Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Playing a Song

Luna...

Cecilia Nathan froze for a moment. When she looked up, her gaze met Damian Hawthorne’s meaningful eyes.

His scrutinizing gaze seemed to want to see into the depths of Cecilia’s soul.

Cecilia’s heart lurched violently.

Damian Hawthorne’s lips curled into a playful smile. Backlit, his tall, slender figure stood out.

"Luna... Is she someone to you?" Cecilia asked.

Damian Hawthorne’s features were exquisite. His long lashes concealed the emotion in his eyes. "Someone very important from my past."

He clearly didn’t want to say more.

Coincidentally, Cecilia didn’t want to ask, either.

Damian Hawthorne walked over to a cabinet, opened the door, and took something out from inside.

When she saw the exquisite violin case, Cecilia’s eyes lit up.

She always got excited whenever she saw a fine instrument.

It was a feeling that was in her blood.

Damian Hawthorne placed the case on the desk, opened it, and a beautiful, reddish-brown violin was revealed.

"Justin Bell just won this at auction. It’s older than Serena Hughes’s and has a richer tone."

Serena Hughes’s violin was worth millions, so this one, from an auction, could only be more expensive.

Cecilia averted her gaze and said coolly, "You certainly dote on her."

’One violin wasn’t enough, so he had to buy a second. Is this the legendary ’not enough skill, so make up for it with better tools’?’

"This is for you." Damian Hawthorne pushed the violin toward her. "Try it out."

His voice was low and husky, with a gentle, coaxing tone.

Cecilia shot him a suspicious look, the corner of her mouth twitching. "Thank you, but I can’t accept a reward I haven’t earned. I don’t dare take it."

"Doesn’t satisfying certain needs of mine for the past few years count as earning it?" Damian Hawthorne’s lips curled, a hint of roguish charm in his voice. "Everyone says you’re an excellent violinist. I’d like to hear for myself."

Damian Hawthorne sat down, leaned back in his chair, and tapped his fingers on the armrest.

His long fingers had distinct knuckles, and the rhythm of his tapping seemed to sync with the beat of her heart.

"Play? Now?" Cecilia was starting to doubt the real reason Damian Hawthorne had his assistant summon her.

One moment he was saying he couldn’t see, the next he was giving her a violin, and now he was asking her to play.

Remembering Damian Hawthorne’s comment about her resembling Luna, Cecilia’s eyelid twitched violently.

The truth was, she really didn’t want to play the violin in front of Damian Hawthorne.

"Music healed my eyes and my psychological wounds before, Cecilia. If you play something, maybe my eyes will get better," Damian Hawthorne said, crossing his arms with a mischievous smile.

"What do you want to hear?" Cecilia looked up, her tone cold. She casually picked up the violin and settled it into position. "I’ll only play one piece."

"Play the piece that Serena Hughes wanted from you."

Cecilia’s hand, holding the violin, faltered.

’The piece Serena Hughes wanted...’

"Damian Hawthorne, you have security cameras in here, don’t you?" Cecilia asked with a knowing smile.

’Damian Hawthorne’s goal was too obvious.’

"Are you trying to record the piece and give it to Serena Hughes?"

Cecilia couldn’t believe that Damian Hawthorne still hadn’t given up.

He was going blind, yet he still hadn’t forgotten about the piece he wanted from her.

"Is that the kind of person you think I am?" Damian Hawthorne’s smile vanished.

Cecilia lowered her eyes, her palm trembling slightly.

She knew she had to play this piece today. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Cecilia was just about to play when a knock at the door shattered the train of thought for them both.

"President Hawthorne..." The assistant opened the door, looking sheepish. "Your mother is here. She’s with Miss Serena..."

Remembering the sight of Damian Hawthorne’s mother chatting and laughing with Serena Hughes, Justin Bell hesitated, leaving his sentence unfinished.

He remembered that Damian Hawthorne’s mother, Ms. Bennett, didn’t like Serena Hughes.

But now, something unexpected seemed to have happened...
