’re truly diligent, searching for medicinal herbs in the dead of night," Ling Yunfei sneered.

"I have no choice; these are the Family Head’s orders. By the way, I heard a wolf’s howl and followed it here. Did you see anything?" Steward Ling asked.

"I saw nothing. I won’t disturb your herb gathering any longer. Goodbye." With that, Ling Yunfei turned and swiftly disappeared into the jungle.

When did this little brat become so vigilant? A murderous glint flashed in Steward Ling’s old eyes as he leaped abruptly.

SPLASH!

At the same time, more than a dozen Black-scaled Crocodiles leaped from the water, but they couldn’t reach him; he had jumped too high.

But Brother Wolf, hidden in the thicket, smirked.

WHOOSH!

It shot out from the thicket like an arrow.

Just as Steward Ling was about to land on the riverbank, Brother Wolf rammed into him. With a startled cry, Steward Ling splashed into the river.

The pack of Black-scaled Crocodiles, maws agape, instantly swarmed him! His predicament was identical to Jiang Chuan’s.

Heh, little one, even if you’re a Martial Ancestor, in this dark forest, your Brother Wolf has a hundred ways to make you cry for your parents. Brother Wolf grinned contemptuously, turned, and darted into the jungle.

Steward Ling was bewildered. Who bumped into me? He’d vaguely seen something like a wolf just now, hadn’t he?

He furiously slaughtered the Black-scaled Crocodiles, then leaped out of the water and onto the bank, but there wasn’t even a shadow of anyone to be found. Brother Wolf had long since vanished.

Although he had killed the Black-scaled Crocodiles, their fangs had exacted a heavy toll. Chunks of flesh had been torn from several places on his body. He was drenched in blood!

Excruciating, tearing pain assaulted every nerve in his body, pushing his sanity to its limits.

"AAAARGH!" he roared. "Damn beasts! I won’t spare you!" Like a maddened bull, he charged after Brother Wolf and Ling Yunfei.

He really is here to kill me, Ling Yunfei thought, his heart sinking as he heard the distant roar.

But then, a sneer crept onto his face. Black Bear Mountain is vast. As long as I shake him off, I’ll be fine!

But why did he say ’you beasts’ in plural? Could there really be someone else nearby?

Full of doubt, he turned and sped off in another direction. Brother Wolf, relying on its keen sense of smell, consistently trailed him.

Shaking off Steward Ling, however, would be no easy feat. After all, the steward was a Martial Ancestor, far faster than they were.

A desperate chase thus began.

「Meanwhile.」

At the very center of the Elixir Palace stood a pitch-black hall, tens of meters tall and sprawling over hundreds of square meters. It was both imposing and magnificent.

This was the Elixir Fire Palace.

This was where the Disciples of the Elixir Palace performed their Alchemy. It was also one of the most important locations in the Elixir Palace.

Upon returning to the Elixir Palace, Qin Feiyang had come directly here.

The pitch-black doors were tightly shut. On either side of the entrance sat two middle-aged men. They were both Elder Stewards of the Elixir Palace, specifically responsible for guarding the Elixir Fire Palace.

The Elixir Fire Palace was a monolithic structure, with only this single entrance and exit.

Qin Feiyang stopped at the entrance and cupped his hands. "Disciple Jiang Haotian greets the two Elder Stewards."

Ling Yan had brought him here before, so he knew a little about their identities and strength.

Similarly, the two Elder Stewards recognized Qin Feiyang.

The man on the left smiled. "Let me see your Identity Token."

Qin Feiyang retrieved the Identity Token from his Qiankun Bag and presented it with both hands.

The front of the Token bore two bold, powerful characters: Elixir Palace!

The back was engraved with Qin Feiyang’s name and the number ’110’.

The Elder Steward glanced at it, returned the Token to Qin Feiyang, then pushed open the stone door. He smiled and said, "Go in, turn right, and go all the way to the end. That’s your cultivation room."

"Thank you, Elder." Qin Feiyang bowed his thanks and strode into the Elixir Fire Palace.

The air inside the hall could be described in one word: cool.

Even though it was a place for Alchemy, it wasn’t hot at all; the stone used to build the hall had insulating properties.

The Elder Steward added, "Jiang Haotian, when you come out, place your Token in the recess beside the stone door, and it will open automatically."

With that, he closed the stone door.

Qin Feiyang turned and saw a recess in the wall beside the stone door, about an inch deep, perfectly matching the Token’s shape and size.

Qin Feiyang muttered, "The lower the Alchemy Room number, the purer its pill fire. Looks like I’ll have to work hard to get Alchemy Room Number One." He entered the right corridor and walked towards the end.

Stone doors lined the walls on both sides at regular intervals. Each stone door bore a number.

But in the vast corridor, there wasn’t a soul in sight.

RUMBLE!

As Qin Feiyang passed Alchemy Room Number Four, its stone door suddenly rumbled open. A rich medicinal aroma wafted out.

Qin Feiyang stopped and looked over curiously. He saw a familiar face: an old acquaintance clutching a jade vial, stepping out from within.

It was Cheng Yi!

"Jiang Haotian?" Cheng Yi paused in surprise, then smiled. "What a coincidence! Are you here for Alchemy?"

Qin Feiyang nodded. Isn’t that obvious? he thought. Why else would I come to the Elixir Fire Palace if not for Alchemy? Sightseeing?

"So, which Alchemy Room are you in?" Cheng Yi asked. "Oh, look at my muddled head. Alchemy has made me befuddled. You’re engaged to Elder Feng’s granddaughter. Barring any surprises, you’ll be family sooner or later. Elder Feng will definitely take special care of you and assign you an Alchemy Room with a low number."

Cheng Yi shook his head and sighed, his face a mask of envy, though his tone was dripping with sarcasm. "It’s great to have connections! Those of us without backing can only work our way up, step by painstaking step."
