Chapter 34: Unwanted Attention

The Naming Ceremony started not too long after.

It was a boring event mostly filled with noble formalities and speeches.

As a member of one of the Six Noble Families, Richard had his own exclusive table, which he only shared with Neia. The two of them seemed like a small droplet of water in a huge vase, considering the space they had to themselves.

Other Families had an average of three aides, but he was the only one who brought a single one.

Richard felt like the odd one out, and he blamed his parents.

They hadn’t given him any specific instructions regarding this event, and they simply told him not to stand out.

That was why he chose to be frugal and only have Neia come with him.

Apparently, it ended up having the opposite effect.

’Urgh... So many eyes are on me!’

Richard felt suffocated by the constant stares he received from different people.

Whether they belonged to different Noble Families or Independent Factions, the number of stares was simply astounding. He couldn’t help but feel like they were evaluating him somehow.

He wanted to distract himself by making conversation with Neia, but couldn’t.

Due to the current circumstances and difference in status, it would not make much sense for him to do so. Restricted by this barrier, he couldn’t help but endure.

’I shouldn’t be too surprised by this, though. Neia already told me that the Household representatives were interested in me, although I don’t know why.’ He sighed to himself, closing his eyes to think as hard as he could.

Nothing came to mind, though.

How could it?

Richard didn’t know about Arthur’s beef with him, which involved his current fiancée.

He also wasn’t aware of the Noir Family’s misunderstanding and how the Head of the Noir Household had told his second youngest daughter to keep a close eye on him.

As for the Vert and Jaune Families, they had an alliance and thus shared information.

There were also many rumors that they were close to the Holy Order.

These weren’t unfounded rumors.

Because of their relationship with the church, they could ask for a few favors every year.

One of such favors was knowing Richard’s Principal Disposition.

The record was difficult to find since Richard had gone undercover to the Awakening Ritual, but they eventually found a link—the same person who helped Richard reach the front of the line back then.

—Rapolski, the priest!

He told them everything they wanted to know for a sizable reward and a promised appointment in their Noble Family.

Thus, they knew everything about Richard—including the nature of his Principal Disposition.

So why were these two families interested in him?

Hehe... The answer was simple.

’Humiliate him!’

’Expose him to everyone else!’

They planned to use this Naming Ceremony to show just how weak this person was, and how pathetic the Blanc Household’s sole heir was.

Everyone already knew that the Blanc Family’s heir didn’t awaken a mighty Principal Disposition, and that the lad was unremarkable. However, the true identity of his Principal Disposition remained a secret.

This caused a few, like the Noir Family Head, to speculate that this was some scheme intentionally set in place by the Blanc Family.

Once the Vert and Jaune Families exposed Richard for who he really was, there would no longer be any doubts regarding his capabilities. Everyone would see him for the fraud he really was, and the reputation of the Blanc Family would forever be tarnished.

They had everything all planned out, and soon... they would have their opportunity.

As for the other guests and their interest in Richard, it was simply due to how odd his circumstances were. Not only was he not as attractive as the other Nobles, but they had also heard many rumors regarding his situation.

He even attended the event with only one aide, causing them to speculate even further.

In the end, he was the Noble who received the most attention from everyone present.

Thus, it became like this.

Each person who observed Richard had their own reasons for doing so.

However, the boy himself had no clue.

’How strange...’ Richard focused his gaze on someone seated silently among his five aides.

He had almost no reaction and appeared empty.

Arthur Netora Re Von Bleu!

His previously animated expression was nowhere to be found. He wasn’t even shooting Richard any murderous glares or prideful looks.

Instead, his face was white as a sheet, and he was completely silent.

It almost looked like he was recovering from an intense experience—one that shut down all reaction to the outside world. Richard was a little curious about this sudden switch in personality, but he didn’t have the time to dwell on that when he suddenly felt a presence next to him.

He hurriedly glanced at the person there and found the same Rouge Noble from earlier.

’Where did he pop out from?!’ Richard shuddered in wonder.

Even Neia was stunned by his presence.

This mysterious man... Just who was he and what was he up to?

After their brief confrontation back then, Richard had prudently found a way to excuse himself and his aide from any further conversation.

That was how they were able to walk away from the situation.

On their way, Richard had been asked by his aide how he was able to discern that the Rouge Noble was under some kind of disguise.

Back then, he had simply smiled confidently and said it was obvious to him.

His aide did not doubt it at all.

After all, they knew of Richard’s identity and powers well.

"He’s likely a fraud trying to gatecrash, or maybe he has some hidden motive for pretending to be a Rouge Noble when he isn’t. Regardless, he is very dangerous and unpredictable. We must avoid him no matter what." That was what Richard had said back then.

The situation was very delicate.

Richard knew he could not win against the man.

The stench of blood and death he was emanating was simply too overpowering.

That was precisely why he had to bring up his impostor identity.

It was clear that this fellow had some hidden motive, which was why he disguised himself as a Rouge Noble. In that case, if he were threatened with it, he would be forced to behave himself and let them off.

Especially if both sides agreed to stay out of the other’s business.

Richard didn’t care what this person’s motive was.

As long as it wasn’t related to the Blanc Family and his own mission, he couldn’t care less.

All he wanted was to fulfill his duty in this Ceremony and return home with his aide.

Yet...

... This man had come to find him.

’Could it be that he is no longer threatened by me? He, no... this is definitely a woman... Does she not care about being exposed as a pretender?"

Impersonating a Noble was a serious offense, which was why Richard was sure this person wouldn’t dare act out too much—especially in this event.

So what changed?

He didn’t know, which was why he had no choice but to ask the question:

"What are you doing here?"
