In the biological laboratory, three live samples of the combat offspring captured were locked in the special cages previously provided by Chen Xin. Around them, a group of biologists were conducting various studies.
The three combat offspring in the cage appeared somewhat listless, not because they were worn out from too many experiments, but because since they were captured, the biologists had tried various methods but couldn't find their food source, leaving them without any sustenance until now.
This was certainly very bad news for the biologists.
These three combat offspring had been captured with great effort; if they starved to death, it would obviously be a huge loss.
What's worse is if they don't find anything from their studies. Not to mention the great cost paid by the military and Chen Xin to capture them, even the biologists would feel like strangling themselves.
Unfortunately, these three combat offspring indeed hadn't consumed anything. Even though all possible foods had been offered, none could attract the attention of the combat offspring.
Hence, when Chen Xin came to inspect their research progress, he faced not only the three hungry, listless combat offspring but also pleas for assistance from the biologists.
"Gosh, you've given me quite a problem here!" Faced with this issue, Chen Xin also felt troubled, "These alien organisms, how should I know what they eat? Whether these creatures eat anything from Earth is a big question mark."
This wasn't Chen Xin shirking responsibility; he genuinely couldn't think of a good solution.
If the biologists wanted better research equipment or more detailed analyses of alien organisms, it would just take a word from Chen Xin.
But understanding what they eat was too difficult a problem for Chen Xin.
Yet the biologists could only respond bitterly to Chen Xin's complaint, "We really have no other choice but to seek your help as a last resort, Chen Academy Member. If this continues, these precious live samples can only starve to death."
Upon hearing this from the biologists, Chen Xin could only scratch his head and brace himself.
He walked up to the containers holding the three live samples, observed them carefully, and then asked the biologists, "Have you collected their feces? Isn't it possible to analyze the composition of the feces to determine what they've eaten?"
"We thought about that too, but these alien organisms haven't excreted anything. They don't even have excretory openings or cloacas on them, and even our previous dissections revealed no excretory organs inside, only digestive organs, as if they eat without excreting." The biologist's expression at this point was like they've been played a big joke.
However, upon hearing this from the biologist, Chen Xin had a different thought, asking, "If there's a food that can be completely digested by their stomachs, does that mean excretion isn't necessary?"
"Theoretically yes, but it doesn't fit with evolutionary biology! Evolution doesn't allow the entire digestive organ to evolve into such a closed loop. Nature doesn't have food that can be completely digested and absorbed without needing excretion!" Although considering Chen Xin's hypothesis was somewhat possible, the biologists clearly felt it was unlikely.
But Chen Xin shook his head and said to the biologists, "Alien life itself is a community; these offspring are bred from a mother body. If the offspring initially don't need digestion, then over time, they could possibly devolve their excretory functions."
"This... is theoretically possible, but..." The biologists couldn't help but shake their heads. Although nature is full of wonders and possibilities, even for alien organisms, this seemed overly exaggerated.
Nonetheless, Chen Xin didn't entertain any additional thoughts, simply asking the researchers beside him, "Are the mother body remains we acquired earlier still intact? Get some of the mother body's fluids and see if they eat them."
Upon hearing this, the biologists naturally did not object, thinking about how mammals rely on their mother's milk for survival at a young age.
Take human newborns as an example; as their gastrointestinal function improves and digestion strengthens, they may go a long time without excreting if only drinking breast milk.
With these alien organisms, they clearly have fully developed digestive functions. If Chen Xin's judgment is correct, there might truly be a possibility of not needing to excrete.
Yet the biologists were still astonished, remarked, "How did this evolve? Natural evolution might be miraculous, but not to the extent of evolving something like this!"
Facing the biologists' exclamation, Chen Xin shook his head, uncertainly claiming, "These organisms might not be naturally evolved. They might have been guided or interfered with." 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
"Guided, interfered? Are you suggesting these are alien biological weapons?" The biologists evidently thought of a typical sci-fi narrative plot.
"It's possible, but a bigger possibility is that this community has higher intelligence superior beings, capable of guiding and controlling the reproduction and evolution of subordinate beings. If it's a hive consciousness or similar to an insect swarm, they might gradually differentiate into this form during evolution." Chen Xin's imagination evidently ran wilder, presenting his hypothesis to the biologists: "Suppose creatures like ants can continuously evolve, developing high intelligence. With the queen ant's control over the colony, couldn't they potentially control the worker ants' evolution and reproduction?"
"This..." The biologists hadn't considered such a possibility. Yet upon serious analysis, they had to nod and affirmingly reply, "It's indeed possible. Considering the queen ant's control over the colony, there is a possibility of adjusting the reproductive and evolutionary direction through pheromone-like channels."
While Chen Xin and the biologists discussed this topic, the researchers also retrieved the previously preserved mother body fluid samples. Under the watchful eyes of Chen Xin and the biologists, they placed them into the container holding the live samples.
Finally, under the expectant gazes of everyone, the three live samples displayed a desire to eat.
