I Returned to the Day He Brought His First Love Home-Chapter 126: I’d Like to See How Noble You Are
Yvonne Hale watched as Irene Lynch and Gregory Winslow began to eat, and she was practically fuming.
’Is a chicken leg something low-lifes like them can afford to eat?’
’It should have been for me!’
She was starving right now.
But this time, her family had been unwilling to give her any money for the trip.
Her brothers were all married, and their wives kept a tight rein on the family’s finances. Plus, with a new baby born before the New Year, she had only been able to bring a few steamed buns with her.
Steamed buns were made from fine grain, so being able to afford them was already quite good.
But comparisons were the worst.
The moment she made the comparison, she felt like what she was eating was garbage.
Grace Winslow couldn’t care less if she was going mad with jealousy.
She, along with Irene Lynch and Gregory Winslow, finished off all the dishes and meat buns.
She rubbed her round, full belly, took a big gulp of hot water, and felt completely satisfied.
"It’s a shame we don’t have anything to keep it warm. The food will be cold by tonight, and it’s not easy to reheat."
There were no such things as microwave ovens in this era.
After they had eaten and drunk their fill, Grace Winslow and Irene Lynch took the dishes to wash them.
Gregory Winslow sat there, resting.
Yvonne Hale glanced down below her.
Gregory Winslow had long held a high-ranking position, and his aura was extraordinary. The clothes he wore were made of top-quality material; one look and you could tell he was a leader.
After a moment’s thought, she spoke up. "Sir, was that your wife and daughter just now?"
Gregory Winslow looked up, his cold, sharp gaze landing on Yvonne Hale.
Although he had been resting, he hadn’t missed the scene where Yvonne Hale had made things difficult for Irene Lynch.
So naturally, he wasn’t about to give Yvonne Hale a pleasant look.
As if she hadn’t noticed, Yvonne Hale continued on her own. "Sir, it’s not my place to say, but your wife... she really doesn’t seem worthy of you. Aren’t you afraid she’ll embarrass you when you take her out?"
"Sir, I think people should still marry within their own social status. Did you have to go down to the countryside for some unavoidable reason back then, and end up marrying a country woman from a village?"
"If you ask me, you don’t need to be responsible for her at all. Just divorce her and come back to the city. With your standing, what kind of woman couldn’t you find?"
"There’d be no shortage of young and beautiful ones, either."
Gregory Winslow’s expression grew even colder. After Yvonne Hale had finished, he finally spoke. "Are you suggesting I should divorce my wife and then find someone young and beautiful?"
"And who is this young and beautiful woman you’re talking about? Is it you?"
Yvonne Hale froze for a moment, then a look of delight appeared on her face. Thinking she looked attractive, she tucked her long hair behind her ear. "Me? Well, you’re much older than I am, but... but I... I don’t really mind."
"Sir, I..."
"Hmph! What fine upbringing! Is this how your parents raised you? To cheapen yourself like this? To the point where you’re willing to be a homewrecker and marry an old man about the same age as your father?"
"Comrade, I advise you to stop spouting nonsense. Otherwise, I will find the train police immediately and report you for hooliganism," Gregory Winslow cut her off coldly, his rebuke merciless.
Yvonne Hale’s face burned as if she had been slapped.
She wanted to say something else, but Grace Winslow and Irene Lynch had already returned, talking and laughing.
Glancing at Yvonne Hale on the top bunk, Grace Winslow said coldly, "You want to seduce my dad, and you want to be my mom?"
"I’d say you’re pretty ugly, but you sure have beautiful dreams."
Irene Lynch didn’t look pleased, either.
They had heard what Yvonne Hale said from the doorway as they were coming back.
Irene Lynch was usually a very amicable person.
But now, she wore a rare scowl.
Yvonne Hale was so ashamed she wished a hole would open up in the ground and swallow her.
She turned away, pulling the blanket over her head to hide her face. She was too mortified to face anyone.
"Dad, Mom, you two get some rest. I’ll read for a bit and keep an eye on things. After all, if she’s bold enough to seduce a man, who knows if she’d steal something too."
