Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 40: Who is Hugo?
Cecilia Nathan’s brow furrowed at his words.
’A second? A third? Who said she was going to have that many with him?’
Hugo Grant’s lips curved up slightly, a questioning look in his dark eyes. "So you’ve finally decided to marry Cecilia Nathan? What about your old flame?"
"Weren’t you very concerned about Serena Hughes?"
At the mention of Serena Hughes, Damian Hawthorne scoffed. "You’ve got a point."
’Even if Serena isn’t Luna, Luna will come back to me sooner or later.’
"Hugo Grant, you’re a real killjoy." Damian Hawthorne walked to Cecilia Nathan’s side, his gaze deep. "But Cecilia told me she doesn’t like you."
Cecilia Nathan looked a little embarrassed at being called out so directly by Damian Hawthorne.
She looked at Hugo Grant, seeming to want to say something but holding back.
Hugo Grant wasn’t annoyed. He listened to Damian Hawthorne’s taunt and replied calmly, "Damian, you should know that I don’t care about that."
He didn’t care whether Cecilia Nathan liked him or not.
He only did what he believed was right.
"It’s like talking to a brick wall." Damian Hawthorne’s expression turned icy.
He was in a terrible mood, and he didn’t know if it was because of Hugo Grant’s persistence or because the person Hugo liked was Cecilia Nathan.
’Truthfully, if Hugo Grant and Cecilia Nathan got together, given Hugo’s personality, Cecilia wouldn’t be mistreated.’
But for some reason, he was vehemently against that outcome.
If Hugo Grant and Cecilia Nathan were together, they would inevitably flaunt their relationship in front of him. The very thought of it was inexplicably irritating to Damian Hawthorne.
"Cecilia." Damian Hawthorne leaned down, pinched Cecilia Nathan’s chin, and his lips curled slightly. "Stay away from Hugo Grant from now on. If certain rumors get out, it won’t be good for you."
The gossip reporters these days have eyes everywhere. When Cecilia Nathan had agreed to go out with Hugo Grant, a paparazzo had already snapped photos.
If he hadn’t bought the exclusive story and paid to suppress it, the news of Cecilia Nathan and Hugo Grant’s "sweet date" would have spread throughout all of Veridia.
"I don’t mind." Cecilia Nathan turned her face away, retreating slightly. "Damian Hawthorne, an innocent person has nothing to fear. I don’t care about that stuff."
If she had cared about public opinion from the start, she wouldn’t have stayed by Damian Hawthorne’s side for so long.
Everyone had witnessed her pursuit of Damian Hawthorne. She had been through all sorts of nasty news and verbal abuse.
Looking into her calm eyes, Damian Hawthorne narrowed his.
’Those words sound familiar.’
Back when Cecilia Nathan was chasing him, she had also said she didn’t care.
Cecilia Nathan was a woman of her word. If she had truly cared, she wouldn’t have forced him to be with her back then.
Damian Hawthorne recalled how, at the very beginning, Cecilia Nathan had gone to the tallest building in Korsyth and threatened to jump just to stay by his side.
To stabilize the Hawthorne Family’s stock, and also as a form of "revenge" against Cecilia Nathan, he had agreed.
As time went on, he started to see a familiar shadow in her.
Damian Hawthorne had to admit that Cecilia Nathan’s gentleness and consideration were very similar to Luna’s.
But in the end, she wasn’t Luna.
"Hugo Grant, you should head out first." Damian Hawthorne smiled at his friend. "I need to talk to Cecilia, and I don’t want any outsiders present."
Hugo Grant glanced at Cecilia Nathan. Seeing no reaction from her, he turned and walked out the door.
Cecilia Nathan glanced at Damian Hawthorne’s injured arm, and her eyes stung a little.
No matter what, Damian Hawthorne had, after all, saved her.
"Go on, what is it?"
Cecilia Nathan’s tone softened.
Damian Hawthorne’s lips curled slightly as he sat nonchalantly on the edge of Cecilia Nathan’s bed. "You said you liked my eyes. What if... what if I went blind again?"
