Chapter 108: Chapter 107: The Clever Girl

Mrs. Xu, worried about her fourth daughter, had been sitting at the village convenience store waiting for a call back from Xu Xiuxiu for half the day. When she finally heard the phone ring and realized it was indeed for her, she immediately grabbed it. As soon as she heard that the fourth daughter had safely arrived, her fear subsided and she quickly became harsh, "Sanya, don’t indulge Si Ya, have her stay there for more days. Have her do all the hard and dirty work. If she dares to throw a fit, just buy her a train ticket and toss her onto the train. I’ll pick her up from the train station here; she’s grown enough not to get lost anyway."

If it weren’t for the fact that she and her husband hadn’t monitored properly, the fourth daughter wouldn’t have run away in the middle of the night. Although Mrs. Xu spoke harshly, she genuinely hoped that the fourth daughter would stay with their third daughter for a while; otherwise, given her personality, who knew what trouble she would cause at her eldest sister’s house! Learning about the actual situation of the cousin introduced by the eldest daughter through the letter left by the fourth daughter, Mrs. Xu naturally wished that she would stay longer with the third daughter, to avoid chaos at home.

"Mom, don’t worry! I’ll keep an eye on her," Xu Xiuxiu assured Mrs. Xu. After comforting her thoroughly, she finally hung up the phone.

When she looked up, she saw Jingjing grinning and peering over, "How was it? Did mom talk smack about me again?" Jingjing seemed quite aware of it.

"Nonsense, with your sneaky ways, if she doesn’t complain about you, who would she complain about?" Xu Xiuxiu said, jokingly poking Jingjing’s head, knowing well that her sister was quite cunning.

"Tch, as if I’m naive. Isn’t she just afraid you’ll send me back home to deal with Xu Fangfang’s trouble? Wants me to stay here with you to cool off, right? Otherwise, she would’ve called me back already. What did she say when I insisted on coming to City Z? That I’d just be a burden to you." Jingjing was so upset that she even stopped referring to Xu Fangfang with familial terms.

"Isn’t it a burden?" Xu Xiuxiu nodded in agreement, but she couldn’t deny that Jingjing had completely figured out Mrs. Xu’s intentions.

"Hmph." Jingjing snorted in frustration, "You really are my dear sister!" Her tone was full of disdain and disappointment. Xu Xiuxiu found this amusing, as her sister could convey so many meanings in a single sentence, "Come on! Stop arguing with me and let’s go pick up your little nephew."

Jingjing pouted her red lips in discontent, but still followed Xu Xiuxiu out of Sichuan Pavilion. By the time they had walked some distance, Jingjing’s anger seemed to have dissipated, and she playfully hooked her arm through Xu Xiuxiu’s, "Sis, you’re really impressive to have opened such a big restaurant." Jingjing said, a sense of shared honor in her voice.

This person was her third sister, whom she had heavily criticized! Who would have thought that once she got married, she had become so capable. Among the four sisters, she was now the most comfortable, far from their emperor-like father and not even needing to take care of in-laws, enjoying whatever she wanted in City Z.

"Don’t think it was easy; I struggled a lot in the beginning!" Xu Xiuxiu didn’t feel like discussing Sichuan Pavilion in detail.

Even if they were the best of sisters, money could easily lead to jealousy and resentment, especially since her relationship with Jingjing wasn’t great to begin with. Now, their current rapport had essentially been bought, which made it fragile and easily broken over financial issues.

"Alright, stop beating around the bush with me. I’m not Xu Fangfang, and I couldn’t care less about that restaurant of yours," Jingjing, lively as ever and still rather upset, responded to Xu Xiuxiu. Just arrived, she followed Xu Xiuxiu around, stopping here and there, asking about this and that, completely fascinated. By the time the two reached Hope Kindergarten, they had arrived just on time.

Xu Xiuxiu and Xu Jingjing were waiting at the entrance of the kindergarten, and there were quite a few other adults who had come to pick up children. They all stood at the entrance, craning their necks just like parents picking up their children from school in later generations.

"Jie, I see our Cheng Guang over there!" Xu Jingjing kept leaning into the kindergarten, looking until she saw a kindergarten teacher come out with five children; the youngest one, who was wobbling down the hall, was her adorable little nephew, with a backpack on his back. He looked just as cute as Xu Jingjing had imagined.

"Goodness! Third sister, seeing our family’s Cheng Guang makes me want to have kids too." Xu Jingjing blurted out.

"Look at you, when the family set you up on a blind date, you ran off in the dark. Yet now you’re thinking about having kids. As a young woman, how can you say such things? Kids aren’t something you can just have because you want to. Stay put, if you’re not well-behaved, I’ll send you back home first thing tomorrow morning." Xu Xiuxiu slapped the nearby girl’s shoulder playfully, half-threatening her.

Really, this girl wasn’t the obedient type. Well, coming over to play for a while was fine by her, Xu Xiuxiu, as an older sister, welcomed it. However, should something inappropriate occur, how would she explain it to the family at home? Thinking this, Xu Xiuxiu became even more determined to keep a good watch over Xu Jingjing; she absolutely couldn’t let her run wild.

"I know, I know! You’re starting to nag more and more just like our mom!" Xu Jingjing pouted in feigned grievance and dashed forward to the small gate of the kindergarten.

"Little auntie." Song Chengguang’s memory was getting better with time. The little guy remembered his aunt who would play with him at his grandmother’s house during the New Year and, upon seeing Xu Jingjing standing in front with his teacher’s guidance, he politely smiled at her.

"Wow! Little aunt’s Cheng Guang is so well-behaved. Come here, let your aunt give you a hug." Xu Jingjing waved to Song Chengguang.

"No, Cheng Guang wants Mommy’s hug." Song Chengguang shook his head seriously and then adorably stood there, stretching out his little hand towards Xu Xiuxiu behind Xu Jingjing: "Mommy."

Xu Xiuxiu’s heart melted at the sight, and she stepped forward to wrap her son in her arms.

After picking up Song Chengguang, the two each held one of his little hands and leisurely made their way home. Later, Xu Xiuxiu even took Xu Jingjing to the vegetable market where Xu Jingjing, curious, pointed out several fresh vegetables she had never eaten before, even drooling enough to convince Xu Xiuxiu to buy a roast duck!

Song Chengguang also had a thing for meat. Normally, Xu Xiuxiu controlled the boy’s meat and vegetable intake strictly, but today, because Xu Jingjing was around, she was a bit more lenient. They ate voraciously; chopsticks fluttered back and forth across the dinner table - Song Chengguang, awkward with chopsticks, even resorted to using his hands, to Xu Xiuxiu’s wide-eyed amusement.

By the end, the fairly large roast duck wasn’t spared much by Xu Xiuxiu; she managed to nibble on just two little wings, while Xu Jingjing and Song Chengguang ate the rest. Then, both moaning and holding their waists, they walked back and forth in the hall to digest.
