I Faked My Death—Now I Have to Tame the Crazy Men I Left Behind-Chapter 58 - 56: Mia Grant, Don’t Get Full of Yourself
As she fell back, Mia Grant raised her hand and slapped Yates Donovan across the face.
The man’s movements stopped, and an eerie silence descended.
Yates Donovan looked up at her, his eyes filled with disbelief.
He never thought she’d actually have the nerve.
Then again, it was less of a slap and more of a light smack; it didn’t have much force behind it.
But it had, undeniably, landed on his face.
For any man, that would be a serious blow to his pride.
But Yates Donovan was only stunned for a second. The fading fire in his eyes suddenly had fuel thrown on it, and it flickered before roaring back to life.
Mia Grant froze. ’Wait... did he *enjoy* that???’
He seized the hand still resting on his face, gripping it tightly.
Yates Donovan’s chest rumbled with laughter.
A tremor shot through Mia Grant’s entire nervous system.
She was suddenly filled with regret.
"If you’ve got this much fight in you, why don’t you try kicking Silas Grant a few times?"
"He’s my brother. You’re different. If you try to pull a stunt like that on me again, I’ll do more than just hit you."
"Ohh," Yates Donovan said, as if in realization. "So it’s okay for your brothers to get fresh with you, but your fiancé can’t."
Mia Grant kicked him again. "If you can get him arrested, I’ll support you!"
"You’d have the heart to send your ’other man’ to prison?"
"I wasn’t talking about Hayes Hughes."
"Talk about a double standard."
"Besides, my second brother didn’t do anything to me anyway."
"Really? Then why was Silas Grant so furious?"
"..." Mia Grant was speechless. ’I’d like to know that too!’
"Fine, if you won’t talk, it doesn’t matter. I can wait for Hayes Hughes to wake up."
"It’ll be the same if you ask him."
Mia Grant sat up straight and turned her head, pointedly ignoring the psycho.
"Trying to bait me is useless." Yates Donovan didn’t try to coax her, simply continuing to eat.
’Playing hard to get.’
Too bad for her, he was a seasoned veteran. He’d seen all the little tricks girls play.
"You might as well save your energy. You’d be better off begging me than asking Hayes Hughes. He doesn’t know much."
Mia Grant stood up.
Yates Donovan paused, his gaze following her.
Her long hair swayed beautifully at her waist with every step.
The sight momentarily mesmerized him. Snapping out of it, he quickly asked, "Where are you going? Are you coming back for dinner?"
"To find Kian Keller."
"If you won’t tell me, plenty of other people will."
"..."
Yates Donovan swore under his breath. He’d almost forgotten about Kian Keller.
"Come back."
He called to her.
She didn’t break her stride and was almost at the door.
"I told you to come back..."
Yates Donovan swung his legs down, got up, and chased after her, grabbing her arm. "Such a temper."
"Getting angry at the drop of a hat."
"I don’t see you giving *them* this kind of attitude."
Mia Grant looked back over her shoulder and huffed haughtily. "None of your business. And it’s not like I’m forcing you, am I?"
"This is a two-way street. You can either tell me or not. Your choice."
Tsk.
’Now that was an infuriating thing to hear.’
Yates Donovan narrowed his eyes. He cupped her chin, his fingers tightening to pinch her cheeks. "Darling, are you getting a little too full of yourself?"
"Trying to get a hold on me? You’d better find another way."
Mia Grant’s expression was one of resignation. "Why would you say that? Don’t you find it ridiculous?"
"You saved me, and I’m grateful. Do you want me to bow to you right now?"
"But as for getting a hold on you..." Mia Grant mimicked his tone. "Are *you* getting a little too full of yourself?"
She smiled, her eyes curving into crescents. Her beaming expression looked just like the cat avatar she used for her profile picture. "Do you really think I’m short on options?"
She lowered her voice, looking up at him with innocent eyes. "You broke off the engagement, but that’s okay. There’s a line of men waiting to be my fiancé now."
"As my ex, why don’t you give me some advice? With so many to choose from, who do you think I should pick?"
"Oh, dear. They’re all so much more impressive than you. It’s giving me a headache." Mia Grant sighed, feigning a classic dilemma—of men.
"..." The look in Yates Donovan’s eyes shifted.
If anyone else had said such a thing, he would have just thought they were narcissistic.
’All talk.’
But this was Mia Grant.
Just as she said, she never lacked for suitors.
A single smile from her could stir up a storm. With just a crook of her finger, men would fall over themselves to get to her.
Weren’t Silas Grant and Hayes Hughes today’s best examples?
She was like the mastermind pulling the strings, sitting calmly in the audience and watching them fight tooth and nail just for a chance to win her.
Noticing the change in his eyes, Mia Grant was inwardly ecstatic.
After all this time, she could finally get some payback.
She hadn’t forgotten about him breaking their engagement.
’It’s just about provoking someone, right? As if I don’t know how to play that game.’
Yates Donovan smiled and lowered his hand. "You really know how to hold a grudge."
"About breaking the engagement..."
He started to say something, but Mia Grant cut him off, raising a hand. "I didn’t ask you about that."
Yates Donovan ran his tongue over his back molars, the amusement in his eyes deepening. He nodded. "Fine."
Mia Grant crossed her arms, leaned against the door, and just stared at him.
Yates Donovan stopped beating around the bush. "A little while ago, Hayes Hughes was on a business trip abroad. He was attacked by men sent by Kian Keller."
"His men blended in with a group of terrorists and stabbed Hayes Hughes. Simple as that."
Mia Grant frowned. "You told Hayes Hughes?"
"I found out later, so I told him."
"Why?" She couldn’t figure it out.
"What was your motive?"
Yates Donovan held up his hands. "Does there have to be a motive?"
Mia Grant was at a loss for words.
"Too bad. I don’t think he believed me."
Mia Grant’s mind raced. She felt like... she was missing something.
"Are you and Kian Keller good friends?"
"Hm? Is that what he told you?"
Mia Grant shook her head. "Just a guess."
She couldn’t clearly remember how their relationship was described in the original novel.
It was just a guess.
First, Kian Keller and Yates Donovan were both from Jynsia, and their families seemed to be close.
Second, Silas Grant was good friends with both Kian Keller and Yates Donovan.
Birds of a feather flock together, and all three of them were cut from the same cloth.
So logically, Kian Keller and Yates Donovan should have been friends, too.
But seeing Yates Donovan’s reaction, Mia Grant knew she’d guessed wrong.
’Then...’
"Since you aren’t close to Hayes Hughes, yet you still sold out Kian Keller... I refuse to believe you did it for no reason."
"You’re not that kind, and you’re not bored enough to do things without a motive."
"If you’re not friends, then it’s highly likely you’re enemies."
"So, the car accident Kian Keller had a while back that injured his leg..."
A flicker of realization flashed in Mia Grant’s eyes. "It was you."
At the time, she’d suspected Silas Grant, but the System had told her it was one of Kian Keller’s enemies who had been tailing his car, leading to the collision.
’Thinking about it now, Hayes Hughes fits the description of an enemy, but he wasn’t the type to do something like that.’
’So, it was probably Yates Donovan.’
Yates Donovan let out a surprised "oh," tilting his head. He looked at her with his long, narrow eyes. "Looks like you’ve gotten smarter."
"Then why don’t you guess again..." He leaned in, his breath ghosting over her ear as if he were kissing her earlobe. "...why I want him dead."
