Chapter 84: Chapter 83: Cai Bo Makes a Phone Call

The aggrieved little fellow, Song Chengguang, walked out of his bedroom and into the slightly ajar master bedroom. After surveying the room and not finding his parents, he started to panic, "Mom?" Just as he tilted his head back, prepared to cry out loud, he spotted what appeared to be his dad playing under the covers on the bed, "Dad!" he called out with a hint of surprise in his voice.

Because his dad was so tall, the blanket couldn’t cover his big feet - a giveaway that clever Chengguang noticed. He proudly thought to himself, oblivious to the fact that his call had startled both Song Yuanhuan and Xu Xiuxiu, who were confronting each other under the covers.

Caught in bed by their son, the awkwardness was somewhat indescribable. Xu Xiuxiu, embarrassed and unsure what to do, angrily grabbed Song Yuanhuan’s ears, "It’s all your fault." Xu Xiuxiu growled in a low voice, annoyed like a small cat, baring her teeth and swiping at Song Yuanhuan.

And there was Song Yuanhuan, who had been planning a bout of morning exercise with Xu Xiuxiu, but upon hearing his son’s call, his face immediately darkened. Could someone please be a dear and drag away this son who’s interrupting my private moment? This son – I’ll generously give him away!

While thinking, Song Yuanhuan looked down at the embarrassed Xu Xiuxiu, curved his lips into a smile letting his heart lead him as he leaned in and kissed her, completely ignoring the fact that his ears were still pinched in her hands, burning hot.

"Dad?" Song Chengguang, after calling out and not getting a response from Song Yuanhuan, puzzledly stood on tiptoes trying to scratch the itch on those big feet. Due to his height, though, he failed and gave up.

"Daddy, Chengguang’s cold." Song Chengguang, dragging his clothes and trousers, wearing only a thin undershirt and little underwear, was now exposing his plump, white, and tender short legs. Because of the cold weather, the little guy started to feel aggrieved standing barefoot on the freezing floor.

My feet are so cold!

Cold? Xu Xiuxiu, hidden under the covers, remembered that the little guy had gone to bed wearing only underwear the night before. Suddenly worried sick, she wondered, could it be that he hadn’t put on clothes and trousers yet?

"I’ll go, you hurry and get dressed." Song Yuanhuan, in a rush, grabbed Xu Xiuxiu who was about to lift the blanket while naked, and then teasingly slid down under the covers. Xu Xiuxiu desperately tried to stop him but couldn’t, and could only let Song Yuanhuan have another taste of her "tofu" against her will.

"Dad." Song Chengguang smiled with a little pout when he saw Song Yuanhuan emerge from the blanket.

As soon as Song Yuanhuan left the blanket, he saw Song Chengguang holding up his little underwear, and noticing his son’s aggrieved expression, and seeing his tender, white legs shaking in the cold winter’s air, Song Yuanhuan just couldn’t bring himself to be stern with him. He bent down and scooped up the little guy, "Let’s go, dad will take you back to your room to get dressed."

"Mhm." As long as Song Yuanhuan was at home, he would dress Song Chengguang, which Chengguang was quite accustomed to. He happily allowed his dad to carry him away, his little hand clutching his clothes and pants, not feeling the slightest distance despite not having seen his dad for a long time.

Hiding under the covers, Xu Xiuxiu was all ears for the sounds outside, and then she stealthily poked her head out, only to meet Song Yuanhuan’s meaningful glance before he closed the door. Biting her red lips indignantly, Xu Xiuxiu glared back at him resentfully, and then took the opportunity as the door shut to quickly wiggle out of the blankets and get dressed.

By the time Song Yuanhuan had dressed Song Chengguang in the secondary bedroom, Xu Xiuxiu had also gotten ready and started washing her face and brushing her teeth. Soon, the family of three sat quietly at the dining table to eat breakfast.

After the meal, due to his new position, Song Yuanhuan left early, donning his military uniform and stepping out the door.

With nothing to do, Xu Xiuxiu had just finished tidying up the dishes and was pondering how to spend the day when a signal soldier from the communications battalion knocked on her door, saying that there was an urgent phone call for her.

After Xu Xiuxiu hurried to answer the call, she learned that the caller was Brother Cai, Cai Bo. He said that Cai Qingqing wasn’t doing well and was muttering about wanting to see Aunt Xiu Xiu. Heartbroken, Cai Bo had called Xu Xiuxiu, hoping she would find time to visit Cai Qingqing.

Upon hearing it concerned Qingqing, Xu Xiuxiu agreed without hesitation. She turned and went back home, taking her son to find Yuanhuan. After dropping the child with him, she rushed to the city hospital by car.

Walking down the cold, quiet corridors of the hospital, Xu Xiuxiu felt increasingly timid with every step, as if walking on cotton, until she stood outside Room 302. Listening at the slightly ajar door, the quietness from within startled her.

"Brother Cai, Sister-in-law Cai..." Xu Xiuxiu pushed the door to the sickroom open and saw Cai Bo standing in front of Bed No. 3 with a somber and grave expression. Sister-in-law Cai silently wept, cradling a plain rabbit plush doll in her arms, her other hand trembling as she caressed the still small hand of Cai Qingqing. The little girl, with eyes tightly shut and a fearful pallor, lay quietly as if breathless, a sight that filled Xu Xiuxiu with ominous foreboding.

"Sister-in-law, you’ve come." Xu Xiuxiu’s call startled the serious-looking Cai Bo, a flash of gratitude crossing his face swiftly replaced by overwhelming sorrow moments later.

"How is Qingqing?" Xu Xiuxiu stepped forward to ask, her breathing tightening as she saw Sister-in-law Cai, worn and grief-stricken, momentarily distracted by her appearance.

The sickroom was very quiet. Cai Bo stood rigidly to one side in silence, Sister-in-law Cai choking back tears, her wrinkled hands tightly holding Cai Qingqing’s little hand. The pervasive sense of deep sorrow emanating from her figure was startling.

Xu Xiuxiu’s heart descended into chaos, and after a long silence in the room, Cai Bo finally spoke with a bitter tone, "Qingqing... she’s gone." Saying this, he raised his hand to the corner of his eye with his thumb, wiping away a tear, trying hard not to cry out loud. A robust man, who had never flinched or shed a tear even when shot amid the Golden Triangle’s drug traffickers, now faced the departure of his daughter. Seeing his wife crying soundlessly in agony, how could Cai Bo remain indifferent?

Gone?!

Xu Xiuxiu stared in horror at the little figure on the bed. The little girl lay there quietly, unresponsive to Sister-in-law Cai’s pitiful and intense weeping, her frail body devoid of any breath or movement, just lying there silently...

Upon this realization, Xu Xiuxiu’s emotions instantly became turbulent. She, standing, felt dizzy and staggered several steps before steadying herself. Her beautiful eyes, fixed dully on the small girl’s peaceful face on the bed, as tears uncontrollably slid down.
