Chapter 54: Recruitment

Things quickly settled down after the group leader’s words. He was fairly high ranking, but above that, Lord Surfin had personally chosen him to be the leader of this quest.

There wasn’t anything that the other Hunters were willing to say against him.

Sin was nursed to better health--the leader giving him a healing potion from his own item pouch.

Sin was told to sit back as a few Hunters attempted to break open the dungeon.

They managed to blow a hole in the entrance after half an hour of work, and a small group entered with their guards on high alert.

Once inside, they also busted down the blocked entrance of the cave area--taking another thirty or so minutes.

Finally, everyone was very unamused to see that the place had been sucked dry.

Not a single Spirit Crystal was in the room--completely empty.

The leader of the previous Hunter group couldn’t believe his eyes.

’No... this can’t be.’ He thought to himself with his jaw hanging open slightly. ’Lord Surfin will crucify me... fuck!’

"What did I tell you!?" The female B-Rank Hunter from before expressed her irritation: "That kid is suspicious! A crime as big-scaled as this has taken place and yet he doesn’t remember any of it despite being the only possible witness!" 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

The leader sighed, "Well... I’m not going to blame him. Even if he didn’t save my life, who’s to say he was the one who committed this crime?"

"Why isn’t he at least a suspect!?" The woman exclaimed, others not choosing a side and staying out of it.

"Because he is a damn Ore Collector. A new one at that. I saw him working, and he was strong, but that still doesn’t explain how he would be able to clear this entire dungeon within one or two hours."

The leader was making a lot of sense. People didn’t dispute his words, so he continued:

"Just like you said, this is a big-scale crime... a big operation that needs several hands. While you all were breaking the main entrance open, I scanned the entire area around these ruins. Let alone crystals, there weren’t even footsteps leaving this area!"

The woman lowered her head as she heard this, thinking, ’If that’s the case... then I guess it really can’t be that kid.’

The leader finished with this: "Whoever did this was smart. It was undeniably a calculated move. We need to report it so that the authorities can handle it and not put our hands all over it like we are detectives or something..."

The woman replied: "You’re right... it’s better that way. Maybe a notorious criminal group will be captured if we don’t tamper with anything..."

With these conclusions, everyone left the dungeon.

Sin rode back into Solstar in the same carriage as he had come with, an inner grin on his face.

’This all turned out much better than I could have imagined...’ He mused, ’Now, I’ll need to quickly transport everything into the city and sell it.’

As he thought of ways to move the crystals, he arrived in Solstar before he knew it.

Right as he hopped out of the carriage, he felt a hand on his shoulder.

"Kid..." Thurfos’ voice sounded.

Sin turned to look past his shoulder, turning around after seeing who it was.

"What’s up?"

Thurfos looked both nervous but eager at the same time, "Your strength is admirable. In truth, I haven’t seen a worker like you in ages. Possibly never."

As Thurfos said this, Sin couldn’t help but notice all of the other members of the Ore Collecting team peek at the conversation from inside the carriage like teenage girls excited to hear the drama.

"I want you to join my team... officially. I will pay you what’s worth 5 workers without any objection. So... what say you?"

Sin’s eyes narrowed, ’Hmm...’ Some interesting thoughts entered his mind at that moment.

’If I join him, I can continue stealing while working as a miner. But... the ogre story will get old pretty quick. No one’s gonna believe that the same ogre keeps appearing wherever I go. Still, having a connection to Ore Collectors might not be a bad thing. It was torture moving around that product before... maybe I can use them for something like that in the future.’

"I can’t join you, I’m sorry." Sin directly stated.

The team sighed in resounding disappointment. Even Thurfos’ eager expression turned to a frown.

"I see..." The man said, accepting the loss.

"However," Sin paused, capturing everyone’s attention again, "I will be in contact with you again for undisclosed reasons."

"Oh? Undisclosed? That’s a big word." Thurfos chuckled a bit, lightening the mood.

The two exchanged full names and addresses. This way, Sin could contact the man’s household or company whenever he needed to communicate with him.

After that, Thurfos and his team left.

Sin exhaled, finally free from everything else. He was still worrying about moving the crystals. Right now, they were just out there for anyone to find or steal.

Right as he turned to leave the guild, however, he was called out by another person.

"Sin!" The leader of the quest’s Hunter group jogged to meet the young man.

’Oh boy... what does this twerp want now...’ Sin shook his head inwardly, ’Just let me go do my business...’

"I know I guarded your name to the others, but I wanted to thank you directly as well. What you did... it wasn’t just a small gesture." The man went on to introduce himself and explain just how much gratitude he had.

His name was Javen, a fairly well-known Hunter in Solstar. He wasn’t known for his strength, but rather his intelligent moves.

This made even Lord Surfin trust him enough to make him a leader for many of his dungeon quests.

As the conversation between the two came to an end, Javen began to speak about another topic that quickly turned Sin off.

"Hey... why don’t you join my group--"

"Nope. Sorry... no can do."
