I Don't Agree to the Terms-Chapter 1102 - 579: The Prophet Saw the World’s Decay, and the Prophet Perished
"Lula, today the temperature dropped by another three degrees, with no signs of recovery." A white-furred Snow Monster watched the fluctuating numbers on the Magic Device used to monitor temperature, his voice filled with concern.
"I know, many crops can't withstand the severe cold anymore. If this continues, there will be a reduction in food production."
"How's the arrangement of temperature-increasing Magic Devices going?"
The gray-furred Snow Monster, called Lula, sighed as he asked. As the leader of the entire settlement, he was naturally aware of the seriousness of the current situation, realizing it from the moment a Snow Monster froze to death.
He had also arranged countermeasures in a timely manner, but this bout of cold came too quickly and suddenly. The Snow Monster civilization wasn't prepared at all and was hit hard. He now didn't even know how many Snow Monsters had survived apart from his settlement. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
"They've been arranged, but the effect isn't good. Even with the full set of Magic Technology transplanted underground, the environmental changes can't be resisted." The white-furred Snow Monster's answer implied not to have high hopes, then continued: "And this sudden drop of three degrees is definitely not a good sign."
"The climate may have undergone a secondary mutation, and we must quickly investigate the cause."
At first glance, three degrees may not seem like much, but from the initially appropriate winter environment for Snow Monsters to one that can freeze them to death, in the Snow Monster civilization's metric, the temperature had dropped by only ten degrees in total.
This ten-degree drop was not sudden, but gradual, until today's temperature, which fell directly by three degrees, raising suspicions.
"Even if it is, so what?"
"You know that small Magic Devices are simply unable to withstand this bout of severe cold. The settlement barely survives, let alone exploring outside."
"And the world is so vast, where should we search for the cause?"
Lula naturally wanted to investigate the cause of the temperature drop and resolve it. The problem was that there was no way to do so. When the temperature dropped by ten degrees before, at least they could venture out with Magic Armor, but now it's dropped to thirteen degrees, and the durability of Magic Armor in the severe cold is rapidly decreasing, unable to last long.
There's a chance that once they go out, the Snow Monsters won't be able to return.
He thought about risking his life to go out, but it was essentially a one-way trip, something Lula naturally couldn't agree to.
"Alas, there's nothing we can do. Although food can still be assisted by Magic Devices for underground cultivation, we lack other resources, metals, fuels, etc. Without these things, Magic Devices can't operate." The other knew, having only food wasn't enough for survival.
While Magic Devices indeed use Magic Power as fuel, it's not just fuel. Maintenance and repair are also required, especially for large Magic Devices. If a mishap occurs, the entire settlement could fall into danger.
"Dig deeper, since the surface isn't suitable for survival, let's move closer to the core of the earth!" Lula knew they had no other choice.
"The core of the earth is probably also affected; it's already been detected that the heat source is disappearing." The other hesitated briefly before finally speaking.
"Don't worry about that. The main goal is to obtain enough fuel and minerals. Su Keite, I'm entrusting this task to you, and it must be properly supervised."
Lula didn't concern himself with this matter because, like the environmental anomaly, it was something he couldn't solve.
"No, it might be much worse. The Prophet died not long ago. He peered into the existence of some great terror and, before dying, said that our world was being engulfed by ice. If this continues, the world might perish soon." Su Keite spoke calmly, his white fur quieting down.
"So, you've succeeded as the new Prophet?" Lula was also stunned, not expecting the situation to turn out this way.
He was the Great Leader, while Su Keite was the Prophet's Disciple, groomed as a successor. He would learn and manage affairs by Lula's side, succeeding after the Prophet's death.
"No, the Prophet's power vanished; it wasn't passed to me. It seems that after he touched upon that great terror, his legacy was entirely erased by it." Su Keite's tone was flat, but Lula understood his sadness; however, this wasn't the time, nor could they afford to indulge in sorrow.
"Wait, so you know the source of the environmental anomaly?" Lula realized, no wonder Su Keite confided this in him.
"I only know a little. At least, our world isn't dead yet. If we don't stop it, you know all too well the outcome we'll face if the world perishes." Su Keite had not acted alone naturally due to his lack of strength and out of respect for Lula as the Great Leader.
"Do you know where this great terror is?"
"Or how much time we have left?"
Lula didn't immediately agree or refuse but first asked these questions.
Faced with a presence capable of bringing death to the entire world through cold—a presence the Prophet merely glimpsed, causing his death and cutting off the legacy—how much certainty could they possibly have?
"I don't know anything." Su Keite spoke honestly; the Prophet had only left these words before dying abruptly, without time to convey anything further.
