Chapter 20: The Capital City’s Four Incompatibles Share a Table

Sang Zhi nodded, a hint of loneliness on his small, taut face.

Sang Yan was anxious and didn’t notice the boy’s expression. After giving a few hurried instructions, he rushed out of the Changyang Prince Mansion.

The most bustling place in the Capital City was undoubtedly Immortal’s Drunkening. The restaurant was immense, spanning five floors, and the higher one ascended, the more exclusive the clientele became, reserved for the rich and the noble.

The food was exceptional, but the restaurant’s most lauded offering was its signature wine, also called Immortal’s Drunkening. A single pot cost a thousand in gold.

It was noon, and the first floor was crowded with diners. The appearance of Qian Fanji, Zhan Chi, and Gu Shuo caused quite a stir.

Their looks were striking, and their statuses were anything but simple. Naturally, many people recognized them.

"Am I seeing things? The young master of the Zhan family, the Lord Chief of Staff, and Boss Gu are actually here to eat together?"

"My goodness, it really is them! What strange wind blew them all here?"

"Three of the Capital City’s ’Four Incompatibles’ are actually sharing a table..."

Anyone who lived in the Capital City knew of the ’Four Incompatibles.’ To see these men appear together was truly astonishing.

In a private room on the fourth floor, Sang Yan had already been waiting for some time. He spent the time carefully recalling the events in Nanyuan. Back then, Zhan Chi had gone to look for the Jade Pendant, and their group had gotten separated afterward.

When they regrouped, all four of them were severely injured. They had been sent out from Fuhua Cave, but to this day, Sang Yan still didn’t know who had brought them back.

At the time, their answers had been vague and evasive, and he hadn’t pressed them on it afterward.

"Your Highness, they have arrived." A knock sounded at the door.

"Come in." Sang Yan reined in his thoughts.

The men entered the private room and bowed to Sang Yan in greeting.

"There are no outsiders here. No need for such formalities. Please, sit." Sang Yan’s gaze swept over the three men’s faces.

Zhan Chi and the others took their seats.

They all knew why they were here today, so a heavy silence fell over the room once they were seated.

Seeing that no one was speaking, Sang Yan looked around before taking the Jade Pendant from his robes and placing it in the center of the table.

"An old man and a child have come to the Changyang Prince Mansion seeking a relative. This Jade Pendant is the token they brought. What do you make of it?"

The sight of the Jade Pendant made anger smolder within Zhan Chi, and his expression turned foul.

Qian Fanji was known for his even temper, but his expression was grim, and his handsome face was unusually pale.

"The Jade Pendant was lost back then. Someone probably found it and is now just trying to extort some money," Gu Shuo said, appearing quite composed.

"Before she passed away, the little girl’s mother said the child’s father was a nobleman from the imperial city of Beili. My Imperial Father found this Jade Pendant during his travels years ago. If you didn’t already know its origins, you would never guess it came from Beili." Sang Yan already had his own suspicions.

"In that case, someone must be pulling the strings. Your Highness ought to investigate this thoroughly," Gu Shuo said, his expression impassive and his tone tinged with indolence. 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"Exactly. If I find out who’s behind this, I’ll skin them alive," Zhan Chi seethed, his heart blazing with anger.

Qian Fanji remained silent.

Sang Yan wasn’t flustered. "The five of us grew up together," he began, his voice unhurried. "We were like-minded, always drinking and talking, sharing our dreams. We yearned for a life of adventure—of fine clothes and spirited horses, of roaming the world with our swords. That’s why we went to Nanyuan together."

As they listened to Sang Yan speak, strange expressions flickered across their faces. They had set out on an adventure together back then. If it hadn’t been for that incident in Nanyuan, it would have been the most carefree time of their lives.

Gu Shuo idly toyed with his cup.

’This whole affair with the child has nothing to do with me, not by a single Silver Coin. A little girl? Hah. The Gu family doesn’t produce girls.’
