Chapter 98: Chapter 98: New Type of War

|3rd POV|

"WHAT?!"

Andreas can hear the king of the Gokuya Kingdom shout in anger.

"Why?! Why did they decide to retreat at the last minute?! My plan should be working! It was a perfect plan! That only leaves one thing! One of you decided to betray me!"

Andreas decides it is time to walk away from the meeting room as the king calls the other guards to torture their advisor, who keeps their mouths shut as far as he knows.

He is deeply thinking about why the Northern Army decided to retreat. He makes sure to hide the corpse from anyone outside the barrier, and only when they get inside the barrier will they notice it. The barrier will only show what is inside the barrier from the outside if they already have the information beforehand.

That only leaves one thing, and he did not like it. That means someone in the Northern Army can get inside the barrier, see the corpses, and then get out of that city. That is a problem for him because he prides himself as a spy and already investigates all the people in the Northern Army.

And not a single one of the people who have awakened talent can get inside the barrier and get out without destroying the entire barrier.

The Southern Group have a talent for battle, while the Northern Group have a talent for supporting their overall fighting style in combat. However, there is not one of them that can walk past the barrier and get out without destroying it.

Only someone who is not physical can go inside the barrier and get out without destroying the barrier. There is not a single person in the Northern Army who can do that. That is why Andreas chose this barrier in the first place.

He shakes his head and begins to think about how to take care of the problem of feeding the device with that many souls. That device is still in the prototype stage because he and his group have never tested it before.

This will be the testing stage for them. If all of it is according to their plan, the device will summon the monster to the physical plane, and they can take note of how many of them they can summon with this device. He already got the information about its stability. There were a couple of problems, but it was within his expectations.

The problem is how many monsters it can summon before the Void Crack closes off and how many of them they can control. He and his group have a monster-controlling device that lets them control a large number of monsters and even a strong monster.

However, there are many monsters they can control. Usually, it was a monster that had exceptional strength.

If the Northern Army follows his plan, they will fight the monsters inside the city so he can note down how many monsters the device can summon before it runs out of fuel. The Northern Army will be the one taking care of the monsters while he tries to take control of the stronger monster and take them into his hidden lab.

However, as the Northern Army retreated, that left him with a problem. A massive problem. Without the Northern Army reducing the number of monsters coming out of that Void Crack, a monster wave will come out of that cursed city.

Now he needs to prepare something before the Void Crack appears. He set the monster-summoning device to activate when more than a thousand people enter the city to summon the Void Crack. However, it will also activate when he leaves it too long and not pacify the chaotic energy inside the crystal so he can take it away.

Just as he is about to arrive at his hidden lab, he can feel something explode from his pocket. He grunts a little, knowing that that exploded and injured his tight. He slowly puts his hand inside his pocket and takes out a remnant of a glass orb.

He can only sigh and open the hidden door to his lab.

"The barrier is gone, and the monsters will pour out of the city. That means they will come here or the North. However, the North is too far away, and the monsters will sense a high number of living beings from the Gokuya Kingdom."

He takes a seat and looks at the innocent orb sitting on the table in front of him. Andreas hesitates to call his lord, but he knows he will be punished if he does not report this disaster to his lord.

After taking a deep breath, he puts his hand on the orb and pushes his mana into it. A few seconds later, he can see his lord’s face inside the orb.

"My lord. I bring bad news."

While the higher people in the Gokuya Kingdom are busy making sure the monsters do not reach the capital city, the Northern Army manages to go back to the Dawn Fortress in record time. Without the monster in their way, they manage to get back to the Dawn Fortress in a week.

"We are here."

Gwyndolin mutters and releases a relief breath. He smiles a little when he sees the elves, who guard the fortress while we are away, waving at him. He waves back as he walks past the gate.

As they get inside, the leader of the elves walks forward and bows a little to Alexander and Arthur.

"My lord, welcome back."

"We are back, Gyan-Tar."

Gyan-Tar, the grandson of the previous leader of the elves, is now the leader of the elves. His grandfather decided to retire and take care of the farm for Gwyn. Not only are the elves good with magic, but they are natural green thumbs that can use their magic to ensure the plant grows faster and healthier.

My father decided to ask the elves to help them defend the fortress by sending a letter to Gyan-Tar’s grandfather a few hours after their fight against the monster wave.

"How is the fortress? Any strange movement?"

Gyan-Tar shakes his head and says.

"No. At the moment, there is nothing wrong in the area around here. We fight a small monster wave three times while you are away."

"Nothing too big? How many of them per monster wave?"

"The monster?"

Alexander nods and lets Gyan-Tar continue.

"The highest is almost a thousand, I think. I did not count. The lowest number is around fifty to sixty."

"I see."

"Can I ask the reason why, my lord? Your letter only says that you will return to this fortress, not the reason."

Alexander takes a deep breath and says.

"Something bad happened. The Gokuya Kingdom is going insane. They decide to use a monster-summoning device by sacrificing the entire population of Bakuran City and trap us inside the city to fight against potentially a million monsters."

Gyan-Tar’s expression gets pale at that news. He already knows monster-summoning devices, and the Gokuya Kingdom uses them by sacrificing a dozen people to activate them. However, he cannot imagine how many monsters it will summon if there are more than a thousand people it needs to sacrifice.

"That... That is horrible."

"Yes, and dangerous. We need to get out of here and regroup in the Shadowfall."

"Not here?"

"No."

Alexander shakes his head and says.

"It is too dangerous. We will get surrounded by monsters, and with this many monsters... I’m afraid there will be a lot of villages under attack. We need to warn the other people to move away from their village for the time being, two to four months, just to make sure."

"I see. Should we pack our things?"

"No. We will stay here for a few days to rest before returning home."

"Of course, my lord."

"Good. Let’s go inside. I need to–"

Before Alexander can say more, a cold wind passes them, and as one, all the people look to the south. Gwyndolin’s expression changes from smiling to frowning the second he feels this cold wind.

"The Void Crack has appeared, and the monster will start attacking the barrier. We did not have too much time."

"Dammit!"

Alexander roars in anger and looks at the rest of the people behind him.

"It looks like we cannot even rest. We will continue our journey! We will stay here for a moment before we will get back marching back home! Eat, sleep, or take a bath! We will march in four hours!"

The soldiers want to stay here for a day or two to rest their bodies from the constant moving, but even they can feel that cold and stink mana wash over them. Even the ones who did not have mana sensitivity can feel the cold mana wash over them.

They decide to obey Alexander’s word and rest for a moment. Some quickly go to sleep while others prepare the food to eat.

The war is not over, but it has changed. It changes for the worst.
