Chapter 95: Judging Their Hearts (1)

Azul and Cyrus, who were sitting beside Zeir, immediately turned their heads toward him. Their eyes practically burned with jealousy and annoyance—because Roxanna suddenly wanted to kiss this cold lizard!

Meanwhile, Zeir—the main topic in Roxanna’s mind—could only stiffen in his place. He looked even more confused than the others.

All this time, he had never touched Roxanna too much because he knew she had gone through a lot of abuse from her ex-husband in the past. Therefore, he didn’t want to scare her, or make her feel uncomfortable.

Zeir knew that Roxanna had a lot of physical contact with her other husbands, and he didn’t mind at all. Besides, he didn’t see it as a competition, and he preferred to wait longer, at least until she became more comfortable around him.

"Good evening, everyone," Roxanna began. She cleared her throat a few times to get rid of all the bad thoughts in her head. "I know all of you are very tired right now, and you probably want to rest as soon as possible. But I promise this session won’t take long, so please bear with me."

The other two beastmen were Rilik, the lion beastman, and Haka, the boar beastman. Since the beginning, they had often stared at Roxanna’s husbands with cold and bitter looks. Maybe they couldn’t believe a lizard, a small bird, and a fish could stand in the same place as them.

Honestly, Roxanna couldn’t blame them, because apparently, in the beast world, size really did matter. The bigger your beast form was, the stronger you were usually seen.

But for some reason, her husbands were able to defeat the other participants even though their beast forms were not bigger than a dog.

Roxanna, on the other hand, didn’t care much about size.

[So what if they’re small?] she wondered in her head. [As long as they have skill, I think size doesn’t matter.]

Her husbands, who heard her thoughts, immediately shouted inside their hearts. ’I’m not small!’

But anyway, even though Rilik and Haka looked at her husbands bitterly, at least they didn’t do anything to harm their opponents. After all, they ended up in this place together fair and square.

"It’s alright, Leader," Rilik was the first one to speak. "We don’t feel tired at all."

Well, yeah, Roxanna could see that. They didn’t look sore, and they weren’t sleepy either. Beast stamina was really not a joke.

"Alright then," Roxanna replied with a sweet smile. And just like that, the bitterness in their hearts faded a little. "Commander Marlow and I will interview you one by one. The first person will be Azul. The rest of you can wait outside for a moment."

Azul was startled because Roxanna wanted to talk to him first. It wasn’t like he was scared of her or anything, but for some reason, the whole thing made him nervous.

Not long after, the other beastmen left the functional hut, leaving Azul behind.

Roxanna and Marlow sat next to each other, while Azul sat across from them.

"Alright, Azul," Roxanna said gently. "You don’t need to be nervous. I’m only going to ask a few simple questions."

Azul swallowed hard, trying not to show how nervous he felt. "Yes, Leader," he replied politely.

Honestly, it felt a little strange seeing her husbands act so polite in front of her. Maybe that was why employees who dated each other were usually moved to different departments.

Roxanna nodded, then glanced at Commander Marlow beside her. Marlow didn’t look strict at all. If anything, he looked almost amused, as if he had already guessed what kind of questions Roxanna was about to ask.

Roxanna leaned forward slightly, resting her hands on the table. "First question," she said. "Why do you want to become our tribe’s Commander?"

Azul blinked, caught off guard. He thought she would ask something like, ’How many enemies have you killed?’ or ’How long have you trained?’ But this... sounded more personal.

After a short pause, Azul answered honestly. "Because I don’t want to be weak anymore."

Roxanna’s expression softened. She didn’t interrupt him, so Azul continued. "In the past, I always lived in fear. I was small. I couldn’t protect myself... and I couldn’t protect anyone else either." His jaw tightened. "I hated that feeling."

Roxanna nodded again. "So you want strength."

"Yes," Azul said firmly.

"Not only for yourself," Roxanna added, "but also for others?"

Azul hesitated for half a second... then nodded. "Yes. For others too."

Roxanna smiled faintly. "Good answer." Then she continued, "Alright, you can go now."

Azul blinked several times. "Really? That’s all?"

Roxanna smiled. "Yes, that’s all."

At first, she had planned to ask many questions about what a commander should know. But then Roxanna realized that those things could be learned slowly, step by step.

That was why she ended up asking only one question, something personal, something that could clearly show what kind of person he was.

And from that question, she could guess what kind of Commander they would become in the future.

Azul looked very determined to become stronger. But deep down, it seemed like he was doing it more for himself than for protecting others.

Roxanna honestly didn’t know anything about his past, because he always claimed that he couldn’t remember anything. But somehow, she felt like he did know a little, he just didn’t say it. Maybe he wasn’t sure how to explain it, or maybe he didn’t want to talk about it yet.

Still, Roxanna believed Azul would make an excellent second-in-command. But if she was being honest... he didn’t seem truly suited to be the main commander.

Just as Azul was about to open the door, Roxanna said, "Please, call Rilik to come in."

"Alright," he replied.

The interview ended up going by very quickly, and all of them were honestly confused. Roxanna only asked one question, which made them even more nervous because they weren’t sure if their answer was enough to convince her.

Honestly, their answers weren’t very satisfying.
