I Can Hear the Heart's Voice of Traditional Chinese Medicine-Chapter 249 - 112: Mountain Burning Fire, Heart-piercing Cold_3
The second is described as Heaven-piercing Cold, which treats muscle heat and bone steaming. It starts deep and then moves shallow. It uses Six Yin with Three Exits and Three Entries, tightening and slow pressing, withdraws heat reliably.
All of it must be rubbed finely, the guideline for removing diseases."
Zhou Jiande looked surprised: "Dr. Lu, you've studied the 'Golden Needle Poem' as well?"
"I've seen some of it."
Lu Xuan nodded slightly: "In the 'Golden Needle Poem', the records of Mountain Burning Fire and Heart-piercing Cold are very brief and do not specify concrete operation methods.
For example, how should one understand 'start shallow then deep' and 'start deep then shallow'?
What exactly is the difference between 'using Nine Yang with Three Advances and Three Retreats' and 'using Six Yin with Three Exits and Three Entries'?
And what's the connection between 'slow lifting and tight pressing' and 'tighten and slow press'?
How should one proceed with 'tight insert the needle when it's hot' and 'slowly withdraw the needle when it's cold'?
Simultaneously, 'rub finely' — at what point should this be combined in the process?
If these issues remain unresolved, concrete operations cannot be performed.
This also increases the research difficulty for future acupuncture masters studying these two acupuncture secrets."
Upon saying this, Lu Xuan paused, then continued: "For instance, in 'Acupuncture Elite's' song of Mountain Burning Fire: "The extremities cold counterflow is most unbearable, extreme coldness is not treated lightly, swiftly manipulate to raise Mountain Burning Fire, the patient gains peace at once."
The Heaven-piercing Cold song: "Whole body seemingly burning like fire, constantly experiencing heat above the diaphragm, if acupuncture is done according to the method, the heat toxin can be eradicated."
These two songs merely describe the symptom range and do not mention operation techniques."
Zhou Jiande looked at Lu Xuan for a long time.
Is this really just less than ten days of exposure to acupuncture?
Zhou Jiande couldn't fathom what kind of memory is required to memorize so much in less than ten days and even achieve the sensation of qi in acupuncture. Although the technique may be somewhat rough, being able to achieve the sensation of qi is already an extraordinary feat.
While Zhou Jiande was pondering how Lu Xuan accomplished this, a familiar voice rang out beside his ear again: "In 'Acupuncture Inquiry', Mountain Burning Fire is explained like this: 'The needle first enters shallow then deep, about five fen, use Nine Yang with Three Advances and Three Retreats, slow lifting and tight pressing, heat arrives, tightly close the needle hole, then the needle can be inserted, allowing heavenly qi in, earth qi out, cold can be eliminated.
Further it says: a flight and three retreats, and flies, advances thrice, forming Nine in this way.
The method is: once rapidly lift to heaven, thrice slowly press to earth, thus called rapid lift and slow press, following the press, allow the patient's heavenly qi enter, earth qi exit, carefully press to generate breath count, disease healed then stopped.
A saying states, in the Three Advances and Three Retreats, in three degrees of entry and exit, thrice forms Nine, Nine Yang means to tonify, first shallow then deep, shallow five fen, deep one cun."
And Heaven-piercing Cold is described as follows: "First deep then shallow, about one cun deep, using Six Yin with Three Exits and Three Entries, tightening and slow pressing, when cold arrives, slowly withdraw five fen, allow earth qi in, heavenly qi out, heat can be driven away.
Again it says: A flight and two retreats, so thrice, forms Three Advance Six Retreats, meaning Six Yin number.
Its method: once swiftly insert to earth, three times slowly lift to heaven, thus called rapid press slow lift, following the lift, allow patient's earth qi in, heavenly qi out, carefully press to generate breath count, disease retreats naturally. One says, one degree of Three Advances and Three Retreats, thus forming Six, Six Yin means to drain."
"However..."
Lu Xuan suddenly switched his tone and continued: "'Acupuncture Inquiry's' records coexist with verbal formulas, and there's contradiction throughout, making it unfathomable.
For instance, for Mountain Burning Fire's 'first shallow then deep', the book notes: 'Shallow five fen, deep one cun', suggesting the needle should be divided into two stages, but one saying also claims 'one retreat and three advances', clearly indicating the needle should be divided into three stages, which is contradictory.
Additionally, if you consider 'Nine Yang', it believes: 'a flight and three retreats, so thrice, forms Three Retreats Nine Advances, thus forming Nine'. It also points out: 'three advances and three retreats, in three degrees in and out, thrice forms Nine'. Hence, Nine Yang seems to refer to the number of needle insertions;
But the explanation for 'Six Yin' states: 'a flight and two retreats, (in the 'Golden Needle Poem' only a flight and three retreats are mentioned for draining, according to what is 'Acupuncture Inquiry' based), thrice, forms Three Advance Six Retreats, representing Six Yin number.' Again, it states: 'one degree of Three Advances and Three Retreats, forms Six'. The initial six number refers to withdrawal times, the latter one refers to both insertion and withdrawal times, the two explanations are not unified in calculation, and contradict the Nine Yang's computation, hence it lacks convincing power."
"Moreover...
For Mountain Burning Fire's 'slow lifting and tight pressing' and Heaven-piercing Cold's 'tighten and slow press', both are misunderstood as fast and slow needle movements, hence having 'rapid lift slow press'—Mountain Burning Fire; 'rapid press slow lift'—Heaven-piercing Cold's explanations which entirely contradict the verses.
Even if 'Acupuncture Inquiry' provides detailed records, the numerous conflicting contents also increase the difficulty of later acupuncture scholars' research, and lacks persuasion, yet these contents have offered us new insights into the secrets of Mountain Burning Fire and Heart-piercing Cold."
As Lu Xuan spoke, he noticed that the atmosphere in the acupuncture clinic had turned a bit odd, everyone was completely silent, so he turned to look at the crowd.
"How... did you remember so much content?"
Zhou Jiande's face froze, he had seen all of what Lu Xuan mentioned, but only as familiarity might go. Memorizing it was out of the question, yet what Lu Xuan just said seemed like it couldn't even have a single mistake, causing Zhou Jiande to doubt his perception.
Can a human brain really remember so much obscure and hard-to-understand content?
And Zhou Jiande's two final disciples were now totally bewildered.
Both had learned acupuncture for a while too, and had read quite a few acupuncture books, but when it came to recalling the content,
all they could do was apologize, their brains were simply not up to the task.
