Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The Sordid Methods of a Love-Addled Brain

"I’d advise you not to do anything stupid," Cecilia Nathan said, rubbing her temples.

It wasn’t that she cared what Serena Hughes did, nor did she want to get involved with her.

But if anything happened to Selina Nathan, it would be her own reputation on the line.

Serena Hughes, however, didn’t take her words to heart.

Her grandmother had just told her that if she wanted to get ahead, she had to make sure something happened to Selina Nathan.

’Nothing ventured, nothing gained.’

’With the Sinclair family backing me, what do I have to be afraid of!’

"It’s okay, Cecilia Nathan. You just spoke up for me, I heard it all. No matter what, at least between me and Selina Nathan, you’re on my side." Serena Hughes grabbed Cecilia’s hand, looking touched. "Anyway, whatever I do will have nothing to do with you."

Hearing Serena Hughes’s words, Cecilia was instantly reminded of a line from some TV drama: ’Whatever I do has nothing to do with you, Consort X. Your good fortune is yet to come.’

Cecilia’s lips twitched.

’Hopefully, it’s not a string of bad luck that’s yet to come.’

After Serena Hughes left, Cecilia turned to look for Hugo Grant.

The most urgent thing was to find her phone and text her father, asking him to find a way to recall this lovesick fool.

She’d rather everyone call her "ugly" than be dragged down by an idiot and labeled lovesick.

At that exact moment, Sharon Quincy received a message from her bodyguard: *Miss, Serena Hughes and Cecilia Nathan are teaming up to go after you.*

Sharon Quincy let out a dry laugh.

"These lovesick fools only know how to use such dirty tricks."

The bodyguards Uncle Linden Nathan had given her were as reliable as he’d said. They had set up a network of eyes and ears the moment they entered the banquet.

Just as she’d expected, someone was trying to "frame" her.

She didn’t care about Serena Hughes, but Cecilia Nathan was a different story.

She had been observing Damian Hawthorne earlier and noticed that despite his nonchalant, devil-may-care attitude, his gaze kept landing on Cecilia Nathan.

Cecilia Nathan had been chasing Damian Hawthorne for a long time. She was practically his lapdog.

Everyone in the country knew it.

As one of Damian Hawthorne’s admirers, she was, of course, well aware.

Thinking of Cecilia’s familiar face, Sharon narrowed her eyes. "By the way, what is Cecilia Nathan up to now?"

"She’s looking for the young master of the Grant family. It seems she wants to get her phone back."

’Get her phone?’

Sharon Quincy recalled the cryptic things Cecilia had said.

"Can you get her phone for me?"

’If I can just get my hands on Cecilia’s phone and check it, a lot of things will become clear.’

’After all, a phone holds all of a person’s secrets these days.’

The bodyguard considered for a moment, then nodded. "I can get it."

They weren’t ordinary bodyguards; they had been carefully cultivated and selected by the Nathan family.

Beyond just protection, they were highly capable in many other areas.

Cecilia’s phone was in the car. All they had to do was pry the door open before she got to it.

"Then bring me her phone."

Sharon Quincy crossed her arms and sat sprawled on the sofa, a malicious smile playing on her lips. "I’d like to see what she’s really all about." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

At this moment, Sharon Quincy was brimming with confidence. No matter who Cecilia Nathan turned out to be, she couldn’t possibly be more formidable than her.

Cecilia had interrupted her time and again just now, thoroughly getting on her bad side.

No one noticed that she was now a completely different person from the shy, nervous girl she had been at the start of the evening.

Cecilia finally found Hugo Grant tucked away in a corner.

Just as she was about to approach, she saw Damian Hawthorne sitting beside him.

Cecilia glanced over. The people around them were their mutual friends.

Damian’s friends all knew who she was, too.

Seeing her approach, one of them whistled playfully. "Well, well, Cecilia’s here!"

"Are you here for Damian?"

Nearly every time Cecilia showed up, it was to look for Damian Hawthorne.

They were long used to it.

Hearing this, the hand Damian Hawthorne had around his glass paused. He tilted his head slightly, shooting Cecilia a sidelong glance. "What are you doing here?"

"I’m looking for Hugo Grant," Cecilia said, walking straight up to him. "My phone is in your car."

Hugo Grant immediately stood up. "I’ll go get it."

The atmosphere instantly turned awkward.

Everyone exchanged glances, unsure of what to say.

It was true that Cecilia used to pursue Damian, but they’d recently heard that Hugo Grant was also pursuing her.

This love triangle left them, a close-knit group of friends, unsure of how to react.

"Damian, why don’t you just give up on Cecilia? I think she and Hugo look good together," one of them advised.

"Yeah, Damian, didn’t you always hate her clinging to you? You should be happy now that you’ve finally shaken off that stage-five clinger."

Suddenly, the sound of a glass shattering on the floor cut through the noise.

Cecilia and Hugo were already dozens of feet away. Hearing the sound, she glanced back, but the lighting was too dim to see anything clearly.

"Still worried about Damian?"

Hugo Grant’s low voice broke the silence, his expression complicated.

"When Selina Nathan asked Damian for his contact information earlier, you were staring at them."

Cecilia’s breath caught. For a moment, she didn’t know how to explain.

The girl’s name was Selina Nathan. Of course she was concerned.

But being concerned about Damian...

Cecilia lowered her gaze, remaining silent.

"Damian didn’t give her his real contact information," Hugo said, the corners of his lips turning up slightly. "He was just putting on a show for you."

"I’ve been friends with Damian for years. The one thing he hates most is arranged marriages. He would never give in just because of someone’s family background. Damian... he’s always been very strong-willed."

Cecilia nodded.

It wasn’t just Damian who hated arranged marriages; she did, too.

Fortunately, her father, Linden Nathan, never forced her into such things.

She knew Frances Bennett’s personality. Ever since Damian went blind, it was said that Frances had single-handedly propped up the Hawthorne family, developing severe anxiety and bipolar disorder in the process. That’s why she’d become so obsessed with a potential bride’s family background.

After Damian went blind, many powerful, wealthy older women had approached Frances Bennett, offering to marry him.

Although Frances had rejected them under pressure, the whole ordeal of nearly being "kept" by these women had left an indelible shadow on Damian.

The two of them walked to the car. But after Hugo unlocked it, Cecilia couldn’t find her phone anywhere.

Her purse was there, but the phone inside had vanished into thin air.

"What’s wrong?" Seeing her rummaging through her purse, Hugo immediately sensed trouble.

They quickly checked the dashcam footage. Aside from a few minutes of black screen from just a moment ago, it showed nothing.

"Whoever did this came prepared."

Not only that, but they were skilled. They even knew to cut the dashcam’s power supply.

Hugo’s phone was right there, but they hadn’t taken it. They had specifically targeted hers.

"I’ll call the police." Hugo pulled out his phone, but Cecilia shook her head.

"It’s the birthday banquet for Damian Hawthorne’s grandfather. It wouldn’t be right to call the police now."

Having the police show up at a birthday banquet is considered a bad omen for the elderly.

Whatever the reason, she didn’t want to be the one to ruin things for everyone else.

"I know where my phone went."
