I Became the Moon Goddess' Apostle in a Dark Fantasy-Chapter 43: Aftermath
Ten seconds...
This was all it took for everything around to be toppled and dozens of people to die.
Even a literal Archbishop was killed in front of his eyes.
All while he sat there, unable to follow the fight, much less do anything.
All he did was sit there and watch.
Arr!
He trembled a bit as he tried standing up, only to fail.
His legs were drained of all their energy.
He turned around to check on the duo.
They were still unconscious, but their breathing was steady.
Still, the way they were thrown, there wasn’t a guarantee they didn’t take any internal damage.
Especially Janet, since she fainted despite Pevon cushioning her fall.
He pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration as he exhaled deeply.
He couldn’t even be bothered to look at the corpses anymore.
This was bad.
And this was coming from someone like Raven.
If not for his previous life, he would’ve probably fainted a long time ago.
"Man, I just want to sleep!"
Whizz!
The turquoise streak suddenly came back, standing right where it all started.
The place where he and Jerry were standing.
The towering Knight with the white metal armor and a colossal sword on his back.
His head suddenly flicked, and he stared straight at Raven, who flinched.
His breath stuck in his throat.
"You!" He said, walking towards him at his normal pace now, his steps measured.
Raven turned pale, as blood drained from his face.
Did he figure something out?
Did he see them interacting?
Or worse, did he hear what he said to him?
"Y- Yes, Lord Inquisitor?" He stuttered.
"Right before that man attacked his grace, late Archbishop Joseph Tatus, he put something in your pocket."
’He did?’ His back was completely covered in sweat.
If he really respected him that much, why would he do that?
Was this a setup after all?
"I don’t know, Lord Inquisitor." He was ready to throw everything and beg with all his might.
As long as he gave him a painless death, he would be grateful.
Tch!
He clicked his tongue in anger, making Raven flinch again.
"Of course, you don’t know." He said, "Your eyes couldn’t even follow his movements, what makes you think you would know?"
Raven swore internally that if he were to get away with this, he would fucking kill Jerry.
He checked his pockets, and sure enough, there was something.
He doubted he could fool Lord Inquisitor, so he simply took it out and handed it to him.
He was taking in deep breaths to control his fear, to appear as innocent as possible.
Why else would he be shivering in fear, even though his mind was forcing him to?
Lord Inquisitor took the note with hasty hands and immediately started reading it.
A few seconds later,
Crumple!
He crumpled the piece of paper and clicked his tongue again.
He simply pocketed the paper and took out something from his pocket.
Raven calmed down.
Since he didn’t immediately attack him, it meant he was in the safe zone.
He didn’t think he was playing games with him, because that was not how he functioned.
He was a man of efficiency and was rather straightforward.
Nonetheless, he was curious about the note.
Just what was written on that?
"Get up!" Lord Inquisitor ordered without even looking at him, to which Raven complied.
He was somehow able to get up now.
Which meant the previous inability was more mental than anything.
"This pouch contains healing pills of different grades." He handed him the pouch he took out, and continued,
"Feed the normal ones to the ones who you deem to be lightly injured, and the golden pill to the ones who you think are seriously injured."
"And the dead ones?" He asked, curious.
Lord Inquisitor turned towards him, as if something was written over his face.
"You are surprisingly calm amidst this," He inched closer to analyse Raven better, "You weren’t lying, huh?"
Raven remembered the interview he had with him.
"I wasn’t, Lord Inquisitor." He replied in an earnest voice.
"Hmm!" He nodded, slowly going away, "I will keep that in mind."
"Just cover the faces of the dead with any light-colored cloth."
He said as he made his way through the plethora of corpses with an unsettling ease.
"As you command, Lord Inquisitor." Raven wondered if this acting would land him a role in the theatrics or not.
Because acting is all he has been doing since he arrived in this world.
Shaking his head to remove these useless thoughts, he immediately went to help others.
He couldn’t just be a sitting duck here.
...
A week later, there was a massive uproar in the entire Holy State, its ripples even hitting outside the State.
An Archbishop was killed right in the heart of his Diocese.
It raised a huge security issue and directly challenged the Church of Solis’ authority.
Last time, when Cardinal David had died, at least it was by a Cardinal, a person of an equal caliber.
But this time?
Leaks and rumors said it was a young man.
The rumors spreading like wildfire forced the Church of Solis to issue an official statement to control the damage.
The official statement was issued, where they announced something very concerning.
In this world controlled by the Church of Solis and the Churches of the other seven moons, anything related to the Church of the White Moon was akin to a nightmare.
’The fanatics who believed in a mythical, non-existent God, and only knew how to bring destruction to the world.’
And the official statement mentioned an Apostle.
The Apostle of the White Moon.
Apparently, he was already strong enough to fight an Inquisitor of the Lord rank on equal terms.
The common people were extremely anxious.
And the Church of Solis was in a frenzy.
High-level meetings were held almost every day, and the appearance of the Apostle of the White Moon forced their decision-making to quite a degree.
They finally decided to be more aggressive.
And that was when it was announced.
Recruitment for even more Arbiters.
And this time, they didn’t need a reference from someone already.
They were ready to take the risk of not being someone trusted.
They would handle it by oaths.
It was time for an open-recruitment.
And this time, leading it was an Inquisitor of an even higher level.
A Grand Inquisitor.
