Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Same As It Ever Was

Governor Harrington’s office feels like a tomb, all polished marble and dead silence. The only sound is Kate’s voice, rising and falling in desperate waves as she pleads Sandra’s case. I sit rigid in a chair that probably costs more than everything I owned in my past life, watching two of the most powerful women I’ve met lock horns over the fate of a woman who accidentally brought a gun to fuck me.

"With all due respect, Governor, this was clearly an oversight," Kate insists, her normally composed voice strained with urgency. "Sandra Stone has dedicated her entire life to the security of this facility."

Governor Harrington remains unmoved behind her massive obsidian desk, her silver ponytail catching the light as she studies Kate with those penetrating gray eyes. The exhaustion etched into her face somehow makes her more intimidating, like she’s too tired for anything but absolute truth.

"Director Flynn," she says, her raspy voice cutting through Kate’s plea, "the law is exceptionally clear on this matter. Bringing an unauthorized weapon into proximity with a male ward is grounds for immediate exile."

I shift in my seat, the fertility pill coursing through my system making it increasingly difficult to concentrate on the high-stakes conversation. My skin feels hypersensitive, every nerve ending crackling with arousal. Kate’s movements keep drawing my attention, the way she gestures emphatically, how she stands with perfect posture, the curve of her body beneath that uniform. I can’t stop picturing her bent over that balcony railing like we’d discussed yesterday.

I squeeze the armrests, trying to ground myself as sweat beads on my forehead. The timing couldn’t be worse, I’m supposed to be sitting quietly while Kate handles this, not fighting the urge to imagine her naked.

But Sandra doesn’t deserve exile for a stupid mistake. And I’m the one who was supposedly endangered.

"Governor Harrington," I interrupt. "If I may... I’d like to request clemency for Sandra Stone."

Both women turn to look at me, surprise evident on their faces. The Governor’s silver eyebrows rise fractionally.

"I wasn’t remotely offended or threatened by the weapon," I continue, shifting uncomfortably as another wave of heat rolls through me. "I actually found it interesting. "

Governor Harrington studies me for a long moment, her weathered face unreadable. Then she sighs deeply, the sound filling the cavernous office.

Governor Harrington’s piercing gaze shifts from me to Kate, her weathered face hardening into something unreadable.

"Did you put him up to this?" she asks Kate, her voice carrying a dangerous edge.

"No," Kate responds immediately, her back straightening even more. "This is entirely his own initiative."

The Governor narrows her eyes, redirecting her attention back to me. "Then why exactly is he even here with us? This is an administrative matter."

I clear my throat, fighting to keep my voice steady despite the waves of heat coursing through me. "I wanted to plead for clemency again, and honestly... I just wanted to be with Kate." The second confession slips out before I can stop it.

Kate’s eyes suddenly widen as they drop to my lap, where my robe is doing a poor job of concealing my current state.

"Shit," she mutters, hand flying to her forehead. "I completely forgot Tyler took the fertility pill for Sandra." Her voice drops to a horrified whisper.

Governor Harrington’s face contorts with exasperation. "For Christ’s sake, Director Flynn, take care of your ward!" She gestures dismissively toward the door. "We can continue this discussion after you’ve handled... that."

Her words spark something defiant inside of me. I stand up abruptly, making both women freeze.

"No," I say firmly, ignoring the discomfort of my current physical state. "I refuse to provide any more samples until Sandra is back in her old position!"

"It was an honest mistake," I insist, my voice growing stronger. "Plus, we can’t break up her and her wife. They were planning to get pregnant together! At the same time!"

Governor Harrington stares at me like I’ve grown a second head. "It’s another goddamn mess," she mutters, massaging her temples. She slumps back in her chair, suddenly looking every year of her considerable age. "I’m getting too old for this."

With a heavy sigh, she pulls Sandra’s file closer, flipping it open with practiced fingers. Her eyes scan the pages, lips pressed into a thin line. As she reads, her expression shifts subtly, eyebrows rising a fraction. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

"Oh," she says, sounding genuinely surprised. "Sandra’s record really is spotless."

"Exactly," Kate jumps in, seizing the opening. "She’s been an exemplary employee."

Governor Harrington’s finger taps against a particular line in the file. "Still... overlooking a gun is no small oversight."

My heart sinks as she closes the file with a decisive snap.

"If she does it again, it’s execution," she states flatly. "No matter how badly you don’t want it, Tyler."

I swallow hard, relief washing through me despite the severity of her warning. "Thank you, Governor. I’m sure it won’t happen again."

"It better not," she mutters, straightening papers on her desk with sharp movements. "Now get him out of here, Director Flynn. He’s practically vibrating with that damn pill."

Kate places a gentle hand on my arm, guiding me toward the door. "Thank you, Governor," Kate says formally.

As we step through the Governor’s door, Kate’s face breaks into a smile that sends a shiver down my spine. It’s not her professional smile or even her loving one, it’s something calculating and satisfied, like a chess master who’s just watched her opponent fall into a perfectly laid trap.

"Can we go somewhere private?" I ask, my voice strained as another wave of heat pulses through me. The fertility pill is making it nearly impossible to think about anything but release.

Kate leans close, her lips brushing my ear. "How about the balcony? Where we were yesterday?"

"Can we really?" I ask, my eyes widening despite the haze of arousal clouding my mind. The thought of taking her against that railing, the city spread out below us, sends a fresh surge of desire through my body.

"Tyler," Kate purrs, her fingers trailing down my arm, "we could do it right here in this hallway if that’s what you wanted." Her eyes dance with mischief as she glances at the pristine corridor outside the Governor’s office.

I swallow hard, torn between the thrill of her suggestion and the last shreds of public decency I’m clinging to.

"The balcony sounds perfect."
