Chapter 92: 92:Poison.

Zelpher glanced at the nobles then back to Lilith. She raised an eyebrow in question.

"Well, is something wrong?" She calmly asked.

Zelpher sighed inwardly.

"I required a personal audience your majesty," he respectfully said.

Nobles as usual started to whisper while they looked around, each speculating what was going to be said but most, hoped this would be a respite from all the madness.

Lilith stood immediately. Anything that involved her beloved was of utmost importance to her.

"The hall remains sealed," she said with a steady voice," no one leaves until I say so."

A collective tension snapped back into place, their hopes crashed under her words.

Some of the nobles opened their mouths to protest but she continued before they could even say anything.

"Further questioning will continue in intervals. Any attempts to restrict this investigation will be treated as direct treason."

No one dared to oppose her. The consequences were nothing one would want to be associated with especially with how she treated those accused of treason.

Even the older elves who had already been questioned didn’t lift a finger or voice.

With the threat having settled in place, Lilith walked down the dias her clinking heels echoing around the hall.

They watched as her back disappeared behind the closed doors following behind was Zelpher.

Most of them let out a deep sigh of relief the moment the door closed.

Disaster averted.

The walk to her office was quiet with guards and servants stepping out of their way.

Lilith settled in her seat and leaned forward in anticipation.

"Tell me," she commanded.

Zelpeher nodded.

"The poison has been identified your majesty," he replied calmly.

Lilith was in front of Zelpher before her chair hit the ground.

"What is it?"

The urgency in her voice forced him to take a small step back. Lilith noticed but didn’t step forward.

"It does not originate from within our territories, " he continued," or from any of our allied forces."

She didn’t interrupt him despite knowing what was being said.

"Where is it from then... get to the point Zelpher!" She sighed impatiently.

"It’s from the third kingdom," he said his words ending in a whisper.

Lilith felt like laughing.

’What a coincidence’

"That is quite a distance," she ironically said, "to go to the coastal territory for poison, isn’t it a bit too much?"

The third kingdom was a coastal kingdom and the smallest among the three human kingdoms.

It occupied most of the southern sea and was mainly a favorite fishing area since it occupied the side with the largest fish capacity.

Zelpher could only respond with a nod.

"Continue..."

She rubbed the bridge of her nose, trying to get rid of the mounting suspicion and frustrations.

’He wouldn’t do this.’

"As you already know from the healers... anyone who would use such poison had to have planned it too well knowing its requirements for activation."

Lilith nodded. The fact that her wine was the trigger still bugged her a lot.

"The healers are suppressing its spread but it seems it won’t last long," Lilith confessed then added," Have you found the antidote?"

Zelpher’s fingers curled behind his back as he debated how to deliver the news. He tilted his head slightly then answered.

"There is no known antidote prepared or found within our lands."

Lilith’s eyes widened. Despite the healer’s words she had still held hope but it seems she was unlucky.

She could feel her breath caught in her chest but it wouldn’t move. She held it within herself and returned her attention to the conversations before he would notice.

"Is there really no cure?"

"Not locally," he carefully corrected, "it is believed that the necessary ingredients exist within the third kingdom ecosystems. However, the confirmation is still ongoing to authenticate the validity of our information. "

Lilith stared at him for a second before she turned back to her desk. She looked so small, almost tired.

She had been up the whole night. This was something she was used to but this kind of stress was eating away at her..

"I see," she answered in resignation then added, "Is that all?"

Zelpher shook his head prompting Lilith to look at him. She leaned forward her hands clasped together and the sound of her heart in her ears.

"We found an alternative to the antidote," he said his voice low.

Lilith fought the urge to stand up. Her right leg tapped the floor quietly as anticipation climbed.

"Continue."

"It can suppress the poison entirely after administering it. A suppressant to put it simply"

Her fingers tightened against the edge of the table

"How long?"

"Those can last only a few days," he said," at most, it can only go for a week if the body has a strong endurance."

A small sigh of relief left her. She was a little happy that Atheline could finally escape his pain, that is, if they could find the pseudo-antidote.

"Explain."

His voice cut through her small relief but she didn’t lift her gaze to him.

"Though it will not remove the poison," he said quietly," the delay after its administration would be long enough for you to reach the.... source."

That caught her full attention. If the suppressant was already available then things could be saved.

"Continue.."

Lilith felt her heart skip. She just hoped the pseudo-antidote was at least available.

Lilith nodded in encouragement.

"It is derived from the same marine flora as the full antidote," he explained," unlike the real antidote that degrades after leaving the water for some time, this one can be transported and remains stable, but the quantities are limited."

"Is it available here?"

He inclined his head slightly.

"There is only a small quantity available through trade channels," he said," it should hopefully be enough to get you through the journey."

Zelpher wanted to add something, but decided not to, he wanted to make sure his confirmations were accurate.

Lilith was quiet for a moment then she spoke.

"Prepare both," she said in a low voice," the route and the first dose."

"Yes, your majesty. "

Zelpher nodded. Lilith waved him off.

"I do not want any delays," she said," I want him to receive it upon preparation."

Lilith dismissed him but Zelpher didn’t leave as expected. He remained standing with his hands behind his back. This was something he had never done upon dismissal.

"... is there anything you would like to add?" She calmly said.

From his face, there had to be something else that was disturbing him.

"It’s about the second antidote," he calmly said," there seems to be some inconsistencies around it."

That got her attention. She frowned towards him.

"Inconsistencies?" She repeated.

Zelpher nodded.

"Something doesn’t add up properly about the information regarding it," he calmly said.

Lilith sat straighter and crossed her legs.

"What of it?"

He hesitated.

"It reached us too quickly."

Zelpher had only been gone for less than a night and he simply came back fully informed.

Lilith knew he was competent, so it never struck her as weird.