As she spoke, Grace Winslow shot a pointed look at Yvonne Hale’s bunk.
Yvonne Hale, under her blanket, was so angry she could have coughed up blood. But she had indeed said things she shouldn’t have, and if Grace Winslow and her family decided to pursue the matter, she knew it wouldn’t end well for her.
However, Yvonne Hale didn’t regret it one bit.
Her family had two working parents, but with so many children, she was the unfavored daughter. Anything she wanted, she had to earn with her own two hands.
’She just wanted a better life. What was so wrong with that?’
Grace Winslow had brought a few books she’d bought from a salvage station. The train ride was long and boring, so she took one out to read.
Yvonne Hale huddled under her blanket for a while, but eventually, she got so hungry she couldn’t stand it anymore and climbed down to eat.
Seeing Grace Winslow sitting there reading, she couldn’t help but mutter "So pretentious" under her breath.
But when she got down, she discovered that one of her shoes was missing.
She searched the entire carriage but couldn’t find it, and she finally exploded, "Which one of you stole my shoe?"
"I knew you country folk had sticky fingers! Stealing things! Give me back my shoe!"
As she spoke, she reached out to rip the blanket off Irene Lynch.
Grace Winslow leaped down from the top bunk, grabbed Yvonne Hale’s hand, and forcefully shoved her away. "What do you think you’re doing?"
"What am I doing? Your mother stole my shoe! Old country women have never seen the world; she’s probably never seen such nice shoes before, right? A shoe thief! Shameless!"
"Give me back my shoe right now, or I’m getting the train attendant!"
Grace Winslow scoffed disdainfully, stepped forward, and looked down at Yvonne Hale. "You say it was stolen, so it was stolen? Where’s your proof?"
"Barking like a mad dog without any proof. I could just as easily say you were trying to steal our things."
"If you want to get the attendant, go right ahead. I’d also like someone to come and judge who’s right here, and we can all see just how noble a woman who keeps calling people ’country folk’ really is!"
Yvonne Hale’s face turned red with anger. "You’re being completely unreasonable!"
"My shoes were right here when I got into my bunk. Now one is gone. If you didn’t steal it, who did? Those shoes cost twelve yuan a pair! Give it back!"
With that, Yvonne Hale tried to get physical.
But Grace Winslow wasn’t about to indulge her.
Her recent physical training and martial arts practice proved to be quite useful.
In an instant, she had Yvonne Hale’s wrist in a lock and pinned her to the floor.
"Dad, go get the attendant. I want to see just how far this woman is willing to take her baseless accusations," Grace Winslow said to Gregory Winslow without turning her head.
Irene Lynch was already up, her brow furrowed and her expression grim.
Gregory Winslow got up, left, and returned a moment later with a train attendant and an officer from the train police.
After all, Yvonne Hale had claimed something was stolen, so it was necessary to have someone investigate.
When she saw them arrive, Grace Winslow released Yvonne Hale.
Yvonne Hale was a mess. She started screaming like a madwoman, "You’re bullying me! The three of you ganging up on me! I want to change carriages!"
"You stole my things! Do you really think I’m easy to bully?"
"Let me tell you, I, Yvonne Hale, am not someone to be trifled with! If you don’t return my property, I’ll make such a scene that you’ll all end up in jail!"
"Give me back my shoe!"
Yvonne Hale was throwing a hysterical fit, regardless of anything else.
The attendant couldn’t get any sense out of her, so he had to ask Grace Winslow and her family what happened.
Grace Winslow explained the situation from beginning to end.
The attendant’s jaw dropped. After a long moment, he said, "Ah, a black leather shoe, right? My colleague just found one in the corridor outside. Wait a moment, I’ll go get it. You can see if it’s the one you lost."
With that, he turned and left.
Grace Winslow snorted, crossing her arms. She looked coldly at Yvonne Hale, who was still on the floor making a scene. "Well, Yvonne Hale, was it? If that turns out to be your shoe, I expect you to apologize to my mother."
