I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home-Chapter 41: I Couldn’t Bear to Let You Work, But Him...
"May Callahan? What are you doing here?"
Caleb Forrest really didn’t want to see May Callahan right now. Just the sight of her made his skin crawl.
May Callahan shot him an eye-roll and said irritably, "Caleb Forrest, you think I wanted to come looking for you? I can’t get ahold of Ivy White, and I don’t know where she lives. So what’s her plan? Is she going to pay back the five thousand yuan or not?"
"If she’s planning to skip out on the debt, I’m going to the police. That’ll be ugly for everyone involved."
Caleb Forrest opened his mouth to speak.
Five thousand yuan was a huge sum.
There was no way Ivy White could come up with that kind of money right now.
"May Callahan, is it really necessary to push her so hard? She lost her man, and it’s already tough raising a child on her own..."
Before Caleb Forrest could finish, May Callahan cut him off irritably. "Who has it easy these days?"
"So she has it hard. You think my life is a walk in the park?"
"Everyone’s life is tough, so don’t try to pull that sob story on me. There are plenty of people worse off than Ivy White, and I don’t usually see you being so charitable."
"I don’t care. I gave her three days. It’s either the money, or she gets arrested."
Caleb pressed his temples. "She can’t pay that much."
"Her baby was just born. Can’t you cut her some slack..."
"Are you kidding me? Is her baby mine or something? Am I supposed to take care of her and her kid now?"
"Caleb Forrest, you’ve really got some nerve."
She cut Caleb Forrest off once again.
Caleb grew angry. "I’m the deputy director of this factory. Isn’t my guarantee good enough?"
"Who can come up with five thousand yuan all at once? You have to give her a chance. I’m already arranging a job for Ivy White. Once she starts working, she can use her monthly earnings to slowly pay back the factory."
"We’re not going anywhere. We’re not going to run."
May Callahan seemed to ponder this. "What department are you planning to put her in this time? Let me warn you, Caleb Forrest, don’t let her end up owing the factory even more money instead of earning any."
Caleb’s face stiffened, his expression turning ugly. That was a real concern.
But right now, he had no better solution.
"I have five hundred here. I’ll pay a portion for her first. For the rest, she can pay a little each month. That should be acceptable, right?" Caleb took a thick, solid envelope from his drawer, stuffed full of cash.
She took it, counted the money, then gave Caleb Forrest a strange look. "You really are good to her."
With that, she turned and left with the money.
A short while later, Grace Winslow arrived.
"Deputy Director, Ms. Callahan asked me to give you this receipt. There’s also an IOU. Please sign it and add your thumbprint." Her face was devoid of expression.
It was as if the man standing before her wasn’t the ex-husband she had divorced just days ago, but a complete stranger.
Caleb Forrest looked at Grace Winslow.
He’d known she was beautiful before they married, but now, dressed in a light-brown work uniform, her hair neatly combed with two braids falling over her shoulders, she was breathtaking.
"Grace..." he began, unable to help himself.
Grace Winslow reminded him in a cold voice, "Deputy Director, it’s working hours. Please don’t make things difficult for me. Sign the IOU so I can go back and report to my superior."
Caleb’s expression soured. He took a deep breath, forcing himself not to lash out.
He signed his name, but couldn’t resist a sarcastic dig. "Where’s that lover of yours? How could he bear to let you come out to work?"
"After you married me, I couldn’t bear to let you work. But him... Heh."
The mockery in his words was loud and clear.
