Chapter 5 - Lightning and Fire

A few weeks had passed since his first hunt, with nothing major happening during that time.

Rex spent his days training and occasionally hunting with Korr. He attempted to tame a few beasts but found none worth keeping.

With only three slots available, he was reluctant to waste them on average beast.

Nevertheless, like every other day, Rex trained diligently.

After finishing, he left the panda's den in search of herbs and fruits, as Korr had requested.

Both were easy to find in the surrounding area, so Korr allowed him to go alone.

He left the den and began wandering in search of fruits and herbs.

Although he did lack proper knowledge, he could still recognize them, as Korr had often used them to make medicine.

Rex walked through the dense trees and bushes, scanning the area around the den. Apart from the endless stretch of trees, he could find nothing.

Pausing his search, he contemplated, "Should I go a little deeper?"

"I've come all this way. Let's go a little deeper," he said, convincing himself and deciding to go a little further in.

Even after going deeper into the woods, he still, had no luck finding anything.

"Ugh, why isn't there a damn fruit or herb here?" Rex placed his hands on his hips in frustration, losing patience.

After searching for an hour, he finally noticed a similar-looking fruit that Korr wanted.

"Hah... finally, but there's only one... whatever," he grumbled.

A single apple-like purple fruit hung from the tree. Being a few meters away from the fruit, he walked toward it.

As Rex was about to grab the fruit, he heard the bushes rustling, and from the corner of his eye, he saw a monkey beast with yellowish fur, sharp eyes full of mischief, and a long tail swaying behind it. It was a head shorter than Rex.

It jumped onto a tree branch and swiftly snatched the fruit, locking eyes with Rex for a few seconds as if mocking him. Then, it leaped to another tree, widening the distance between them.

"Huh?" Rex was stunned for a moment and shouted abruptly, "S-stop!"

To his delight, the beast stopped on a tree, surprising him.

Looking at Rex, the monkey extended its hand as if offering him the fruit.

"Can it understand my words?" He raised an eyebrow, softening his gaze.

Rex smiled faintly. "Thank you for giving me the fru—"

As Rex extended his hand and was about to thank the beast for the fruit, the beast ate it in front of him and started... dancing.

Rex blinked; he was at a loss for words.

Then, he snapped, "This fuc—" He bit back his words and hurled the dagger he always carried with great precision and force.

With a swoosh, it directly flew toward the monkey's head.

Startled by the attack, the monkey lost its footing and slipped from the tree, the dagger still grazing its cheek slightly.

However, the monkey didn't fall.

It swiftly wrapped its tail around a branch, hanging upside down from the tree. Its teasing intensified as it made bizarre hand gestures and playful noises.

"Tsk," Rex clicked his tongue and whispered in a cold voice, "Now it's asking for it."

He was growing restless, but something clicked, and he shook his head in understanding.

"Hoooo," he exhaled slowly, calming down, and spoke under his breath. "What are you doing, Rex? It's just a brainless beast. Don't get agitated by it."

With a relaxed posture, he shrugged and looked at the beast as if it didn't matter what the beast did anymore.

He would stay calm.

The monkey continued the teasing by shaking its bum and trying various parlor tricks it had honed, but nothing moved Rex.

He was like a Buddha, unmoving.

Nothing made him angry anymore. Now, Rex was testing his own patience.

The beast also turned silent after not receiving any reaction from him.

Rex smirked. "Giving up, huh?"

The beast started chewing the fruit, ignoring him.

Rex saw the beast eating the fruit silently. Misunderstanding that it had given up, he let his guard down.

Then, the beast tossed the half-eaten fruit at Rex, smacking him right on the cheek, leaving a sticky, watery residue behind.

The revenge was taken, and the beast started dancing once again.

His eyes twitched, burning with fury. Clenching his fists, he dashed at full speed toward the monkey, hell-bent on catching the infuriating creature.

The monkey stopped dancing and moved away, keeping its distance from him—only to halt and start teasing him again once it had gained enough distance.

Rex stopped to retrieve his dagger from the ground before resuming the chase.

Rex sprinted on the ground, while the monkey effortlessly glided through the trees, keeping ahead of him.

He used [Eye of Tamer] on the beast, but there was nothing.

Just some question marks.

This back-and-forth continued until Rex checked the beast's status—and abruptly stopped in his tracks.

"Huff... T-that thing is stronger than me—a lot stronger," he muttered under his breath, panting as he searched for a tree and slumped against it for support.

"What a shitty day," he scoffed, rolling his eyes in irritation.

