Chapter 94: Sophia in danger

Johnny was no fool. He had been suspicious of the one-billion-dollar bounty from the start. A price that high on a simple schoolboy did not make sense. It smelled like a trap. He knew the target had to be incredibly dangerous.

That was why he had brought his entire force. Over five hundred men. He had intended to overwhelm the target with sheer numbers.

and take the bounty by himself.

He was not a legendary assassin. He was a businessman. He ran a small but profitable branch of the underworld specializing in extortion kidnapping and other unsavory but lucrative ventures.

He had his own small army a private militia of loyal thugs and hired guns. He was a small-time king a minor lord in the vast and dangerous kingdom of the underworld. And he had just kicked a hornet’s nest.

He had stumbled into a fight that was far bigger and far more terrifying than he could have ever imagined. From his perch on the catwalk he watched the lone schoolboy dance through the storm of bullets and he felt a chill of genuine fear.

But even with all his men even with all his firepower Johnny was afraid. He could not get the image of Adam’s eyes out of his mind.

The look on his face when he had killed his own girlfriend after confessing his feelings it was the look of a monster. A cold calculating monster.

This boy has to die, Johnny thought his heart pounding in his chest. He finally understood why the big families were so afraid of him. The families that controlled the underworld the families that were rumored to control the government of this country they were terrified of this one boy.

They knew that if he were allowed to live he would destroy their empires. And Johnny knew that he would be the first to fall all because of his own stupidity.

Even with five hundred men at his command he was not confident that they could kill Adam. He looked down from the catwalk at the chaos below. He saw Adam moving through the hail of gunfire a blur of motion.

He was using the heavy machinery as cover disappearing and reappearing in different places as if he were teleporting. His men could not get a clean shot.

A stray burst of gunfire riddled Sophia’s body on the floor. Adam saw it and a fresh wave of cold fury washed over him. He knew that if he did not do something soon he would end up just like her.

He had to kill them all.

He identified the biggest threat. The men on the catwalks. They were high above him their automatic rifles raining down a relentless stream of fire.

From his position on the factory floor he could not return fire effectively. He was a sitting duck.

More bullets slammed into him. His Iron Skin was holding but he knew it would not last forever. He had to change his tactics. He had to take the high ground.

The constant barrage of bullets was finally taking its toll. The relentless impacts were overwhelming his Iron Skin. More and more rounds were breaking through the protective layer lodging themselves deep in his flesh.

The pain was immense a constant searing fire.

He had to end this quickly. He fought with a renewed ferocity a desperate fury. He took cover behind a large rusted machine. His pistols were empty. He dismissed them back into his inventory and summoned his combat knife.

He burst from behind his cover a whirlwind of death. He carved a bloody path through the mercenaries on the ground floor. His knife was a blur of motion a silver streak that delivered swift and brutal ends.

But this close-quarters combat came at a terrible cost. He was an easy target. More bullets found their mark tearing into his body. Two rounds grazed his face.

They were deflected by his failing Iron Skin but they left deep bloody gashes on his cheeks. He knew he could not keep this up for much longer. He was bleeding too much. He was slowing down.

He summoned his second knife preparing for one last desperate charge. But then he saw it. An automatic rifle lying on the ground next to a dead mercenary. It was a lifeline a chance to turn the tide of the battle.

He changed his plan instantly. He dove to the ground sliding across the oil-stained concrete floor towards the fallen weapon.

He grabbed the rifle and scrambled for cover behind a large piece of machinery in the center of the factory.

This was his opportunity. The men on the catwalks above had little cover. They were protected only by a thin metal railing. They were exposed targets.

He peeked out from behind the machine raising the rifle to his shoulder. He took aim at the men on the catwalk. He was about to open fire when two more bullets slammed into his shoulder. This time they did not just get stuck in his skin.

They punched straight through shattering his bone and sending a wave of agonizing pain through his entire body.

He looked down at his ruined shoulder and he realized with a dawning horror that his Iron Skin was failing. It had reached its limit. He was vulnerable again. He was mortal again. The thought was more terrifying than any physical pain.

But Adam ignored the pain. He was a creature of pure will now a being driven by a singular purpose. He gritted his teeth against the searing agony in his shoulder and raised the automatic rifle.

He aimed it at the men on the catwalk and unleashed a torrent of fire.

The rifle bucked in his hands a wild untamed beast. The bullets tore through the men on the catwalk. They screamed as the high-caliber rounds ripped through their bodies.

They tumbled over the thin metal railing their bodies falling like broken dolls to the factory floor below.
