I Faked My Death—Now I Have to Tame the Crazy Men I Left Behind-Chapter 56 - 54: She Will Obediently Beg for Mercy
"Silas." Yates Donovan stood up and called out to him.
Silas Grant turned back, the smile not reaching his eyes.
"Is there something else?"
Yates pointed out the window downstairs. "Just a friendly reminder, your parents are here."
"!" Hearing that it was her parents, Mia Grant instinctively started to struggle.
But Silas was too strong, and he gripped her hand tightly. "It’s okay, Mia. I’m here."
He pulled her into his arms and, with the same hand he had just used to beat Hayes Hughes, began to gently pat her on the back, soothing her like a child waking from a nightmare in the middle of the night.
"No, no, no!" Mia couldn’t remain calm.
Hayes Hughes lived on a low floor. Her parents would be up any second and see her!
"Brother, I don’t want... I don’t want to go back. If Mom and Dad see me, I... I..."
She was starting to hyperventilate, her words breaking into disjointed fragments, unable to express what she was trying to say.
Seeing her distress, Silas’s brow furrowed. His gaze fell on the assistant who had just come up.
Mia was still struggling, and it didn’t look like an act.
Silas held her still, his large hand stroking her back again and again.
He soothed her, "There, there. Good girl. No one is going to hurt you here. Your big brother will protect you."
Silas had his assistant take her down in a different elevator and see her home to rest.
They were gone.
Silas turned to face Yates, his expression darkening completely.
Yates raised his hands in a gesture of innocence. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
"Did you call them?"
"This time, it has nothing to do with me." Yates shrugged innocently. "I’m just a passerby."
"But Silas... you beat the guy half to death. Aren’t you going to teach *her* a lesson as well, make sure she learns from this?"
"What did she do wrong?" Silas’s lips curled as he looked down to adjust his cufflinks. "She’s just a child, momentarily dazzled by the outside world. It’s perfectly normal."
"As long as we correct it in time, it’s fine."
’She’s just a child. Even if she needs to be punished, it shouldn’t be here.’
’He’d take her somewhere no one could find them.’
’Bound and tied.’
’She’ll be begging for mercy soon enough.’
"Normal?" Yates clicked his tongue. "Are you trying to say that she just made the kind of mistake any woman would make? And that makes it forgivable?"
"She wasn’t the one who initiated it. The ones who deserve to die are those who seduced her."
"I’m not so sure about that," Yates disagreed. "The way she is with Hayes Hughes... TSK TSK TSK."
"I certainly don’t think she’s such a good girl."
"If she were so good, she wouldn’t be here today, would she? And you wouldn’t have... caught them in bed?"
"Oh, no, that’s not right." Yates tapped his forehead. "What was I thinking? How could I use a word like that?"
He grinned. "After all, you’re just brother and sister."
Silas froze, his dark eyes narrowing behind his glasses.
Yates was provoking him.
But he didn’t have time to settle the score right now, because his parents were already walking in.
Mia got into the car, and it wasn’t until they were a good distance away that her racing heart began to settle.
But before she could relax, she realized this wasn’t the road back to her school.
Her school was close to where Hayes Hughes lived, but they were now heading in the completely opposite direction.
They were most likely heading to Silas’s place.
A chill went down Mia’s spine.
She didn’t dare to imagine what would happen when she had to face Silas alone...
She had just managed to coax him into a good mood a while back, and now all that was ruined.
He was probably already planning to take her away from Jynsia again.
’Could I jump out of the car?’
Mia looked out the window, searching for a red light where she could jump out and make a run for it.
There was a red light two hundred meters ahead.
Her hand was already on the door handle, just waiting for the right moment.
The car merged into traffic and came to a stop at the intersection with the other vehicles, waiting for the light to change.
The moment the car came to a complete stop, Mia seized her chance and threw the door open—
BANG! The car lurched violently. The force of the impact threw Mia back, making her snatch her hand from the door and slam against the front passenger seat.
Luckily, she reacted quickly enough to brace herself with her hands, narrowly avoiding a face-plant.
"What happened?" she asked the driver and assistant in the front seats.
"I think we were rear-ended. Don’t worry, Miss Grant, I’ll have the driver get out and take a look," the assistant said.
After the assistant spoke, the driver got out of the car to handle it.
Two minutes later, the driver knocked on the assistant’s window, his face grim. He told the assistant to get out. "This guy’s a real piece of work. It’s not going to be easy."
"Miss Grant, please stay in the car. Don’t move. We’ll be right back."
"Okay, okay, go on," Mia nodded eagerly.
’This was perfect. Now was her chance to escape!’
Seizing the opportunity, Mia slipped out of the car. She had no idea where she was, but she saw an alleyway across the street.
She bolted into it headfirst and quickly became lost.
The alleyway was a labyrinth of twists and turns, filled with old courtyard houses. Several times, she thought she’d found an exit, only to run into someone’s private yard.
After running for a while, Mia leaned against a wall to catch her breath.
’I knew I shouldn’t have worn heels today.’
Footsteps sounded behind her, drawing closer.
A jolt went through Mia, and she broke into a run again.
She didn’t know who was behind her. Was it one of Silas’s men? Or just a passerby?
’Either way, running was the right move.’
She was wearing a trench coat, its belt cinching her waist and tied in a large bow at her back.
The man caught up to her, hooked a finger through the bow, and yanked hard.
Mia shrieked as she lost her balance and stumbled backward, landing squarely in the man’s arms.
He wrapped one arm around her waist and leaned his head over her shoulder, his tone playful. "What’s with the guilty conscience? Why are you running so fast?"
"Yates Donovan?!" Mia’s eyes widened as she turned her head to meet a pair of smiling eyes.
"What are you doing here?"
"Who else would it be? Were you expecting that half-dead Hayes Hughes to come rescue you?"
"..."
"You? Rescue me?" As if she’d heard the funniest joke in the world, Mia bent her arm and jabbed her elbow hard into his ribs.
"HSS."
Mia used the opportunity to squirm out of his grasp and put some distance between them.
Yates rubbed his side and looked up at her. "You little brat, is that any way to treat the one who saved your life?"
"So ungrateful."
"That’s not how you acted when you asked me to save your lover boy."
"..." Mia scoffed. "Weren’t you the one who told Silas I was about to run, just a minute ago?"
"You did it on purpose!"
"One second you’re giving me the signal to slip away, and the next you’re stabbing me in the back!"
"You’re the worst!"
"Pfft." Being cursed at while she pointed a finger at his nose didn’t make Yates angry at all. In fact, he burst out laughing.
"What are you laughing at?"
"What’s with you? You don’t even know how to curse properly." Yates put on a theatrical voice, mimicking her tone. "You’re the worst!"
After saying it, he couldn’t hold back another laugh.
"..." Mia frowned. ’Psycho.’
Once he’d had his laugh, his expression turned serious. "I told him that to make him lower his guard."
"You didn’t really think you could have gotten away back at Hayes Hughes’s place, did you?"
"Who do you think called his parents? And who do you think hit his car just now?"
Yates stepped forward and hooked a finger under her chin, tilting her head up. "Baby girl, it’s been a few months. How are you still as adorably naive as ever?"
