Chapter 51: Chapter 51: The Scent of the Bloodline

The cell door slowly opened, and a stench of blood mixed with rot rushed out.

Qiao Lie had been watching the cell across from him. He saw the Black Bear Demon Beast walk inside.

"Argh!"

Suddenly, a cry of pain came from within, and a figure flew out, slamming hard against the door of Qiao Lie’s cell.

A hole the size of a person’s head visibly appeared in the door.

Qiao Lie stared at the hole and slowly crept toward it.

"Sunxiao, I’ll kill you."

The Black Bear Demon Beast scrambled to its feet and charged back inside.

When it flew out again, only the upper half of its body remained.

The eyes of the other demon beasts held a ghastly glimmer of fear.

While the demon beasts weren’t paying attention to him, Qiao Lie cautiously shifted into his beast form and squeezed through the crack.

Seeing this, Bai Qi scoffed.

Sure enough, the moment Qiao Lie got out, the cries of Black Crow Beasts echoed from above.

Qiao Lie’s heart jumped. He looked up and saw countless Black Crow Beasts circling above the dungeon.

When the Black Crow Beasts saw he had crawled out, they opened their beaks, shrieked, and flew toward him.

Qiao Lie scrambled to dodge, but there were simply too many Black Crow Beasts; he couldn’t possibly evade them all.

Hearing the commotion, the demon beasts in front of the cell turned around.

When they saw the escaping Qiao Lie, they stomped over menacingly and seized him from the swarm of Black Crow Beasts.

The demon beast froze for a moment when it saw Qiao Lie.

’This...’

"What are you gawking at? Audacious little snake, you actually dared to escape! Since you want to run so badly, we’ll let you run your fill!"

The Hyena Demon Beast whose arm had been severed grabbed Qiao Lie and hurled him into the cell across the way.

After throwing Qiao Lie inside, he quickly ordered the other demon beasts to shut the cell door.

"Little snake, let’s see where you can run to now."

’He couldn’t handle Sunxiao, but surely he could take care of one little snake!’

Qiao Lie hit the ground, and by the time he tried to scramble up, the cell door had already been shut.

Qiao Lie pounded on the door, but it was made of a thick, massive slab of rock. There was no way he could open it with his strength alone.

Qiao Lie’s pounding stopped. He felt a powerful, bone-chilling presence behind him.

He slowly turned his head and found himself staring into a pair of crimson snake eyes, almost identical to his own.

Startled, Qiao Lie pressed his body flat against the stone door.

A massive, crimson snake head was almost touching his face.

Sunxiao sniffed at Qiao Lie, his snake pupils suddenly narrowing into vertical slits.

He could smell the scent of his own bloodline on the boy.

Qiao Lie clenched his small fists, ready to fight back at any moment.

Even though he had no chance of defeating the giant snake before him, he would never surrender without a fight.

The giant snake head rose high, looking down on Qiao Lie with an imposing air.

"Where did you come from?" The deep voice was devoid of any warmth.

Qiao Lie pressed his lips together and said nothing.

Sunxiao flicked his forked tongue out impatiently.

"Are you mute?"

"I’m not! If you’re going to eat me, then get on with it! I’m not afraid of you."

There was no trace of emotion in Sunxiao’s crimson pupils. He slowly swayed his massive tail and coiled leisurely on the ground.

"Come here."

Qiao Lie didn’t move.

Sunxiao’s red eyes darkened. "Disobey, and I’ll snap your tail off."

Qiao Lie’s gaze shifted, and he saw the Hyena Demon Beast’s severed arm lying nearby.

Frowning, Qiao Lie walked over to Sunxiao’s side.

Suddenly, a flash of red light flared before his eyes, and Sunxiao’s enormous snake body transformed into a red-haired man.

His skin was so pale it was nearly transparent, and his loose red hair made his crimson eyes look all the more striking.

He was dressed in a crimson robe, a garment unlike any of the beast-hide clothing Qiao Lie had ever seen.

Qiao Lie stared at the fang mark under the man’s eye—identical to his own—and his eyes widened in astonishment.

"You... Why is yours... the same as mine?"

Sunxiao expressionlessly regarded what was essentially a miniature version of himself.

’He was also wondering how he suddenly had a child of his bloodline.’

’Could it be...’

Sunxiao suddenly recalled that reckless female from three years ago.

’Could she have given birth to this little snake?’

At the thought of that female, a murderous glint erupted in Sunxiao’s eyes.

"You’ve been abandoned."

It wasn’t a question, but a statement of fact.

Qiao Lie’s small face fell.

"My mother didn’t abandon me! I was captured and brought here, and my mother is here, too!"

"She’s here, too? That saves me the trouble of hunting her down."

He couldn’t wait to kill that female.

When Sunxiao said nothing, Qiao Lie assumed he still thought he had been abandoned by Qiao Xixi, and he grew very upset.

’He wasn’t some unwanted little snake!’

"My mother... she loves me the most! She would never abandon me!"

Sunxiao’s gaze shifted, landing on the child’s small, flushed face.

"You’re a cold-blooded, savage, and bloodthirsty snake beast. As if she would still want you."

In the past, Qiao Lie would have been unable to refute those words.

But now, he declared loudly, "That’s not true! My mother is the absolute best!"

A flicker of doubt crossed Sunxiao’s eyes. He didn’t believe that such a foolish female would care about a little snake.

Sunxiao’s long legs transformed into a snake tail, which he used to pat Qiao Lie on the small of his back.

The pat sent Qiao Lie stumbling to the ground.

"What are you doing?!"

Now that Qiao Lie knew this terrifying snake beastman was likely his father, he wasn’t as afraid anymore. In fact, he was even a little angry.

Sunxiao withdrew his tail with a look of disdain.

"Not even a one-star beast soul. Weak."

Qiao Lie was indignant. ’He was only three years old!’

"I’ll definitely be stronger than you one day."

Sunxiao closed his eyes, leaned against the stone wall, and fell silent.

Seeing that he wasn’t moving, Qiao Lie began to survey his surroundings.

He saw that Sunxiao was bound with numerous stone chains, each one thicker than his own leg. ’No wonder he can’t get out,’ he thought.

Qiao Lie returned to the stone door and tried again and again to open it.

But no matter what he did, the door remained unmoving.

Sunxiao opened his eyes and watched the small, thin figure, his face an emotionless mask.

’So weak.’

After struggling for a long time to no avail, a dejected Qiao Lie sat on the ground.

After a moment’s thought, he walked back over to Sunxiao. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

"Do you know how to get out?"

Sunxiao didn’t open his eyes, his snake tail merely swishing back and forth unconsciously.

Qiao Lie gritted his teeth and frowned.

"My mother was captured, too. I need to get out and save her."

Only then did Sunxiao slowly open his eyes.

"Call me Father."

Qiao Lie looked reluctant.

"If I do, will you get me out of here?"

"What makes you think you’re in any position to bargain?"

Qiao Lie clenched his fists, the words barely forced from his throat.

"Fa... ther."

"Go temper yourself in the Beast Fighting Arena."

"What?"

Sunxiao gazed at him with cold, red eyes.

"If you can survive in the Beast Fighting Arena, I will help you."

’A cub this weak is not worthy of being my child.’

Meanwhile, Qiao Xixi was led out of the cave.

The moment she stepped out, she realized they were on a sheer cliff face. She and the other females had been imprisoned in caves carved directly into the rock.

A male, yellow fox demon beast led the way.

After he led Qiao Xixi out of the cliff-side cave, the Stone City appeared before them.
