Chapter 65: Chapter 65: We Are a Family

"I was wondering what had you all looking so worried. And here I find it’s just a matter of money."

"Mom, Dad, Brother, if it’s a problem money can solve, then it’s not really a problem."

"Mr. Callahan is a good man. He’s always been kind to you two, and our families get along well. Now that he’s in trouble, we have to help where we can."

"Especially you, Brother. You’re his son-in-law, after all. You can’t just do nothing."

"Mom gave me these three hundred when I came home last month. You take it for now. If it’s not enough, I have more..."

As Grace Winslow spoke, she started pulling money right out of her bag.

Nolan Winslow quickly refused. "No, I can’t take your money. How could I?"

"Brother, Sister-in-law has always been so good to me. We’re family. Why draw lines between ’yours’ and ’mine’? Besides, it’s not like you won’t pay me back when you have money again, right?"

"I’m not just giving it to you, I’m lending it. You have to pay me back."

Grace Winslow looked at Nolan Winslow with a serious expression and stuffed the money directly into his hand.

"Anyway, what matters most are the people involved. I’m going to check on my sister-in-law. Brother, you should take this money over to the Callahans’ place first." With that, Grace Winslow gave a little wave, turned, and left.

Nolan Winslow’s eyes reddened. He raised a hand to rub them. "Mom, Dad, my sister..."

"Since Grace gave it to you, just take it. I can spare another hundred. That’ll make it five hundred. The priority is to save him. Your sister is right, we’re all family. Don’t be such a stranger, and don’t draw such clear lines." Irene Lynch sighed, then turned and went back to get another hundred yuan for Nolan Winslow.

Holding the money in his hand, Nolan Winslow felt its immense weight.

When Grace Winslow arrived at Nolan Winslow’s home, only Ryan Winslow was there, doing his homework.

"Ryan, where’s your mom?" Grace Winslow asked as she pushed the door open and went inside.

Ryan Winslow stood up. "Auntie, you’re here. Mom’s resting in her room."

Grace Winslow slipped him a handful of White Rabbit creamy candies and went into the room.

Lily Callahan looked terrible. Compared to the last time they’d met, she had lost a noticeable amount of weight, and her energy and spirits were low.

When Grace Winslow entered, she was sitting on the bed, silently crying.

As soon as she saw Grace Winslow come in, she quickly turned away and wiped the tears from her face.

"Grace, what brings you here?"

"Sister-in-law, why didn’t you come to the factory and tell me something so huge was happening?" Grace Winslow sat on the edge of the bed and took Lily Callahan’s hand.

Lily Callahan had been married into the Winslow family for over eight years and had always treated Grace very well.

Their family didn’t have any of the usual problems between sisters-in-law.

Lily Callahan looked after her as if she were her own flesh-and-blood sister, even treating her better than her actual sister.

Grace Winslow had always been very close with her as well.

She stroked Lily Callahan’s face. "Sister-in-law, you have to take care of yourself. There’s a solution to everything."

At these words, Lily Callahan couldn’t hold back her tears any longer. "Grace, I’m so useless."

"My dad never favored boys over girls; he always treated my brother and me exactly the same. Now that he’s had an accident, I want to contribute money and help out."

"But we have Ryan to think about, and I’m pregnant again. Your brother and I don’t earn much, and buying this house used up most of our savings. We’re still in a lot of debt."

"I... I can’t even come up with a hundred yuan for his treatment..."

As she reached the end, Lily Callahan couldn’t help but throw herself into Grace Winslow’s arms and sob. "Grace, what... what am I supposed to do? Whenever I think that... that I might not have a father anymore... my heart just hurts so, so much..."

Grace Winslow’s eyes reddened as well. She raised a hand and patted Lily Callahan’s back. "It’s okay, Sister-in-law. We can all help solve the money problem. Mr. Callahan will definitely get better."

"Sister-in-law, you can’t fall apart now. The family needs you."

"As long as our family sticks together, there’s no hardship we can’t overcome."

"I gave my brother some money, which should be enough for the initial treatment. The most urgent thing right now is to get Uncle to the provincial capital immediately."

"Auntie is surely in no state to handle things right now. Getting the referral letters and all that—it’s all up to you. Sister-in-law, you have to stay strong."

Hearing Grace Winslow’s words, Lily Callahan just cried even harder.
