I Married the President-Chapter 78: Work Hard
Claire Sinclair resignedly carried her things to a desk in the farthest corner. She glanced at the computer and saw it was even more rundown than her previous one.
’I’ll just bring my own laptop tomorrow. I really can’t get used to the computers here.’
Just as she was lost in thought, Phoebe Lockwood came over holding a cup. The water cooler was right next to her, so Phoebe was just getting some water.
While filling her cup, Phoebe Lockwood tilted her head back, staring smugly at Claire Sinclair with a triumphant grin. "Claire Sinclair, how are you settling into your new position? I hear it requires a lot of overtime."
Claire Sinclair forced a smile. "Thanks to you, I’m just wonderful."
"Heh. I’m sure things will only get better for you. Keep up the good work."
With that, Phoebe Lockwood took her cup of water and walked away.
Frustrated, Claire Sinclair stared blankly at her computer screen.
Managing the company’s social media accounts sounded simple, but the actual process was incredibly tedious. The update volume was enormous; on average, she had to publish two original posts and re-share several others every half hour.
Managing the main official accounts was even worse. Each of the six major departments had its own account. After updating all six, she had to compile a summary for the main company account. It was an absolute nightmare.
By the end of the day, Claire Sinclair had barely had time to drink water. Her only break was a quick run out for noodles at lunch before she was right back at it.
And that wasn’t all. She also had to schedule content for automated overnight posts. Plus, if any breaking news occurred, she would have to wake up in the middle of the night to post about it manually.
With such a massive workload, it was no wonder the position had such a high turnover rate. No sane person could handle it. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝒆𝒘𝙚𝓫𝙣𝙤𝒗𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Claire Sinclair had only been at it for a day, and she was already overwhelmed with the urge to rebel. ’I want to quit so badly!’
But then she remembered what Teacher Hartwell had told her—"find joy in it"—so she forced herself to adapt to the work.
’My sister endured so much hardship in the military and ultimately became a special forces soldier. If I give up just because work is a little tiring, what does that make me but a total waste?’
’So, I can’t give up. The harder you work, the luckier you get. My efforts will definitely pay off in the end!’
Just as she was getting lost in her thoughts, Henry Hartwell suddenly appeared before her, a backpack slung over his shoulder. He looked at her apologetically and said, "Claire Sinclair, the higher-ups are sending me to the City J branch to cover a local festival. You’ll have to manage on your own for now, but do a good job. Wait for me to come back."
Claire Sinclair raised an eyebrow. ’City J... Isn’t that a small city in the Southern Region? It’s ages away from Aethelgard; the flight alone takes half a day...’
"Teacher Hartwell, how long will you be gone?"
"Probably about a month. Call me if you need anything."
"Okay."
"Do a good job, alright? And make sure you wait for me to get back. I’m about to miss my flight, so I’ve got to run..."
Claire Sinclair blinked innocently as she watched the slightly heavyset man’s retreating figure.
’If I’m understanding this correctly... was Teacher Hartwell just demoted?’
’Going from The Aethelgard Headquarters to a regional branch... how many ranks down is that?’
’Wait a second...’
’With Teacher Hartwell gone, what am I supposed to do?’
...
For the next two weeks, Claire Sinclair’s life was a blur of overtime and sleepless nights. She was busy, but her days felt fulfilling. The only thing was, she had lost a little weight without even noticing.
Staring at the veins now prominent on the back of her hand, her mind inevitably drifted elsewhere.
’It’s already been two weeks...’
’Ever since she’d kicked him out, Adrian Quincy hadn’t come home once.’
’Is he really that busy?’
’Then again, maybe so. I’ve been working like a dog this whole time. As the master of Quincy Manor, he’s surely even busier than I am.’
’He had even mentioned wanting me to join him, in my capacity as a reporter, for his meeting with President Helmanro.’
’It’s such a shame. I won’t get the chance to be there for the exclusive interview. My supervisor put me on duty at the office instead.’
’Sigh. The opportunity is lost.’
