I Became My Healer Elf Character-Chapter 134: Posturing
The money obtained from Maxine was enough to stay in a hotel room for several weeks. Hikari didn't intend to stay that long. Eventually, she would fly herself to Japan. It was just a matter of time. But before she could do that, the group were approached by the FBI.
It was only a couple days after they started staying in the hotel when there was a knock on the door. Hikari opened it, and two men in black suits stood in the doorway. The elf sniffed the air, hoping that the two guys could not smell what the group had been doing. At this point, Hikari was teaching them all about Earth, and in return, they were using her body. Well, all of them except for the fairy goddess. After a couple of days, she'd disappeared back to the weave.
The closest of the men flashed a golden badge from the chain around his neck that read FBI. He scrutinized the girl before him. "Are you Hikari? What's your surname?"
Hikari shrugged. "That's none of your business. I might not be from America, but I have seen enough television to know that I have rights."
The agent shook his head. "You can't get an understanding of our rights from television, and the rights granted to citizens is much different from those who are foreign nationals. I'll need to see your passports, and you'll need to come with me."
Hikari sighed and slipped on some slippers she'd bought while she was in New York. She gestured to the girls behind her with a wave of her hand. "They're coming with me too. Otherwise, I won't go."
The agent laughed. "You're really in no position to say that, but I'll allow it. As for the passports…"
Hikari shrugged. "We don't have any passports. Just take us to your agency already. If you treat us kindly, we will do the same. If not...Well, it might not be a pleasant experience for you."
The man flinched. Something about Hikari's demeanor made him shrink in his uniform. He looked to the other agent for help, but the man said nothing. It seems he'd been thinking of something on his own.
"I don't get paid enough for this. Don't worry. You'll be treated fairly so long as you answer some of our questions. And don't worry about the passports. Our boss told us that something like this would happen."
The two agents led them downstairs to a long black limousine that was parked outside. It looked like one of those from the famous 007 movies that Hikari had once seen. There was an entourage of police cars on either side of the street, barricading and sectioning of this one from the others.
Hikari watched the second agent open a door for them and gladly took a seat in the back. In the very last row, there were two long booths for sitting, and the agents sat across from the women.
Syndra clutched Hikari's hand tightly and nervously, whispering into her ear. "This is crazy. Why would the FBI be after us? You think they figured something out?"
The elf shook her head. "I doubt it. This is probably my fault…"
"Meaning?"
"They have to follow the origin of that gold. I imagine it took longer because they couldn't find that it was stolen from anywhere. They probably began an investigation, and…"
"And?"
"We'll just have to see what they say."
The car began moving, and Kurayami found her voice at the same time. "Wow, these cars drive much better than those carriages."
Hikari struggled to not start laughing. She looked at the dragon girl, thinking how odd she must seem to the agents. Her tail curled down her side, and the two horns on her head would seem entirely real to someone standing close enough for a while. They came directly out of her head, and Hikari doubted that even the best makeup artist in the world could create such a pristine look.
Even if they did, the look would eventually fade away. Sweat and wear would make the makeup come off over time, but she always looks like this.
Hikari decided to address the two agents. "I think I have some idea of why your agency wants to talk to me, but I assure you that none of that gold was stolen."
The agent nodded. "We already figured that out. We contacted other agencies across the world, and there was not a single match in any database."
"You two did that in two days?"
"No, it was a whole department working on it. Anyway, we also observed you. We took a look at footage from the street cameras, and we referenced all of them. Eventually, we formed a grid where all of the cameras had seen you."
Hikari frowned, not liking where this conversation was going.
And the agent pressed onward. "Guess what, you never came from the airport at all. Rather, all of the data saw you appearing in that alleyway. Why is that? How did you even get there?"
Hikari smiled wryly. The agency had completely figured them out already. Now, they were trying to find out where they came from and likely if they were a threat.
"Would you believe me if I said I'm a goddess?"
Agent Thomson shook his head. "What is that supposed to mean? Is this some kind of joke? No, we're wondering how you got here from Japan? Are our allies hiding secrets from us?"
Hikari chuckled. "It's just like mortals to not believe the truth even when they hear it. How about this...Once we arrive at your bureau, I will prove to your team that I am what I say I am."
Agent Thomson sighed and slumped in his seat. "This is no joking matter. Our national security, and the national security of other nations depends on this. Please don't make our jobs harder than it needs to be."
"You're the ones making your jobs harder than it needs to be. If you had just waited a few more days, I'd have been completely out of your hair. Now, we have to go through all of this because of a misunderstanding. When your agency is proven to be entirely wrong, I will demand compensation." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
Hikari grinned smugly at the defeated agent. In reality, this was the easiest way for her to get a payday. Moreover, she could make other demands. She would definitely demand a passport for Maxine and plane tickets to Japan. Rather than stressing about the situation, Hikari found herself growing even more relaxed.
Syndra fed off of her energy and leaned her head against the elven goddess, and Ayase did the same thing on the other side of her.
The trip became silent, until they finally reached the tall skyscraper that was the FBI agency. They arrived with their police escort, looking like some big shots, but the people around the street were all agents that had no reaction. They were well-disciplined.
Hikari and her group were led through two sliding doors, and a bunch of other agents quickly ran up and surrounded them. They all walked straight towards an elevator at the end of the hall, and they all piled in. Or at least, as many that could fit.
The thing went up several floors, beeping at each one past. The group went up 41 stories, finally arriving at the top floor.
They were greeted with a carpeted room and several big shots surrounding a large black table. On the walls, there were insignias of different branches of the US military, and on one wall there was a large black screen.
The room had no windows, and the brown walls were utterly plain, except for the emblems. An old man in a blue and white suit smiled at them and stood. He saluted the two agents that led them here, and those agents made their exit.
"I'm General Samuel Quarter of the US Army, and these are my friends from other agencies." He gestured towards a group of the black rolling chairs around the table and smiled. "Please, take a seat."
Hikari obliged the request, and the others followed her lead. Though, she could tell that Mizuko and Kurayami were growing more frustrated, especially the latter. She looked bored and flopped onto Hikari's lap instead.
The general looked surprised by the action, but he said nothing. "Now, there are some things we need to address before we can start the interview. First thing is that everything we say is being recorded. This interview will be relayed back to the president of our nation, so we urged that you uphold etiquette at all time."
Hikari nodded and looked at the silly dragon on her lap. She wrapped her arms around Kurayami's stomach and whispered. "What do you think? Should we uphold etiquette."
"Master…"
Hikari pinched the side of Kurayami's tummy.
"Hikari, these people are already presuming themselves as greater than you. They're trying to pressure you with useless posturing. I say that you return the same respect they've given you..."
