Chapter 224: Chapter 224: Great Chen Island

The Great Dream Marsh is vast and boundless.

Yet within the waters, there is land.

These lands, divided by streams, lakes, wetlands, and swamps, are known as Land Islands.

In the Great Dream Marsh, the Land Islands are scattered like stars, countless in number.

And Great Chen Island is one of the largest Land Islands within the gathering areas!

Zhang Yuan’s small boat docked beside a simple pier.

After getting off the boat, he gave the young guide a silver tael as promised.

"Thank you, sir!"

The boy beamed with joy, bowing repeatedly to Zhang Yuan in gratitude.

He added, "Sir, my name is Shuisheng, and I’ve grown up here. If you need any help, just let me know!"

This boy was quite clever, knowing Zhang Yuan had likely never been to the Great Dream Marsh before.

Otherwise, he wouldn’t need a guide.

Most importantly, Zhang Yuan was generous, naturally prompting the boy to consider hitching himself to his benefactor.

Picking up some easy gains would be excellent, indeed!

Seeing that the boy was quite sharp, Zhang Yuan nodded and asked, "How do I find you then?"

Shuisheng hurriedly pointed to a row of mud houses on the right side of the pier and said, "I live there usually."

"Alright."

Zhang Yuan nodded, "Now, take me to Fuyun Inn."

Shuisheng was thrilled, "Yes, sir!"

He carried a woven sack with a large turtle ahead while Zhang Yuan followed unhurriedly.

Along the way, he took in the surroundings.

Where the boat houses sprawled, the area felt rural, whereas Great Chen Island undoubtedly belonged to the city.

Buildings here were much denser, with varied mud homes, stone houses, and wooden towers lined close together. Many shops lined the streets, bustling with activity.

Though it couldn’t compare to Xia Ruins, it rivaled a small county town.

The people living on this Land Island left a deep impression on Zhang Yuan.

Men and women in the streets were mostly strong and agile, with many carrying weapons. Despite their simple and ragged clothing, they exuded a fierce aura.

Some were particularly fierce, the proportion of Martial Artists was shockingly high!

However, there were no patrolling Samurai visible, and everyone kept their distance, wary and alert of each other.

Zhang Yuan noticed that Shuisheng always walked close to the roadside, actively avoiding approaching strangers.

Evidently, this was the daily norm here!

Suddenly, chaos erupted on the street ahead.

Shouts and screams echoed continuously.

A man was beaten to the ground, spewing blood and wailing miserably, looking incredibly pitiful.

Yet his assailant didn’t relent, rushing to stomp on his head.

Until that man fainted completely.

The assailant raised his head and looked around arrogantly, showing no fear or guilt.

Boldly blending into the crowd and disappearing.

Moments later, a group of beggars emerged from nowhere, hastily dragging the man into a nearby dark alley.

Those around acted as if nothing had happened.

The street quickly returned to its previous bustle and noise.

Only the blood left on the ground testified to the tragedy that had just happened!

"Sir."

Shuisheng noticed Zhang Yuan’s expression, glanced around, and then whispered, "Those are from the Great River Gang, very fierce ones that we can’t afford to provoke."

The boy seemed worried that Zhang Yuan might seek justice, hence the kind reminder.

Zhang Yuan chuckled.

He wasn’t one for meddling!

They continued forward, and soon enough arrived at Fuyun Inn.

"Let’s stop here."

Zhang Yuan pulled out another silver piece and handed it to Shuisheng, "This is your tip, also keep an eye on my boat so it doesn’t get stolen."

His small boat was moored beside the pier.

If left unattended, it might not last till tomorrow!

Shuisheng immediately patted his chest and assured Zhang Yuan that he would guard his boat well.

Upon leaving, the boy didn’t forget to hand Zhang Yuan the grass sack containing the big turtle.

Making Zhang Yuan slightly amused.

He simply took the turtle and walked into the inn.

This Fuyun Inn was the largest lodging on the island.

And Zhang Yuan had chosen to stay here for a reason.

Years ago, Han Zixun had been sending people to the Great Dream Marsh to infiltrate.

Gathering intelligence related to Yan Wushuang.

These years, Han Zixun, residing in Xia Ruins, had been closely tracking Yan Wushuang’s movements.

Planning revenge!

From this glamorous family scion, one could glimpse the immense power of personal hatred.

Zhang Yuan needed to confront Yan Wushuang, definitely requiring the latest information on him.

Fuyun Inn was the meeting point with his covert contact.

Just as Zhang Yuan entered the inn, a staff member approached swiftly, bowing and inquiring, "Excuse me, sir, are you staying or dining?"

This inn also served meals, with over a dozen tables occupied in the large hall.

The business was thriving. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞

"First, book me a top room."

Zhang Yuan handed over the grass sack, "Prepare some specialty dishes, and warm a pot of wine."

"Sure thing!"

The inn attendant took the turtle, smiling warmly, "Please proceed ahead; food and drink will be served shortly!"

Zhang Yuan sat at an empty table nearby, poured himself a cup of tea from the table’s teapot.

Sipping leisurely.

He sharply noticed several eyes on him.

Wine patrons within the inn’s hall numbered in the dozens, including tough and formidable ones.

Some overheard Zhang Yuan’s conversation with the attendant.

While some were merely curious, others had inscrutable glances, seemingly calculating something.

There were also those whose eyes gleamed maliciously, appearing quite unfriendly!

Yet Zhang Yuan ignored these stares.

Once the attendant served wine and dishes, he placed a silver ingot on the table, "Deduct accordingly."

The Great Dream Marsh was unique; silver notes were ineffective here.

Having learned this, Zhang Yuan carried plenty of silver taels and gold leaf.

The ten-tael heavy snow silver drew even more attention.

Along with covetous looks!

Zhang Yuan turned a blind eye, focused on enjoying his wine and food.

The dishes were primarily river delicacies, lacking robust seasoning, offering only ordinary taste.

They solely excelled in freshness.

The main dish, a big bowl of purple rice, was quite distinctive, unexpectedly pleasant in texture and taste.

He finished one bowl and ordered another.

Immersed in satisfaction!

After feasting, Zhang Yuan had the attendant clear the leftovers, then requested a pot of hot tea to savor slowly.

Watching as guests vacated one by one, Zhang Yuan grew slightly impatient waiting, when a seemingly ordinary middle-aged man sat down across from him.

The newcomer wore a humble smile, tentatively asking, "May I ask, are you from Xia Ruins?"

Zhang Yuan put down his teacup, smiled broadly, "I’m Zhang."
