Chapter 334: The Bet

Zephyros stood there, his silver eyes gleaming as he studied Jack’s expression. The god’s lips curved into a smile.

"So," Zephyros said, "You actually want to make a wager with me? A god? Are you sure that’s for the best?"

He gestured broadly at the room, at the scattered women still watching from the perimeter with wide eyes. "Most mortals learn from others’ mistakes. You seem determined to make one."

Jack’s expression remained neutral, though internally he was measuring every word and action he made. "I’m not most mortals. And I’m not asking you to bet blind. I have terms."

"Terms." Zephyros’s smile widened, showing those perfect teeth. "Very well, Kaiser. What are these terms?"

"Simple," Jack said, his tone businesslike despite the divine presence still pressing against him like atmospheric weight. "If I win, you give me information."

The god’s eyebrows rose fractionally. "What information?"

"I will only tell you if I win. It’s information, I’m not asking you to part with something important."

"Do we have a deal?" Jack pressed, refusing to be distracted by Zephyros’s commentary.

"And if you lose?" The god leaned forward, slightly, his interest clearly piqued now. "What do I gain from this wager? Your humiliation? Your worship? Your firstborn child?"

"If I lose," Jack said clearly, meeting Zephyros’s gaze directly, "I accept your blessing. Willingly."

The change in Zephyros’ demeanor shifted.

His silver eyes lit up as someone had just offered him the most incredible gift imaginable. His smile crept onto his face bigger and bigger. The divine presence radiating from him intensified. He was getting exactly what he wanted.

"My blessing?" Zephyros repeated, as if confirming he’d heard correctly. "You’d accept it willingly if you lose?"

"That’s what I said," Jack confirmed.

The god began pacing, his movements still that impossible gliding motion that defied normal physics. His hands clasped behind his back as he processed this offer, clearly working through the possibilities.

"This is unexpected," Zephyros said, clearly delighted by the prospect. "When Draven won our wager, I lost a follower. Irritating, but ultimately replaceable. But this? The chance to claim someone with your potential as a permanent vessel for my divine influence?"

He stopped pacing and turned to face Jack fully, his expression holding a new gravity, though the excitement in his eyes was apparent. "You understand what accepting my blessing means, yes? It’s not just power. It changes you. Makes you more... receptive to life’s pleasures. More inclined toward indulgence. Less concerned with restraint and responsibility."

"I understand the risks," Jack said calmly, though internally he was counting on those very characteristics to make Zephyros overconfident.

"Then we can make this wager," Zephyros declared, his voice carrying divine authority that made the air itself vibrate slightly. "Though as a god, it’s only fair that you make terms of the challenge. I wouldn’t want people to know I cornered you. What did you have in mind?"

Jack responded shrewdly, "Though I should warn you, whatever challenge you set, I’ll win regardless. You might want to make it interesting."

The effect was exactly what Jack had hoped for.

Zephyros’s eyes narrowed, that competitive edge Jack had glimpsed earlier returning with full force. The god’s smile became sharper, more predatory, as if Jack had just issued a direct challenge to his divine judgment.

"You’ll win regardless?" Zephyros repeated this, a certain malevolence creeping into his amused tone. "Such confidence. Such absolute certainty. Tell me, Kaiser, do you actually believe that? Or are you simply trying to provoke me into making a mistake?"

"Does it matter?" Jack asked, keeping his voice level. "Either way, you’re going to accept the wager. Your ego won’t let you walk away from someone claiming they can resist your divine influence."

For a moment, Jack thought he might have pushed too far. The divine presence intensified, and the winds circulating through the room became almost violent, making the silk hangings snap and crack like whips.

Then Zephyros laughed. A genuine, unfiltered burst of sound that simultaneously filled the entire chamber with an echo.

"Oh, you magnificent little bastard," the god said, a sincere appreciation running parallel to a competitive edge in his voice. "You’re baiting me. Deliberately provoking me into accepting unfavorable terms because you know I can’t resist the challenge."

He crossed the distance between them in two smooth strides, extending his hand toward Jack with a grin that suggested he was enjoying this far more than he probably should have.

"I accept your wager, Jack Kaiser. And I’m going to enjoy watching you fail."

Jack took the offered hand without hesitation. The moment their palms connected, he felt something shift, but in some deeper way that transcended normal sensation.

Liike reality itself was acknowledged and the agreement, binding both parties to terms that couldn’t be broken without cosmic consequences.

The handshake lasted perhaps three seconds. When Zephyros released Jack’s hand, his grin had transformed into something almost feral with anticipation.

"Here are my terms," the god said, reaching into empty air and withdrawing something that definitely hadn’t existed moments before. "You’ll wear this for thirty days."

He held up a bracelet that gleamed in the ambient light. It was elegant, the kind of jewelry a noble might wear without drawing excessive attention. A band of what looked like platinum or white gold, set with a single red gem in the center that caught the light in the room, causing it to shine brightly.

"Beautiful, isn’t it?" Zephyros said, clearly admiring his own creation. "This bracelet will allow my blessing to work naturally within you. No violent reshaping of your soul. Just a gentle, constant influence that grows stronger with each passing day."

He held it out toward Jack, the red gem seeming to pulse. "Once you put this on, it locks onto your body for the duration of our wager. You can’t remove it, can’t destroy it, can’t use magic to suppress its effects. For thirty days, you’ll carry my divine influence with you everywhere you go."

"And the failure condition?" Jack asked, examining the bracelet without reaching for it yet.

"Simple," Zephyros replied, his smile widening. "If you give in to temptation. If you sleep with anyone, succumb to those urges that my blessing will steadily intensify. You lose. The bracelet will know. I’ll know. And the blessing becomes permanent."

He paused, letting that sink in, then added with obvious relish, "But if you somehow manage to resist for thirty full days, the bracelet releases, the blessing fades, and I’ll tell you any informationyou desire."

Jack studied the bracelet for a long moment, his expression giving nothing away. Internally, he was cataloging everything.

’Step two,’ Jack thought with cold satisfaction. ’Hook the fish. Make it seem like the fish is holding the bait rather than the other way around.’

"Fair enough," Jack said, reaching out to take the bracelet.

The moment his fingers closed around it, he felt the divine energy radiating from the metal.

He slipped it onto his right wrist. The bracelet adjusted automatically, shrinking to fit perfectly against his skin. Not tight enough to be uncomfortable, but snug enough that it clearly wasn’t coming off without divine intervention.

The red gem pulsed once, then twice, before settling into a steady glow that was visible but not overwhelming.

And then the blessing was activated.

It wasn’t violent. It wasn’t painful. Just a warmth that spread from the bracelet up his arm, across his chest, settling somewhere deep in his core where instinctive desire lived.
