Chapter 50: Chapter 50: Serena Hughes Breaks Her Promise

Not long after Serena Hughes left, Chloe Sutton received a call from her father. "Chloe, the company... I think we’ll have to file for bankruptcy."

Hearing her father’s words, Chloe Sutton quickly tried to comfort him. "Dad, just wait a little longer. I’ve asked someone for help."

"It’s too late. I know someone is deliberately targeting our company this time. They won’t stop until they’ve driven us into the ground." There was a note of despair in Mr. Sutton’s voice.

With that, Mr. Sutton hung up.

A bad feeling welled up in Chloe Sutton’s heart.

"Chloe, what’s wrong?" Seeing her friend’s pale face, Cecilia Nathan’s mood sank as well.

She and Chloe had been university roommates. Although they had different majors, they had always been very close.

"My dad said our company has no choice but to file for bankruptcy... Cecilia, what do I do? I’m so scared he’ll do something rash." After speaking, Chloe Sutton hugged Cecilia Nathan and burst into tears.

Chloe Sutton had always been strong; she rarely cried like this.

The moment Cecilia heard this, she knew Serena Hughes hadn’t solved the Sutton family’s problem. Or rather, she hadn’t even tried.

At this thought, Cecilia Nathan patted Chloe Sutton’s shoulder and comforted her, "It’s okay. I’ll figure something out."

With that, she walked quickly into her bedroom and promptly dialed her father’s assistant.

"Hello, Mr. Lynch? I need your help with something..."

After she finished speaking, Cecilia Nathan let out a soft sigh.

’Originally, I felt like holding onto that score was more trouble than it was worth. I thought it was better to just give it to Serena Hughes to keep them from going after my friends. I never expected that even after giving her the score, Chloe’s problem still wouldn’t be solved.’

Soon, Mr. Lynch called back with what he had found.

"Miss, the Sinclair family did not intervene in the Sutton family’s crisis."

’They didn’t intervene...’

’In other words, Serena Hughes took the item but did nothing.’

Cecilia Nathan took a deep breath, trying to suppress the rage burning in her chest.

"Look into it further. Find out what’s really behind this targeted attack on the Sutton family."

Most companies have some accounts payable, but it was rare for a whole crowd of creditors to suddenly show up demanding payment like this.

Perhaps it was just as Chloe’s father had said: the Suttons were being deliberately targeted.

After finishing her call with Mr. Lynch, Cecilia Nathan found Serena Hughes’s number and dialed it.

’At first, I had decided I didn’t care about the score anymore. It wasn’t because I was afraid of Serena’s status, but because I didn’t want to get tangled up with someone like her.’

’I’m not afraid of the Sinclair family, but that doesn’t mean my friends aren’t.’

’I thought giving her the score would solve everything perfectly, but I never imagined Serena Hughes had no intention of helping at all.’

When Serena Hughes saw Cecilia’s call, she initially planned to ignore it. But then she thought about Chloe Sutton’s situation, and a smirk played on her lips as she smugly swiped to answer.

"Hello, Cecilia. Is something wrong?"

"Serena Hughes, you took my score, but you didn’t hold up your end of the bargain. Is this what you call a promise?" Cecilia’s voice was ice-cold.

Serena Hughes chuckled softly. "What do you mean, I didn’t hold up my end? I already told my grandmother. As for why it didn’t work out, there’s nothing I can do about it!"

"Then give me my property back."

"Cecilia, that’s not how it works. I only said I would help, not that I would solve all of her family’s problems. We’re talking about tens of millions! Where would I get that kind of money? Besides, your little score... isn’t worth that much."

Before Cecilia could respond, Serena Hughes hung up.

Listening to the dial tone, Cecilia’s chest ached with anger.

’Normally, I wouldn’t deign to argue with someone like Serena Hughes. But if this is how she wants to play it, she can’t blame me for what comes next.’

...

After hanging up, Serena Hughes calmly nibbled on her afternoon tea snacks, feeling perfectly justified.

The reason she was so brazen was that she knew Cecilia and Chloe couldn’t do anything to her.

One was an orphan, and the other’s family was on the brink of bankruptcy. So what if they knew she had tricked them? Cecilia Nathan and Chloe Sutton were powerless against her.

Serena thought about Cecilia’s demand to return the musical score. To prevent any further complications, she decided to go directly to Damian Hawthorne.

As long as Damian Hawthorne was convinced the score was hers, nothing Cecilia could do would be able to shake her position.

With this in mind, Serena Hughes resolved to find Damian Hawthorne.

She had planned to go to him right away last time but had been dissuaded by her grandmother.

But today, she was determined to tell Damian Hawthorne everything.

Thinking of this, Serena Hughes sent a message to Damian Hawthorne: "Mr. Hawthorne, I’ve remembered the score for ’Eye of Love’."

At that moment, Damian Hawthorne was at a bar, drinking with Hugo Grant.

Hugo Grant had just returned from a business trip and had immediately called Damian to meet up.

"Do you know who picked Cecilia Nathan up from the hospital last time?" Damian Hawthorne asked, holding his glass and glancing at his friend with a nonchalant air.

’Before, he and Hugo would have talked about anything and everything. But ever since the incident with Cecilia, he no longer confided in him so freely.’

’But a rift between them was one thing; they were still friends who had known each other for years, and the bond was still there.’

A small smile touched Hugo Grant’s lips, and his usually stern features softened slightly. "Damian, have you noticed you’re paying a little too much attention to Cecilia?"

Damian Hawthorne’s hand, holding his glass, paused. He looked at Hugo with amusement. "So what if I am? We slept together, after all. Isn’t it normal for me to show a little concern?"

Hugo Grant’s expression turned cold.

"What, does it bother you?" Damian leaned in closer, his tone mocking. "If it’s true love, you shouldn’t mind, right?"

"I don’t mind," Hugo Grant said, leaning back and giving him a cool glance. "I’m even willing to claim the child in her belly as my own. Why would I mind something like this?"

Remembering that it was Hugo who had accompanied Cecilia to the hospital last time, Damian’s smile vanished.

His fingers tightened fiercely around the glass, making it tremble. For a second, it seemed he would shatter it.

"Damian, I heard you’re planning on a marriage alliance with the young lady of the Nathan family," Hugo Grant mentioned, as if in passing. "My mom heard it from your mom. It seems like she’s taking it quite seriously."

Damian Hawthorne lifted his gaze, a cool, arrogant smile on his face. "If she wants a marriage alliance, she can have one by herself. I’m not interested."

"Is that so?" Hugo smiled meaningfully. "I, for one, have a rather good impression of the Nathan family’s young lady. After all, her surname is Nathan, just like Cecilia. Someone with the same name can’t be all that different."

"Then you’d better get to it." Damian Hawthorne stood up, a cold smirk on his lips. "Hugo, if you’re so interested, why don’t you investigate who picked Cecilia up from the hospital? I have a feeling her background isn’t as simple as it seems."

"You’re only just realizing that?"

"What do you mean?" Damian’s brows furrowed. "What do you know?"

"I was thinking the same thing as you. Her background is probably not simple. It’s possible she has someone powerful backing her."

The moment Hugo finished speaking, the atmosphere grew heavy. The silence was so profound you could hear a pin drop.

After what felt like a long time, Damian Hawthorne let out a short, sharp scoff—a sound laced with both ridicule and mockery.

"Damian..." Hugo mused, "if her background really isn’t ordinary, and considering that she shares the surname Nathan with the Nathan family... do you think she could be their mysterious, long-lost young lady?"
