I Can Tame Everything!-Chapter 13: Village head is kind
Chapter 13 - Village head is kind
"Hey, you lost or something?" the young man asked, his curious eyes scanning Rex from head to toe.
"Uhm... yes," Rex replied, scratching his cheek with a sheepish expression, trying to show a puzzled look on his face.
Rex decided to act as though he had lost his memories and unknowingly ended up here, ensuring no one would question his lack of common knowledge.
Why? It played to his advantage and was partially true.
Having spent most of his life in isolation, he knew nothing of the world beyond the forest and had no understanding of how it truly worked.
"Can you please tell me where I am?" Rex asked with an innocent face, continuing his act.
"We're on the outskirts of the Myrrhaven Kingdom," the young man replied, raising a curious brow.
Gesturing ahead, he added, "Anyway, come on, let's head into the village."
As they walked, he continued, "By the way, what's your name?" His tone was casual, matching Rex's pace with ease.
"My name is Rex," he said calmly.
"And yours?"
"Darius," the young man replied with a warm smile.
The two exchanged names while making their way into the village.
"Oh, Darius, Who's this young fellow?" an old bald man called out, causing Rex and Darius to halt in their tracks.
Darius introduced Rex to the old man and said, "I found him wandering near the entrance. Looks like he's lost."
The old man bombarded Rex with questions, but all he got in return was, "I'm sorry, I can't remember anything. I've lost my memories," repeated like a broken record.
The old man rubbed his temples in frustration before asking one final question, "You don't even remember your parents?"
Rex shook his head. "No... I don't," he replied softly, his voice tinged with uncertainty.
"Hmm... I see now. You must be from a noble family," the old man said, stroking his chin thoughtfully.
"The way you talk, your golden eyes, sharp features, and strong, healthy build... only someone with access to good food and wealth could look like that," the old man remarked, his gaze scrutinizing Rex thoughtfully.
Is that old man putting a price on me? Rex mused.
Rex considered correcting the old man's misunderstanding but quickly dismissed the idea.
If they misunderstand me, that's not my problem. At least they'll treat me well. he reasoned.
"Take him to my house, Darius," the old man said warmly, gesturing toward a modest house nearby.
"We should help him recover his memories and, hopefully, reunite him with his family."
"Also, I almost forgot. Young Rex, we have a dinner party tonight. Please join us."
"Thank you, I'll surely join," Rex replied with a polite nod.
Darius nodded and motioned for Rex to follow. Together, they walked to the old man's house and entered a modest room. It wasn't anything luxurious, but it was enough for Rex to stay comfortably.
"I see that the village lord is very kind," Rex exclaimed with a smile.
"..."
"Where do you stay, Darius?" Rex asked, settling onto the creaky wooden bed.
"I stay in this room, and it seems we'll be sharing it now. So, I guess I've got some good company," Darius replied with a small smile before continuing,
"Do you need something to eat?"
Rex nodded, and Darius left the room, saying, "I'll be back with some food."
Rex glanced around. The room's walls felt confining, a stark contrast to the endless expanse of the forest he was used to.
There wasn't much inside—just a simple bed, a wooden table in one corner, and a dull, rustic sword leaning against the wall in another corner.
Rex waited a few minutes before Darius returned with warm food, the smell of porridge and mixed vegetables wafting through the air.
Darius handed Rex one of the two bowls of porridge. They both sat on the bed, quietly savoring the simple yet hearty meal.
The comforting warmth of the food brought a sense of ease, making the small room feel a little more like home to Rex.
Rex glanced at the worn-out sword and asked, "Do you like swordsmanship?" while scooping up a spoonful of porridge.
Darius glanced at the sword and shrugged with a sigh. "I don't know... it's the only weapon I could get my hands on to train with."
"Otherwise, all we have are... small kitchen knives," he mumbled, his tone a mix of laziness and frustration.
Rex noticed the change in Darius's tone. He paused eating and narrowed his eyes before asking in a calm yet gentle voice, "Do you not like it here?"
Forcing a smile, Darius chuckled awkwardly. "Haha, no, that's not it." He lowered his head and scooped a spoonful of porridge.
Rex's steady gaze lingered on Darius, silently urging him to say more. But when Darius remained quiet, He picked up his spoon and resumed eating, giving up.
"Well, it's kind of boring here, haha," Darius barked out a short, impatient laugh, finally deciding to speak.
"...I want to explore and become stronger... like those stories I've heard." His dull expression gradually brightened with excitement as he continued:
"You know, there are people out there who can reshape entire landscapes with a single attack, cross miles in the blink of an eye, and wield magic so powerful it can summon hurricanes, raise mountains, or reduce forests to ash in seconds.
Some can halt entire armies with just a wave of their hand..."
Darius initially hesitated to share his thoughts, but as the excitement of those stories filled his mind, he couldn't stop himself.
"I want to be like them... They're treated with such respect and admiration," Darius said, his voice filled with longing.
Rex listened intently, noticing a spark in Darius's eyes as he spoke about the world.
I guess he's really passionate about what he's saying, Rex thought with a small smile, letting out an audible chuckle that caught Darius's attention.
"Are you making fun of me?" Darius asked with a frown, his tone sharp, clearly mistaking Rex's small chuckle for an insult.
"Huh? No, why would I make fun of you? I... actually have a goal too..." Rex said, pausing for a moment.
A glint of determination flashed in his golden eyes.
"...To take everything this world has to offer."
"Pfft...Hahaha."

"I'm sorry, Rex, I couldn't hold it back—" Darius burst into laughter, clutching his stomach.
Rex blinked, then let out a chuckle himself. "What? You don't think I can do it?"
Darius laughed, shaking his head. "No, no, it's just—everything the world has to offer? That's a bit... ambitious, don't you think?"
Rex shrugged. "I don't know," he replied casually.
"Anyways, do you want to spar?" Darius proposed, a small smirk forming on his face.
"Spar? Sure, that sounds fun," Rex agreed. Finishing the last bit of porridge with a slurp, he stood up, stretching slightly.
Darius grabbed the sword from the corner, and they both stepped outside.
They walked a short distance until they stood on clear open ground under the evening sky.
Darius tightened his grip on the rusty sword, pointing it at Rex with both hands.
Noticing Rex standing unarmed, he frowned and asked, "Do you not have a weapon?"
"Don't worry, I won't be needing it," Rex provoked.
