Chapter 108: Chapter 108: Hot-Blooded Man

The man suddenly dipped his head and pecked her on the lips. Then, he straightened up and casually walked past her as if nothing had happened.

Claire stood frozen in place, her mind completely blank.

’It seemed... he had just flirted with me...’

...

「That night.」

After her shower, Claire flopped onto the bed, too lazy to move an inch.

Suddenly, she heard footsteps outside her door. Claire felt a twinge of nervousness and turned her head toward the entrance. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

’Adrian Quincy is staying over tonight. He wouldn’t come into my room, would he?’

’I remember how he’d accused me of seducing him with such disgust at first, and now...’

’No, I’m too tired tonight. I can’t let him in. Otherwise, with a man and a woman alone in a room, something is bound to happen.’

Claire scrambled out of bed and scurried to the door.

Just as she was about to bolt the door, the man’s low, captivating voice came from outside. "Claire, are you asleep?"

"I’m asleep!" Claire answered through the door.

"Something urgent’s come up, and I have to head out. I won’t be back tonight. I’ll come get you tomorrow."

As he spoke the last word, Claire couldn’t resist opening the door.

The man stood at her door dressed in a white military uniform, a matching service cap tucked under his right arm. His expression was solemn, his dark eyes veiled with an unreadable emotion.

Claire’s heart skipped a beat for no reason. "It’s so late," she said urgently. "What happened?"

Adrian Quincy said nothing. He simply reached out, pulled her slender frame into his arms, and buried his face in the crook of her neck.

She could sense an aura of sorrow emanating from him.

"Claire, in this land where we live, brave soldiers like your sister make the ultimate sacrifice every day. I need you to remember that. Never dishonor the blood of heroes. Only then will you be worthy of being my wife."

"Uh..." Claire was stunned for a moment. It felt as if his words had awakened the very blood in her veins, making it burn with a fiery heat.

’So this is what burning passion feels like, isn’t it?’

Adrian Quincy gently let her go. He raised a warm hand to caress her face, then slowly pressed his lips to hers.

After a brief kiss, the man turned resolutely and left without a single glance back.

Claire stared blankly at his retreating figure. The tenderness of his kiss seemed to linger on her lips as a growing sense of loss filled her heart.

’So that’s the kind of passion that flows through his veins. A man of honor, dedicated to his home and country... That’s his great ambition. It looks like I’ll have to work harder, too.’

’I’ll use my pen to carve out a domain of righteous public opinion for him.’

...

「The next morning.」

Claire got up early and, out of habit, picked up her phone to browse the morning news.

The moment she opened the Astoria Daily app, a striking headline caught her eye: "Heroes, Rest in Peace."

She clicked on it. A disaster relief team had been caught in a landslide while working in the affected area. All twelve members were buried alive and had perished.

Just before the tragedy, these twelve heroes had finished evacuating a nearby village to safety...

’No wonder Adrian left in such a hurry last night,’ she thought. ’So that’s what happened.’

’Damn it. If only I’d been a little quicker, I would have seen the sorrow in his eyes. I could have comforted him, but I did nothing at all.’

After something like this, how could she possibly be in the mood to go shopping?

She set her phone down and took her laptop out of a locked cabinet.

After booting it up, the same invitation page popped up again.

System Prompt: Join us?

This time, Claire didn’t close the window. Instead, she typed out a string of code, followed by two words: Fuck off.
