Chapter 78: 78:Saintess

The throne room was quieter than usual the common arguing and talking of ministers or the council that always made it lively.

Dark elves soldiers, lining the walls stood like poles unmoving as their eyes scanned the room.

At the centre of the throne sat Lilith. She had her legs crossed while her finger tapped on her chair almost impatiently as she looked at the door.

A step below her stood Atheline. Though he was considered her husband and had the highest authority just below her on paper, he had yet to be crowned.

Atheline returned his attention to her from the door and a small smile flashed before he went back to being serious.

Except for the guards, they were the only ones present in the throne room.

"She’s late," she said quietly but her voice echoed in the room.

Atheline glanced at the door.

"She should be here soon," he said.

His words came true a few moments later, and the great door was pushed open.

The saintess walked in respectfully while keeping her gaze on the ground. She was dressed in white robes with black lines at the hem.

Her face carried the natural fearfulness every dark elf had towards their queen. She came to a stop a few steps from the stairs and bowed deeply her white hair spilling to the side.

"Your majesty," she called after lifting her head and meeting Lilith’s eyes.

Lilith’s smile widened for a fraction before she returned to her serious self.

"Saintess," she replied," I thought you had changed your allegiance and joined the blue bloods."

A chuckle escaped her. This forced the saintess, Yander, to let out a nervous cough covered in a small forced laugh.

Yander’s eyes flickered to Atheline. She also bowed towards him though only a small one but respectful nonetheless.

"Your highness. "

Atheline smiled but didn’t respond. Lilith was glaring at him every time he looked at her.

"Congratulations on finding your court, your majesty, " Yander said, almost cheerfully.

Lilth smiled and nodded. The tension in the throne room eased just a bit after the compliment.

"Thank you."

"As promised your majesty, the goddess has fulfilled her side of the deal," Yander said confidently.

The awkwardness she carried when she spoke vanished and what replaced it was the confidence a saintess should carry.

"Speak. "

Yander linked her hands before her and faced Lilith, though the small trembling could not be hidden.

She reached into her sleeve and drew out something small.

It was a piece of paper folded over and over again but the messy cut lines showed it had just been roughly pulled out.

"The goddess has kept her promise," she repeated," the path to the moon crystals has been revealed. "

Atheline perked up while Lilith leaned back on her chair but the interest in her eyes could not be hidden.

"Where?" She asked.

Yander didn’t hand over the paper at hand immediately instead she raised her open hand and then folded two fingers.

She then looked directly at Lilith.

"There are three," she said," not one."

That got Atheline to fidget a little. Moon crystals were just as important to the elf as sunfire crystals were to them.

They were a sort of pure converted aether that had crystallized over millions of years, if not thousands.

"And.."

"They are hidden separately," she said mysteriously," each of the locations has its own protections and dangers."

An amused laugh escaped Lilith.

"Nothing worth having is ever easy to get."

Yander didn’t smile, her face grew paler as she fell quiet then she spoke.

"The first one lies beneath the Shifting islands," she continued," it’s a group of islands that shift with the ocean currents each season. It does not stay in one location every year and no one knows its exact location."

Atheline frowned, "Doesn’t that fall under living domains?"

Living domains were those places, mostly ruins left behind by those manipulators from the past. They are classified as living because they have severe effects unlike normal ruins which you can just enter.

"Yes, it is a living domain," the saintess replied, " I’m not really sure of its effect but from the name, it does not sound good."

The room went silent as each of them fell into deep thought. While living domains carry a lot of treasures, they are also the most dangerous and are not easy to locate.

Since he was born he has only heard of one found at the outskirts of the kingdom and a lot of elves had not returned.

"And the crystals?" Lilith asked.

"At the heart of the main island, " Yander replied," I’m not really sure what guards the islands."

The uncertainty of everything was almost overwhelming for Atheline. This was basically going in blind.

"Give it to me," Lilith said and extended her arm towards Yander.

Atheline didn’t wait for the guards to move. He was down the five steps and took the paper from Yander’s hand.

He slowly walked up and handed the paper to Lilith.

"You’re so sweet," she shamelessly said," thank you."

Atheline chuckled.

"You’re welcome."

She opened the small paper eyes scanning it before dark flames encompassed it.

Atheline was silent he had already glimpsed what was inside before giving it to her.

Coordinates.

What was written in the paper were Coordinates to the islands.

"The second and third," Lilith asked Yander.

"They will reveal themselves once the first is taken," Yander said," that is the condition the goddess set."

Atheline’s heart skipped a beat. Of course, it was never going to be so simple.

’If Lilith had planned to kill her new husband immediately after getting the location, it seems the undisclosed location of the two made her drag the marriage along’

Lilith placed her chin on her hand and looked down at Yander, who started to fidget again.

"You’ve done your part," she said her voice cold," so tell me, saintess..."

Her gaze became sharp as though looking into her soul.

"Why does it look like you’re warning me?"

Yander avoided her eyes. She tried to look everywhere but at Lilith, who was staring holes into her face.

"Because the goddess did not say you would survive claiming them," she answered honestly.

There was a quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Everyone and everything held their breath, their gazes directed towards Lilith.

Lilith smiled as though pleased by the notion.

"Good," she said softly.

Her fingers curled slightly on the edge of the throne grazing against the skulls.

"I was beginning to think this would be boring."

Atheline let out a quiet breath, half amused and half resigned.

"Of course you’d say that."

Her gaze flickered towards him, the previous coldness replaced with warmth.

"Would you rather I not go?" She asked.

Atheline knew it wasn’t really a question but he answered anyway.

"I’d like to watch you win," he said.

Her smile widened and Atheline was sure that if she wasn’t trying to maintain decorum she would have been on him stripping him.

Yander watched all that in silence then she coughed catching their attention.

"My part is done," she said," what you do next is yours."

"Of course, " Lilith answered almost dismissively and turned her attention back to Atheline.

Yander paused and glanced up at the flirting couple.

"...My queen, be careful, " she added almost like an afterthought.

Neither of them responded to her. Two guards stepped forward and escorted her out.

The moment she stepped out Atheline covered the distance between them and leaned against her throne his face a mask of seriousness.

"What do you take from everything she said?"
