Chapter 979: Chapter 273: Wuyi Sect

Protected by a Rank 6 White Zombie and heeding Gu Han’s advice, Yan Luoyu safely entered Beimang’s territory without incident, yet soon after his arrival, he felt the striking difference between this land and Longzhou.

Beimang was in utter chaos!

Perhaps owing to the fierce and ignorant local customs, the inhabitants of Beimang hardly had any concept of building cities, mainly because the area was filled with hills and rivers, coupled with countless miasma-filled marshes, substantially reducing the habitable area for humans.

And the resource-rich rainforest never lacked food supply, making the residents who lived by the marshes even less inclined to venture out; therefore, Beimang had many villages but few cities, with dozens to hundreds of tribal villages in nearly every major river basin.

However, the principle that holds true for everything dictates that with great numbers, trouble is bound to arise.

Even the wilderness-rich mountains of Beimang couldn’t withstand the endless expansion of humanity, and as the human population grew, the once-resource-abundant Beimang finally reached its limit. Thus, wars between tribes began.

For food, for water, for reproduction, for survival!

The more primitive the civilization, the more brutal the means of warfare, and Beimang eventually became a fearsome barbaric land in people’s tales. The tropical rainforest, teeming with miasma, poisonous insects, fierce beasts, and spirit birds, became a natural barrier of this wild land, almost completely isolating it from the civilized aristocratic families.

Apart from a few cities in Beimang that had trade relations with other clans, the vast majority of Beimang tribes lived in complete isolation from the world.

All civilized morals of the world are born from material conditions; in a barren place like Beimang, perhaps only those few cities and the divine mountains where the sects reside shine with civilization. But none of this alters the outsiders’ perception of Beimang as a place of savagery.

After entering Beimang, Yan Luoyu couldn’t even find a path resembling a road, and if it wasn’t for the Rank 6 White Zombie’s ability to traverse walls and ridges as if they were flat ground, he would have been completely immobilized in this wild land.

But good luck can’t always be on one’s side. Penetrating hundreds of miles into Beimang, he eventually encountered a group of young natives, dressed in simple clothes but with fierce expressions.

Seeing their malicious gazes, Yan Luoyu had no choice but to strike first; he commanded the White Zombie to kill them all and then fled the scene.

In any other place, such actions might not have left any trace, but he could never have imagined just how united the tribes of the wild lands were. Every village would roll call in the evening to ensure all tribespeople were present before starting their meal. If even one person was missing, the whole village would mobilize to search.

Each tribe’s hunting areas were designated, so when they discovered several tribe members had been killed, the entire tribe poured out to track down Yan Luoyu.

Though the White Zombie had enormous strength and could traverse mountains and rivers as if they were flat ground, carrying a coffin plus the weight of an adult was bound to leave traces. The tribe’s warriors followed these marks, tracking Yan Luoyu’s steps and eventually encountered him by the bank of a great river.

Dozens of them, without uttering a single word, ambushed the White Zombie carrying the coffin. Fortunately, thanks to its thick skin and the days of fortification with the Yin Body Refining technique, the White Zombie wasn’t smashed to pieces. Yan Luoyu, hiding inside the coffin, also detected the enemy’s assault and took control of the White Zombie to fight against these attackers.

But the zombies, after all, were lifeless things, less agile than martial artists; they were being driven back step by step. Just when Yan Luoyu was on the brink of despair, several emerald Spirit Arts swept across the riverbank. The intense green light was blinding, making it impossible to keep one’s eyes open; but when he was able to see again, those strong individuals who had been chasing him were all dead.

A group of martial artists, dressed in azure robes embroidered with images of wolves and large serpents, had approached and encircled the Corpse Refiners. The White Zombies tried to break out but were repeatedly blasted back by waves of cyan-green Spirit Arts, howling in pain from the blows.

Having escaped a pack of jackals only to encounter a group of wolves, Yan Luoyu resigned himself to his fate and climbed out of the coffin, shouting at the people, “Stop!”

The leader, a middle-aged man of robust stature, had been puzzled as to why a sixth-grade White Zombie would appear here; now, seeing Yan Luoyu, he had an epiphany.

After sizing up Yan Luoyu, the burly man laughed and said, “To be able to command a sixth-grade White Zombie at such a young age is an achievement that would be respected anywhere. May I ask, young master, what brings you to these desolate mountains and wild ridges?”

“Good sirs!” Yan Luoyu bowed to the robust man while suppressing the fear in his heart, “My family has encountered a great disaster, forcing me to come to Beimang to seek refuge with relatives. If you would allow me to pass today, I assure you there will be a reward!”

Yan Luoyu had intended to use the misunderstanding about the Corpse Refiners to make the man with the bear pattern on his chest think he had substantial backing, hoping to intimidate him; instead, he managed to anger several of the man’s subordinates.

A young man standing next to the robust man pointed at Yan Luoyu’s nose and shouted, “Hey! You little brat, do you know who you’re talking to? How dare you be so rude, not even kneeling!”

The shout exploded in Yan Luoyu’s ears like thunder, leaving his head buzzing, and he found himself unable to utter the words he wanted to explain.

The robust man, however, turned and patted his subordinate on the shoulder, “It’s understandable for an outsider to be unaware of the Saint Sect. Why bother with such formalities?”

“Hmph, big brother is too kind. If it were up to me, I’d say just kill the brat who doesn’t know how high the sky is!”

Another man standing beside the robust man, crossing his arms, said to the pale-faced Yan Luoyu, “Listen up, boy. Standing before you is Wuyi Sect, Bluewater Banner of the north, Snakefang Mountain’s seventh-grade Commander, Tong Dali. Come and pay your respects at once!”

Having come to his senses, Yan Luoyu turned deathly pale and hurriedly bowed to Tong Dali and the two men beside him, “Yan Luoyu pays his respects to Commander Tong and the two distinguished sirs!”

“At least you know your place!” The man with the serpent embroidered on his chest spoke again, “Encountering our Holy Hunt today is your good fortune. You say your family is in decline and you’ve nowhere to go? Why not just join the Saint Sect, huh?”

Yan Luoyu had not expected that this group he’d just met would make such an invitation. He had wanted to refuse, but looking at the two men beside Tong Dali with unfriendly expressions, he simply couldn’t bring himself to say no, so he stuttered, “I am of modest talents and learning, and moreover, I carry on my family’s legacy. I fear it will be too late to start learning your esteemed Sect’s Divine Arts now…”

Heh! “Leave such concerns to us!” the man with the serpent embroidered on his chest said again, “Can our Sect’s martial arts, which can be mastered without those decades of arduous training required out there, even be compared? Just join our Sect and be baptized, and as long as the Divine Symbol accepts you, you’ll be able to wield the Sect’s unique powers!”

Pointing to the group of martial artists surrounding the Corpse Refiners, the man continued, “When I convinced these lads to join the Saint Sect, they had the same expression as you, fearful and too scared to speak their minds. But ask them now—is there any among them who wants to leave the Sect?”
