Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 187: Go and Investigate
"She’s only being so nice to you because she knows who you are. Why else would she be so good to you for no reason? Do you really think she likes you?"
"Even if she schemed to get close to me, it doesn’t matter. At least she hasn’t treated me badly," Cecilia Nathan said, calmly putting some distance between herself and Frances Bennett. "Mrs. Bennett, if there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading back."
"Cecilia... Hey, wait." Frances Bennett anxiously blocked Cecilia’s path and asked in a low voice, "Are you really marrying Miles Sinclair?"
"You don’t need to concern yourself with that, Mrs. Bennett."
Cecilia didn’t want to answer the question. Frances said anxiously, "Cecilia, hey, I know you don’t like me, but I’m Damian’s mother, after all. You used to love him so much. Is there really no chance of reconciliation?"
"Mrs. Bennett." Cecilia’s lips curled into a slight, helpless smile as she looked at her. "Sometimes I wonder, are you really Damian Hawthorne’s biological mother? Your personalities are nothing alike."
Frances Bennett frowned nervously. "Of course he is. I carried him for nine months and gave birth to him. How could he not be my son?"
"Cecilia, that Miles Sinclair is an orphan. You won’t be happy if you marry him."
"Thank you for your concern, Mrs. Bennett." Cecilia didn’t want to speak with her any longer and turned to leave.
Just as Frances Bennett was about to chase after her, a voice suddenly stopped her.
"Frances."
Frances Bennett stopped in her tracks.
An elderly man in a wrinkled, gray suit walked up to her.
Seeing the man, Frances Bennett’s heavily powdered face crumpled in distaste.
"Caleb Kramer, what are you doing here? Didn’t you go abroad?"
Frances Bennett subconsciously glanced around, terrified of being recognized with him.
"I ran out of money. Couldn’t make a living abroad, so I came back." Caleb Kramer looked her up and down, licked his lips, and chuckled. "More than twenty years have passed in a flash. Did you miss me?"
"Shut your mouth!" Frances Bennett’s face turned livid with rage. "You were just a butler for the Hawthorne family. You say something like that to me again, and believe me, I’ll have you thrown in jail."
"Jail?" Caleb Kramer gave an evil smile. "If you dare send me to jail, I’ll dare to tell the whole world your secret." 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
At his words, the color drained from Frances Bennett’s face.
"Fine. How much do you want this time?"
"That depends on whether you want the monthly plan or a full buyout." Caleb Kramer smiled confidently, the wrinkles on his face deepening.
Frances Bennett knew that Caleb Kramer was deliberately trying to stir up trouble.
"Your Hawthorne family wasn’t as rich back then as you are now. A hundred thousand from you was generous at the time. But now the Hawthornes are rolling in it, so me asking for a billion... that’s not too much, is it?"
"A billion?" Frances Bennett roared. "Are you insane? Where am I supposed to get that kind of money?"
"That’s not my problem. If I don’t see one billion within a week, you can just wait for the news that you’re not Damian Hawthorne’s biological mother to spread all over Veridia."
After saying his piece, Caleb Kramer left Frances Bennett standing there and walked away without a backward glance.
Frances Bennett, however, was left standing there in a daze, clearly terrified by the situation.
’A billion... where was she going to get a billion?’
A few moments later, Caleb Kramer had walked into a small alley.
Sunlight spilled onto the alley wall, leaving an area in deep shadow.
"I did what you said. Remember to wire the money to my account."
The man in the shadows wore a mask and sunglasses. He was tall with a distinguished air.
He was dressed in casual clothes, his features completely obscured.
He took out a card and tossed it to Caleb Kramer. "There’s fifty million on this card. The PIN is six zeros."
Caleb Kramer took the card gleefully, gave it a little kiss, and grinned. "You’ve got a grudge against the Hawthorne family, huh? I was supposed to keep my promise, but you’re just paying me too much. You can’t really blame me."
The man didn’t speak, only smiling. "If Frances Bennett doesn’t give you the money, I don’t mind if you turn the Hawthorne family upside down."
Caleb Kramer’s eyes darted slyly as he chuckled and agreed.
After Caleb Kramer left, the man remained standing in place. His fingers slowly clenched into a fist, veins bulging on his hand.
...
After leaving, Cecilia Nathan had no idea about the drama that had just unfolded with Frances Bennett.
She remembered the phone call Miles Sinclair had taken in the car.
’It seemed Damian Hawthorne had gone to the Sinclair family’s home.’
’What was he doing there?’
Damian Hawthorne had indeed gone to the Sinclair residence, but in the end, he didn’t get to see Quinn Sutton.
"Mr. Hawthorne, Quinn Sutton goes back to her own place every day. Should we go there and wait for her?" Having made a trip to the Sinclair residence for nothing, Justin Bell was getting a little impatient.
"No, just have someone keep a close eye on her." Damian Hawthorne narrowed his eyes and wearily rubbed his temples.
Lately, his vision had been a bit blurry.
’Maybe there’s something wrong with my eyes again.’
A thought made Damian Hawthorne chuckle softly.
May Rhodes once said that her greatest wish was for his eyesight to recover.
’If I go blind again, will Luna reappear before my eyes?’
It wasn’t just May Rhodes. Even Cecilia Nathan was very concerned about his eyes.
Sometimes Damian Hawthorne thought that they seemed to care more about his eyes than about him as a person.
Suddenly, an idea seemed to strike Damian Hawthorne.
’Cared about his eyes?’
’Come to think of it, he’d never known who his eye donor was.’
His corneas had been donated by a young person.
But because of confidentiality protocols, he had never been able to find out the donor’s identity.
As a thought occurred to him, Damian Hawthorne’s brow suddenly twitched.
All these years, he had never actively tried to investigate the donor.
"Justin Bell." Damian Hawthorne’s thin lips parted as he spoke slowly, "Is it still possible to find out who my eye donor was?"
"President Hawthorne, it’s been so long. It will probably be very difficult to find out now," Justin Bell sighed. "Besides, the hospital keeps that information confidential and won’t allow us to investigate."
"Look into it anyway."
Damian Hawthorne had a feeling that Cecilia Nathan’s reason for staying by his side was definitely related to his eyes.
「Korsyth First Hospital.」
Ophthalmology Director’s Office.
Cecilia Nathan sat in front of the director, flipping through the file in her hands.
"Mr. Hawthorne’s eyes have been recovering well, but the last car accident did have an impact. Don’t worry, though. Modern medicine is advanced, and our research in ophthalmology is always progressing. His eyes will definitely be fine." The speaker was the Director of Ophthalmology at Korsyth First Hospital, who was also the hospital president.
"Is there a risk of him going blind again?" Cecilia asked.
The ophthalmology director didn’t answer directly, instead pointing to a section of the file. "Generally speaking, as long as he doesn’t suffer any physical trauma, there shouldn’t be any further issues. And I think for someone like Mr. Hawthorne, as long as he isn’t reckless, physical trauma is unlikely."
Looking at the list of examinations related to Damian Hawthorne’s eyes, the tense expression on Cecilia’s face finally relaxed.
"Director Miller."
A nurse knocked on the door from outside. "Damian Hawthorne has an appointment with you, but he’s arrived early. He’s asking if he can come in now?"
Hearing that Damian Hawthorne had arrived, Cecilia Nathan froze.
’Why is Damian Hawthorne here?’
