Chapter 89: 89:Suspicion

Lilith didn’t have the time to think about who had done it. At the moment, her mind was on getting him out of the banquet and starting his treatment immediately.

Shadows covered them under the gaze of the still shocked nobles and she vanished leaving an unsettled group behind.

Who did it?

Was it you?

What’s going to happen next?

Should we leave?

Those were the thoughts mixed in with conversations that dominated the hall.

Harsh whispers were everywhere, but they reduced when the door was opened and more guards poured in to their surprised gazes.

A daring noble stood up in a feat of liquid courage but it wasn’t long-lived, the doors were locked shut before them.

Giah stood at the door, her massive sword held on her shoulders as she looked down at the nobles a smirk on her lips.

She was the Queen’s most trusted among the generals and a bloody maniac at that so not everybody was ready to challenge her especially with little to no weaponry.

But there will never miss fools in a sound group.

"I would like to le..." a noble seated at the middle tables hidden behind others started but he was cut off.

"Her majesty would appreciate it if you could stay and enjoy the ceremony, " Zelpher who had walked in before the doors closed said his voice heard by everyone in the room.

Some tried to complain but it fell on deaf ears but most of them continued their endeavours since they had nothing to lose.

The noble elder and the general walked to Zelpher’s side each with questions and worry in their eyes.

"How is his highness?" The elder noble asked.

He wasn’t worried about Atheline but the implications of it. He had been the one who had approved of the marriage due to the benefits it brought.

He was already enjoying them.

"Her majesty has requested healers," Zelpher answered vaguely.

"This is really a disaster, if the elven kingdom finds out," the general, Thulem, said almost resigned.

Zelpher also agreed though he didn’t show it.

’You’re worried about the elf kingdom, I’m worried about her majesty’s reactions themselves.’

Back in their bedroom Lilith materialised near the bed and carefully placed Atheline’s slack body on it.

"Out!"

Servants who had rushed in the moment she materialised froze at her commanding voice.

They quickly pulled the curtain aside, brought anything the healers might need, cleared the space, and vanished in under two minutes.

The door shut behind them with a heavy finality.

Outside the sky was littered with stars but the moon wasn’t present, the room dimmed even further as though sensing Lilith’s sour mood.

Her concentration was fully on Atheline. She leaned closer to him and placed her ear on his chest.

The thump of his heart didn’t give her the reassurance she needed, but made her fear even worse.

It was slow, too slow and it felt as though it was going to stop at any minute with each beat.

She instinctively released her Aether into his body and sat beside him.

Her free hand roamed over his body, touching to make sure she wasn’t in a bad dream.

Lilith felt the strength eventually leave her. She had never felt this helpless even after Atheline’s first suicidal attempt.

’I just hope it’s not that again’

She closed her eyes for a second and listened to the frantic footsteps approaching from outside.

"Healers," the words left her quietly but they still carried the usual weight.

They were already outside the door, summoned by Zelpher the moment Atheline fell.

Three of them stumbled in. Their robes were hastily worn and their breaths unsteady as they bowed before her at the foot of the bed.

"My queen..." the oldest of the three started.

"Stabilise him..."

She commanded cutting them off before they could even continue.

She then added more softly.

"Whatever it takes."

The healers nodded.

"Yes your majesty," they answered in synchrony.

They moved without another word, surrounding the bed. Two on one side and the older one was next to Lilith, who had stood up at some point to give them better access.

Healers were plant aether manipulators, a rare element among all types of Aether but still present.

Plant aether is a living branch of elemental control, drawn from the World Tree itself.

A gift, that’s what they all call it.

Those who wield it don’t just command growth, they channel life which makes them natural healers.

Aether gathered almost immediately, soft light green at first then darkened as it sank into Atheline’s skin.

One healer held his wrist channeling it through his pulse, another hovered above the heart as they prevented it from further damage and stabilised its beat.

The last one went to his stomach area as he channeled his aether through his failing internal organs.

The injuries were more extensive than they had thought. They could feel the damage and leaking vessels inside his body, a dangerous position to be in.

Although Atheline’s body was healing itself and the poison resistance he had trained in was helping him to control it, the poison was still too much for his body.

They spoke quietly as they assessed.

"... His pulse is irregular."

".. his breathing is suppressed, blood is flowing into his lungs..."

"Temperature fluctuating.."

Lilith’s face went darker and darker with each word from the healers who seemed to have forgotten she was there.

"Fix it!"

Tension filled the air after her outburst. Healers intensified their actions as their aether started to do its work.

Closing down the broken or torn parts.

In this process, the third healer, the youngest of the three frowned.

His aether flowed into Atheline’s blood just to confirm and he looked up at the other two who had the same expressions.

"Your majesty..." he started cautiously, " ... there... There is something in his system."

Lilith raised an eyebrow in frustration.

"Isn’t that obvious, " she snapped in irritation," I know he’s poisoned all I need is for you to cure him."

The healer’s hands clenched but he didn’t break eye contact with her despite the outburst.

"It’s.. a foreign substance."

The words hung in the air as Lilith absorbed the unexpected news.

"Foreign?" She repeated.

She had not expected that and had been caught off guard.

"Yes," the healer answered in a measured tone.

Her brows furrowed.

"From the banquet?" She asked.

The healer didn’t answer immediately since he himself didn’t know. 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

".... uncertain."

Lilith’s stare could have burned through his skull and into the others who were still healing Atheline but also listening to the conversations.

"Uncertain," she repeated flatly.

She was still in shock. Things were getting more and more complicated than she had first imagined.
