I Was Just a Cleaner... Until I Got the Demon Extraction System-Chapter 75: Watchful Gaze
Damian stared at the participants from the darkness. It was different now. The dungeon had a much darker vibe, and because of it, the participants weren't so confident in going out.
There was only one participant who was still on the ground, and that was the man Damian hit in the back of the head. He was still unconscious.
But the man woke up, and when he did, things began to move. He was the voice that made everyone act.
"There's someone out there already!" he yelled, "I woke up before, and someone hit me in the head. Someone is already doing the test!"
Everyone looked at him as if he were insane. But the more he talked, the more he convinced the rest of the participants.
Also, everyone knew Damian. He was printed in their minds after what he did on the previous test. So, when they realized Damian was the missing person, they began to believe the man. Maybe he wasn't that insane after all.
The man who was knocked down by Damian became their leader. They tried to get answers from him, something that could help him get out of that situation.
"How do we leave? Do you know something?"
But he knew shit. The man barely had any time to look around before he got hit. Still, he tried to be their leader, with all his honesty.
"I don't know, but if he has already left, then it shouldn't be that hard. Let's split up and look around."
They teamed up. The people who knew Damian, like Mathias, were at a loss, especially Mathias.
"Why didn't he wake me up to go with him?" Mathias said.
One of the girls tried to comfort him. "I mean, we were drugged, apparently. Even if he tried to wake you up, it wouldn't work. And you don't expect him to carry your lazy ass around, right?"
Mathias nodded. "You're right."
They soon found the hole in the ceiling, the same one that Damian used to leave the room. But it wasn't that easy to climb up there.
Some even suggested that they should work together to get someone up, using their bodies as ladders and their strength to throw someone up there.
The man who was their current leader was the chosen person to be thrown to the ceiling. The reason for it was pretty simple: he had the strongest body.
Even with help, not everyone had what it took to climb through that hole and reach the other side.
Damian watched everything from afar. He was wondering what he should do.
"If he does come to the other side, I can take him on and be done with it," he thought, "but I still need three people to find the ritual rooms, so I cannot get in their way too soon..."
He pondered the possibilities. If he fought that man and trapped him inside the ritual room he found, then it might delay the rest of the participants. They might not have what it takes to get out of that room alone.
So, instead of acting, Damian decided to stay in the darkness, watching them from afar. One of the things he was doing was using his Demon Eye skill. The animal head mask hid Damian's eye, allowing him to use it without problems.
That was game-changing because he could see in the darkness way better than everyone else. It made his life much easier now that the dungeon was really dark.
Anyway, the participants worked together to get the man through that hole. Two participants were on the ground, using their bodies to help the 'leader' stay upright. Then, two others came and used their strength to throw the man toward the ceiling.
It was a well-coordinated move that bore fruit. It worked. The man flew toward the hole, and then he grabbed onto the walls. After that, he moved up, following the same path out that Damian had used.
When he fell on the other side of the metal bars, the remaining participants cheered up.
"He did it! He left! Now you can find a way to get us out of here."
The leader was really happy when he reached the other side. He looked at the other participants, and for a moment, he thought about leaving everyone behind.
However, despite its appeal, it wasn't a wise move.
"If I just leave them here, everyone will try to get me... It's not a good idea to become the number one enemy," the man thought.
The man did his best to help everyone. He looked around to see if there was a way to open the cell so that everyone could leave.
Damian didn't know if that was possible, but he guessed it was. When he left, he didn't waste any time looking for a way to release everyone else. He was more focused on his own progression and not on helping others.
It took the man a while to find a secret lever that opened the room. The lever was well-hidden, not just behind something, but behind a special, magical formation that concealed it. It required some luck for the man to find it.
"You did it!"
Every single person rejoiced when they were finally free. Now that the first major problem was resolved, they discussed what was happening with each other.
They wanted to know if someone remembered what happened. It didn't take long for them to realize what had happened. Apparently, the man who woke up with Damian didn't eat a lot of the soup that night. So, his body had less of the poison they used to make everyone sleep.
While Damian thought that the man had a powerful body like his, it wasn't entirely the case.
"We don't know what we need to do yet, but let's keep moving. Eventually, we will find out. But this place is massive, so I don't think we should all go together. Maybe team up? In duos or trios."
Everyone agreed on that. They split up, each one following a specific direction. When that happened, Damian had to move. He was close to where they were, and even with his concealed aura and the darkness, he couldn't stay in the same place forever.
However, it was not a problem for him to move without being seen. While the participants had to use some sort of lightning to guide their way — torches they found, and some used their special skills — Damian didn't need any of that.
They could only see a limited area with their way of lighting up the dungeon, while Damian could see them from far away. So, all he had to do was keep moving slightly faster than them, and still keep an eye on them and what they were doing.
Not only that, but Damian could also hear their conversation with ease. The examiners watching it through the cameras realized that.
"That guy can either see in the darkness or is so skilled that he always maintains the right distance between himself and the rest of them."
"Right? I think he can see in the darkness, that's the only reason he would keep watching them like that."
"But if I remember correctly, someone else can see in the dark, right? What will happen when this person sees him with that attire..."
Damian didn't know any of that. He moved through the dungeon, watching each group for a while. He wanted to know what everyone was doing, and not just one specific group. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
Then, he reached the group where Mathias was. Mathias was with two unknown people. One of them was a lady with eyes that had two different colors. It was quite unique.
Damian did the same thing he did with the other groups: keeping a safe distance so that they didn't know where he was. But that didn't work with that group in particular.
The problem was that the girl with eyes of different colors was the one who could see in the dark. When she saw Damian standing there, in the darkness with that animal mask, she froze.
But she tried her best to act normal. She continued doing the same things she had been doing before finding him, which were to talk with Mathias and the other girl, and look for clues about what the next test was about.
She then came closer to Mathias and whispered, "There's a person standing there in the darkness."
Damian didn't hear it. He wasn't that close to them, so he could only hear when they talked normally. Whispers were beyond his capabilities.
Mathias whispered back, "What do you mean? It's impossible to see anything with this darkness."
The girl shared her secret. She didn't want others to know it, but at that point, she and Mathias were on good terms.
"I have night vision," she whispered, "there's a creepy man with fur clothes and a deer head. For some reason, he is just staring at us."
Mathias didn't say anything for a few seconds, processing what he had just heard.
"What the fuck?" he whispered, "Are you sure?"
"How can I not be sure? The man is right there... What are we supposed to do?"
Damian saw them whispering, but he had no idea it was about him...
