Chapter 25: The Worst List Possible

Even though it was already evening, both Eren and Emily walked toward the village center with impatient steps. They passed the restaurant that looked like the cafe where they always ate, then sat on the bench beside a small pool of water further ahead.

There was a strange anxiety on Emily’s face. "I think if it gives you some stupid limit, we should do a full reset and start over. My stepfather was normally a gardener. But when I was a child, he prayed to the village totem and reset his class and profession. Then he obtained the Hunter profession."

Eren had listened to the elf girl’s example countless times before. "But that was a very exceptional situation. You were a child, and your mother, the real hunter, had died. The village needed someone to protect it. That kind of necessity doesn’t exist right now."

Emily nodded in agreement.

"I hope you get a proper combat class without any of what I said being necessary. Or a good crafting class would work too."

Eren felt the people in the village square watching him from a distance, and he could feel some judgmental looks on his skin. He started to feel the same way he had during those stressful years when he’d been drowning in job applications for the first time.

If he was lucky enough, or deemed suitable, he could obtain something good. For a moment, he remembered the system text about being descended from an old monarch and shoved the stress aside.

"Even in a magical world, I can’t escape the luck factor."

Otherwise, professions like Tree Care Master or Jewelry Designer would limit his future far too much.

Still, after what the wolf pups had done a few hours ago, he also knew there were different ways to obtain a skill. With suspicion, he raised his hand and slid it into the leaves of the tiny pine tree.

The instant his hand touched one of the branches, he felt something flow out of him. It was as if, beneath the clothes he was wearing that belonged to Emily’s stepfather, a very faint air licked his entire body and released itself out through his feet.

[Congratulations, Child of Earth. You have earned the right to have a Unique Class]

"You still keep saying "congratulations". I think you use that word on purpose to ease us to not curse you, System Lady Evon."

[Classes are generated in specific or random forms and options depending of the life forms]

[10%....50%....100% - Finished!

Congratulations! Four different unique classes are being generated.]

[This list disappears when you make your selection or close it without making a selection. Your right to unique professions will be lost after closing this selection screen!]

As he feared, it wasn’t a standard class, and probably because he’d come from Earth, he had four different unique classes to choose from.

[Selectable Unique Classes; Almost a Beggar, Magician of Love, Spear Catcher, Negotiator]

Eren thought there was no way all of them would suck. But not seeing a name like a necromancer or a tamer was concerning.

This was the the worst list possible! He read the list a second time more carefully. And that’s when he wanted to stab himself in anger.

"What is there a beggar class anyway?"

"Oh sorry, you added "ALMOST" before it!"

"Almost a beggar!!!"

Eren wanted to curse the system in rage. It would be nice to be able to at least think about it for a few days. But he had to choose if he didn’t want to deal with a random normal class.

He knew he was too emotional with big expectations. But his body was exhausted from hours of hunting or running around in the forest. He couldn’t make a proper choice with being this tense. But the system cornered Eren, demanding he decide immediately.

Seeing Emily smile as she waved at him calmed him down a little bit.

Eren leaned back against the tiny tree. This decision would affect many things, both short-term and long-term.

First, he would eliminate that stupid "spear catcher" class. No matter how much he stretches the name, it didn’t look like going anywhere good. He didn’t even like baseball enough to have a basic idea about catching things.

Secondly, "System, can I get information about these classes?"

[These unique classes are freshly generated random ones and they aren’t registered in the Evon System yet.

You can’t receive information until you choose and register your class in the system for evaluation]

"Fantastic!"

Thinking that Eren had a problem, Emily approached him. "Is there a problem?"

Emily had a hard time not laughing when Eren told her what happened. "I think you should choose the one whose name looks the strongest.

Aren’t you already very lucky? You are several times luckier than a normal person. Whatever you choose will be the best, probably..."

Eren hadn’t even thought about it until she said it.

[Luck: 26]

He could use that.

Eren actually didn’t need to think too much. The Negotiator was probably a class about commerce and persuading other creatures. Such a class was unnecessary unless he was considering becoming a politician in the future.

"Sorry, man, you look like a class with the potential to offer me a good life. But not enough."

Almost a Beggar was weird. And as soon as he started to think about what this class might be, he gave up. He refused to choose anything that had "beggar" in it.

After all the thinking, he chose the class he had already decided on when he first saw the list.

"I’m choosing the Magician of Love class. I hope it includes normal spells that have nothing to do with love. For example, a big nova explosion that turns everyone to stone would be nice. If I had a talent like Medusa, I could turn the jungle upside down...

Also my class name includes the word "magician" so fireballs are appreciated..

And system lady Evon, please add flying and some meteor spells as well. Maybe a tsunam-"

[Do you confirm of your choice of Unique Class?]

"Yes."

[Congratulations! You have become the Magician of "Love", the most powerful of all feelings. All active and passive spells belonging to your class have been added to your "skills" page.]

Eren begged the Evon to give him normal magic spells or some strange abilities like Medusa had.

But as soon as he saw the skill sheet, he wanted to punch something.

Eren would never know for the rest of his life how powerful the "Almost a Beggar" class really was. He missed something incredible.
