Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Go If You Want

"Ruins!"

The Black Armored Giant Ape, having consumed six Tier-3 vicious beasts and now towering at 18.3 meters, stood amidst the dark mist, blocked by a fault line over twenty meters wide.

The fault ripped the earth apart, forming a bottomless abyss, within which thick black mist rolled, emanating a chill that made the Giant Ape’s blood stir.

Across the crevice lay a sprawling, majestic ruin.

Constructed from bronze, even the remnants of the massive double doors reached hundreds of meters in height, with palaces faintly rising behind, though obscured by the mist and not clearly visible.

This was the most complete ruin the Black Armored Giant Ape had ever encountered.

Unfortunately, time was running short today; it needed to take over a shift and could only return to explore tomorrow night.

After casting a deep glance at the ancient bronze doors, the Ape rapidly shrank in size, soon disappearing with the Demon Blade in hand. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Three in the morning.

Jiang Hou and Zong Zheng Nan Mo were at the barbecue stall for shift change. Despite searching half the night, Zong Zheng Nan Mo came up empty-handed, while Jiang Hou... had spent another night out in the barren northwest winds.

At 7:50 AM, leaning against a wall on the roadside opposite the school, Jiang Hou watched the students entering and frowned slightly.

"Zong Zheng, I think this waiting-around approach is useless, too clumsy, lacking any thrill of investigation."

Squatting on the ground, Zong Zheng Nan Mo nodded slightly, "I feel the same."

Jiang Hou pondered, "Since the mutant isn’t showing up, our breakthrough must focus on those two deceased students. They were students, so maybe we can find some clues at school."

"I’ll leave this to you; don’t you enjoy digging up gossip?" Jiang Hou said, patting Zong Zheng Nan Mo’s shoulder.

"Alright, leave it to me," Zong Zheng Nan Mo nodded confidently, assured that school rumors were within his realm of expertise.

Not keeping Jiang Hou waiting for long, Zong Zheng Nan Mo returned from his search after the first two classes with a discovery.

"Jiang Hou, I’ve found something," he whispered to Jiang Hou.

"What did you find?" Jiang Hou’s fatigue from two sleepless nights vanished as his interest peaked.

Zong Zheng Nan Mo whispered, "I went to Sun Fangyi and Cheng Gaolang’s classes and heard they’re both excellent students, good-looking, and have great relationships with classmates."

"Everything appeared normal, but then a freshman girl from Class 9 privately informed me."

"She saw Sun Fangyi secretly confess to Li Mengwu over a week ago but was rejected."

"Then a few days later, she saw Cheng Gaolang do the same behind the teaching building, and he was killed that night..."

Both immediately looked toward the middle of the classroom, where the bright and beautiful girl sat at her seat, engrossed in her phone.

Both had confessed to Li Mengwu! During that period, their small group of six was coincidentally at odds, and Jiang Chong had been absent from school for days.

These clues led to the suspect unmistakably.

Jiang Hou’s expression hardened, "I’ll go to the school administration later to check Jiang Chong’s records and address. Zong Zheng, you look into whether Li Mengwu knows anything about Jiang Chong."

As members of the Celestial Punishment Department, even reservists Jiang Hou and his team held law enforcement power.

Upon presenting identification, their authority had priority over the Law Enforcement Bureau, allowing coordination with certain official resources, including schools.

However, revealing their identities to the school’s teachers was inevitable this way.

Just as Jiang Hou finished speaking, Zong Zheng Nan Mo objected, "Damn, why do I have to talk to Li Mengwu?"

"Because you’re better at dealing with girls," Jiang Hou looked at him in confusion.

The guy had few friends in class, but he had numerous female friends across the three school grades, adding people to his phone’s hundreds of groups with rumors flying everywhere.

Zong Zheng Nan Mo shook his head, "No, I can’t deal with her, we don’t get along. You handle this; I’ll go to the administration after class."

"...You know her?"

Zong Zheng Nan Mo said vaguely, "Not exactly, but things were awkward on the first day of high school."

"You’ve never mentioned this before." Jiang Hou was surprised; they’d been seatmates for two years, and he’d never heard this.

"Hmph, why mention unpleasant stuff?"

Due to Zong Zheng Nan Mo’s strong resistance, the task of asking Li Mengwu fell to Jiang Hou.

Noon.

After lunch at the teachers’ cafeteria, Li Mengwu walked through the corridor between the two school buildings when Jiang Hou emerged from a corner, blocking her path.

Looking at the bright and beautiful girl before him, Jiang Hou courteously said, "Li Mengwu, may I speak with you?"

"...You’re the classmate who sits in the back?" Li Mengwu frowned.

To Li Mengwu, Jiang Hou was an ordinary classmate, like most others, paired with Zong Zheng Nan Mo.

His name, something like Jiang something.

It couldn’t be helped, with the stunning Zong Zheng Nan Mo beside him, Jiang Hou, despite looking quite delicate before, was easily overlooked.

Jiang Hou’s sudden stoppage made Li Mengwu suspect he was another guy about to confess to her, albeit a classmate she barely noticed.

"Surprising that you know me, but I have another identity," Jiang Hou said, showing a black notebook, the Celestial Punishment and national emblem catching Li Mengwu off guard.

With the recent official announcements, everyone was aware of the Transcendent Celestial Punishment Department’s existence.

Li Mengwu immediately spoke in surprise, "I hadn’t expected you to be a Transcendent too, and part of the Celestial Punishment Department."

"Too."

Jiang Hou raised an eyebrow, "Your comment implies you’ve seen other Transcendents."

Without answering Jiang Hou’s question, Li Mengwu’s expression turned complex, "I assume you’re here about Jiang Chong."

Jiang Hou’s gaze intensified, "Did he kill those two classmates?"

Li Mengwu shook her head, "I’m not certain he did, but I’m sure he’s involved. We fought over it the next day."

"Plus, I knew the officials would come for him eventually, but I hadn’t expected classmates to do so."

Her words brought a peculiar realization, akin to discovering a classmate was a member of a secret organization during high school.

Jiang Hou pondered, "Li Mengwu, do you know when Jiang Chong awakened and his abilities?"

"It’s been a while; about half a year ago, he suddenly told me he’d gained Extraordinary Abilities, including becoming larger and growing scales and claws, with immense strength."

"Though he gained Extraordinary Power, he’s become increasingly agitated and impulsive, though it’s not apparent outwardly."

"Lately, he’s had more trouble controlling his emotions." Li Mengwu paused.

"Do you know where he is now?" Jiang Hou continued.

Li Mengwu replied calmly, "He should’ve left Yidu, but I don’t know where he went."

"The day before yesterday, he suddenly came to me, wanting me to leave with him. I refused, and we haven’t communicated since, not even via phone."

Left Yidu!

Jiang Hou frowned, surprised by this turn of events.
