Chapter 94: 94:Awake

The bedroom was dim when his consciousness slowly returned. His body felt heavy and his eyes couldn’t open on command.

Atheline tried to force them open but he couldn’t, his body refused to respond to him.

He relaxed, feeling the pain from his chest and stomach but it had become more bearable.

’It seems I got the suppressants’

He stopped trying and waited for his body to wake on its own.

Even in his semi-conscious state, he could still hear Lilith and the healers conversing from afar.

The suppressant, a small round ball of compressed medicine, had been pushed into his mouth and instantly melted.

It tasted different from what he had expected, sweet and with a hint of sourness.

Atheline relaxed his mind and let sleep take him.

When he woke up again, morning had come as sunlight filtered through the closed curtains. This time his eyes fluttered open.

He closed them immediately before opening as they adjusted to the lighting.

The room smelled of herbs and jasmine.

He quickly became aware of his body fragments. His weight, the searing heat, the pain, and the shallow heavy breaths that were taxing to his lungs.

Her voice came, forcing him out of his self-assessment.

"You’re awake," she said in a controlled tone.

Atheline didn’t turn towards her immediately; instead, his eyes were the first to shift as though the effort cost him then followed by his head to the right.

She stood near the window, her arms crossed as she looked at him. Atheline stared back in silence before he softly sighed.

"You should be resting," he said in a rough but steady voice.

His throat hurt when he spoke and his tongue felt as though it had lead on it.

She didn’t respond but her glare was enough for Atheline to understand.

"You are in no position to advise me," she calmly said and walked towards him.

The right side of the bed dipped then her scent encompassed him and she drew near. Atheline turned his head and looked up at her.

"How do you feel?"

Her hand touched his cheek then moved to his forehead.

Atheline sighed softly at the cool touch.

He released a small exhale and met her gaze.

"As you can see, I miscalculated," he quietly said.

This earned him a reaction. Her hand slipped from his face and her glare became more menacing. The sharp intake of breath could not be hidden.

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Miscalculated," she repeated incredulously.

"Yes."

His gaze drifted away from her and settled on a small beam of light as though considering something he himself couldn’t fully understand yet.

"Do you take this...."

"The timing, the severity," he cut her mid-sentence as he continued almost absentmindedly," I expected to remain conscious longer."

His gaze returned to hers and they both held it. Lilith didn’t move or even react, she looked as though she had been frozen with the same expression.

This was not an answer of someone who had been surprised but that of someone who had planned everything from the start.

The little hope she had evaporated just like that.

She then moved.

Lilith got out of bed almost violently as the bed covers followed behind her.

Her breath was heavy as she suppressed her anger.

"You ingested poison."

It wasn’t a question. Atheline maintained eye contact.

"Yes," he admitted.

"You understood what it would do."

"Yes."

"And yet," she continued her voice tightening just slightly," you call it a miscalculation."

The sound of breaking glass filled the room. Lilith had accidentally hit the crystal lamp on the bedside while she was gesturing.

None of them turned to look at the mess. Atheline shifted slightly raising his upper body.

"I accounted for survival," he calmly said.

Lilith had expected some sort of denial, apology, or just anything but his eyes held no guilt.

Her fingers curled on her side.

"The antidote," she said," the suppressants."

Atheline fell back on the bed.

"It was all secured in advance."

Lilith rubbed the bridge of her nose in frustration as she looked down at his calm face while he confessed.

"You used my authority," she said evenly.

"Yes," he answered without any hesitation.

"How did you...haa.. let’s forget about that for now."

That was another of his crimes piling up. It was also hard to find fault in him when the first thing he did when he woke up was to confess.

’He must not have wanted me to feel guilty for not protecting him , how sweet, he really knows me the most’

Lilith shook her distracting thoughts away, she couldn’t let him off with no consequences.

"Explain," she coldly said.

Lilith crossed her arms and looked down at him her face serious.

Atheline shifted slightly against the pillow, the movement sending a shot of pain through his body.

Lilith started to lean towards him but stopped. She was still angry.

"I needed to go with you," he quietly said," I don’t really care what method I use as long as I’m with you."

Lilith’s heart skipped a beat, how could it not? The words were like a balm on an open wound. But those words alone won’t justify the danger he had put himself into.

"Why can’t you just listen to me when I tell you something, " she said flatly.

His lips curved just a little.

"You’re not the only one who worries, Lily," he said quietly," the journey towards the third kingdom is unstable and you yourself don’t even know what might happen in those islands. To top it off, political access is uncertain."

Atheline paused to catch his breath. His heart rang against his chest too fast.

Lilith sighed and sat on the bed again.

"The problem is you were going to go there regardless," his hand touched hers," and without adequate support."

Lilith was silent for a moment as they stared at each other. She leaned closer, touched his neck softly but her expression didn’t change.

"So you thought the best thing was to poison yourself," she said flatly," to become a necessity."

Atheline nodded.

"That would be correct," he answered honestly without a change in expression.