Cecilia Nathan fell silent, unsure of how to respond for a moment.
"You won’t go blind. Your eyes will always be able to see the light."
Damian Hawthorne scoffed. "Who is Hugo?"
Cecilia Nathan’s long, lowered lashes trembled slightly. "Hugo? You mean Hugo Grant? Why are you suddenly asking about him?"
"You kept calling out for Hugo when you were delirious," Damian Hawthorne said in a low voice.
Cecilia Nathan gave an awkward laugh. "Then I really must have been delirious. I don’t know why I would call out that name."
Hearing this, Damian Hawthorne’s eyelids lifted slightly. "How long have you and Hugo Grant been together?"
Cecilia Nathan’s lips parted. She wanted to say that she had nothing to do with Hugo Grant, but it felt as if her throat had been squeezed shut, and she inexplicably couldn’t get the words out.
Damian Hawthorne leaned in with a wicked smile, pinched her chin, his lips drawing near her face.
They were so close. Cecilia Nathan’s eyes widened, and she didn’t dare to breathe. "Damian Hawthorne..."
"I didn’t expect Hugo Grant to start poaching on my territory even before I did."
Cecilia Nathan could feel his masculine scent lingering by her ear. The familiar voice and actions made her heart race once again.
"When you’re enjoying yourself in bed with me, are you thinking about your Hugo then, too?"
His roguish voice carried a hint of lingering affection and provocation.
A hot feeling rushed to Cecilia Nathan’s eyes. She shoved him away forcefully. "If you’re done talking, you can leave."
The push sent Damian Hawthorne stumbling backward. Because one of his arms was injured, he could only use his other hand to steady himself on the bed.
Damian Hawthorne didn’t get angry. He wore a half-smile that made it impossible to read his true emotions.
Cecilia Nathan knew he had misunderstood.
But right now, she had no desire to explain.
Damian Hawthorne strode toward the door.
Hugo Grant hadn’t gone far. He was leaning against the wall by the door. Seeing Damian Hawthorne emerge, he straightened up slightly.
Damian Hawthorne walked over to Hugo Grant and gave a sinister smile. "Hugo... congratulations."
After saying that, he strode away.
Hugo Grant: "..."
’Hugo again...’
Hugo Grant watched Damian Hawthorne’s retreating figure, lost in thought.
Just as Damian Hawthorne walked out, he ran right into a worried-looking Serena Hughes.
"Mr. Hawthorne, are you all right?" Serena Hughes hurried over to him. When she saw the bandages wrapped around his hand, she covered her mouth in alarm. "It looks so serious..."
Seeing Serena Hughes again, Damian Hawthorne’s mood calmed down considerably.
Thinking about what his assistant had found, Damian Hawthorne’s thin lips parted, his voice low. "Before me, was there someone you liked?"
Serena Hughes froze, not understanding why Damian Hawthorne would bring this up.
"No... You’re the only one who’s ever moved my heart." Serena Hughes’s voice grew quieter and quieter.
"I recall you liked a man when you met me. He seemed to be a senior from your school."
Damian Hawthorne’s single sentence made Serena Hughes’s expression turn awkward.
"I had a crush on him, but we never got together."
In truth, that senior had a crush on her, too.
But after Damian Hawthorne appeared, she was afraid he would get the wrong idea, so she cut off contact with her senior.
She never expected Damian Hawthorne to have found out even this.
Serena Hughes’s heart suddenly began to race.
She had a feeling that it wasn’t a coincidence Damian Hawthorne was bringing this up now.
Sure enough, Damian Hawthorne’s next words left Serena Hughes frozen in place:
"You two can get back in touch." Damian Hawthorne raised an eyebrow nonchalantly. "Rekindle your old flame."
"Rekindle... our old flame?" Serena Hughes’s eyes widened, tears welling up. "Mr. Hawthorne, what do you mean by that? Are you giving up on me?"
"Mr. Hawthorne, if there’s anything you’re not happy with, I can change! Please don’t abandon me."
Damian Hawthorne’s words made Serena Hughes break down completely.