Catching his breath, he glanced around to survey his surroundings. Before he knew it, he had ventured deep into the forest.

"Great, just perfect. Now I'm lost. This day just keeps getting worse."

He rested there for a few minutes and looked at the monkey, but the beast looked...

Frightened!

Its teasing expression had vanished—only fear remained. It bolted away, moving much faster than when Rex had been chasing it.

Rex tensed and hastily stood up, ready to leave this damned place.

When...

BOOM!

A loud boom echoed, halting him in his tracks.

"Now what?" he scoffed, disbelief lacing his voice.

He turned toward the sound, irritation clear in his movements. But when his eyes landed on the scene, they widened—

Two magical beasts were locked in battle.

It was... "Beautiful," he muttered absently, the word slipping out before he even realized.

One was a jaguar-like beast, its coal-black fur covered in fiery patches of red and orange that flickered like living flames. Its smoldering crimson eyes burned with a mix of rage and dominance.

Opposing it was a majestic bird, its feathers a deep, vibrant purple, with arcs of lightning crackling across its body.

Both clashed fiercely, each aiming to take the other's life.

Standing on the ground, the jaguar unleashed a beam of fire from its mouth.

The bird dodged with a zap and shot back an arc of lightning toward the jaguar from the sky.

Their fight... it was breathtaking.

As they clashed ferociously, Rex cautiously hid behind the trees, looking for a chance to slip away.

He had no intention of being noticed.

As he cautiously retreated with measured steps, a stray attack suddenly hurtled straight toward him.

He hurriedly leaped to the other side, barely dodging the deadly attack.

As he moved, hiding behind another tree, an arc of lightning shot toward him, his heartbeat pounding in his chest.

"What?... Fuck, are they fighting each other or targeting me?" he muttered, shuddering.

And why are they both closing in on my side? He swallowed hard, peeking from behind a tree.

Glancing around, he noticed his surroundings had been leveled in mere moments, with only a few trees still standing tall.

It was getting harder to go unnoticed.

He used the remaining trees for cover, cautiously moving away from the beasts.

Their fight had scorched and blackened most of the surrounding trees and ground.

The two beasts clashed fiercely in the open clearing, having carved out their own battleground by reducing the surrounding trees to ash.

Smoke and the acrid scent of burning wood stung Rex's nostrils.

Their fight was very fierce, to say the least.

However, Rex concluded that the jaguar was much stronger, its relentless attacks overwhelming the bird's defenses.

Most of the lightning bird's feathers were scorched and charred, while the bright crackles of its lightning barely made a dent in the jaguar's tough hide.

Their attacks grew stronger and more deadly with each passing second, and again...

Another attack came hurtling toward him.

Damn it, Why should I suffer in their battle? His mouth went dry.

Even though these were just stray fragments of their real attacks, they were still powerful enough to kill him—proof of just how terrifyingly strong the beasts were.

Unfortunately, this time for him, there was no place to go without being discovered.

All the trees around him were leveled, except for a few barely standing, However, this final attack erased even those, leaving the land barren.

From a bird's-eye view, he would stick out like a sore thumb.

As both beasts saw him, Rex trembled and freaked out.

"Fuck!" He bolted, pouring every ounce of strength into his escape from this hellish battlefield.

I need to find a place to hide.

His eyes darted around, searching desperately for a safe place.

If he didn't find one...?

Mind you, he was completely exposed, with no cover whatsoever. If even one of those stray attacks came his way again, that could very well be—

The end of me!

Fortunately, the leveled trees had broadened his vision, allowing him to see more.

His eyes widened when he spotted—

A cave.

Rex ran, his focus locked solely on the cave. Adrenaline coursed through him...

Narrowing his vision.

The sharp booms of battle faded into the distance.

Huff... Badump.

His heartbeat...

His breathing...

Rex could hear them clearly now!

Meanwhile.

The bird noticed him heading toward the cave and grew vigilant. Without hesitation, it unleashed a devastating attack on the jaguar beast.

Lightning slithered through the air like a serpent before striking the jaguar.

The devastating attack sent the jaguar beast crashing to the ground, its body twitching before it went completely still.

The lightning bird's attack finished. Its body trembling from exhaustion as arcs of electricity crackled weakly around it.

Its piercing gaze locked onto Rex as it dove toward him with blinding speed.

Rex's heart skipped a beat. Dread clawed at his chest as he pushed himself harder, his breath caught in his throat. Pouring every ounce of strength into each step, he lunged forward—

—and dove into the cave.
