I Am the Sweetheart of Mr. CEO-Chapter 585 - 583: The Truth about Amnesia (1)
As they were talking, Kris Cooper and Vera Wave arrived at the parking lot at the foot of the mountain. They got into their separate cars, and Vera suddenly cried out in surprise.
"Huh, where’s my wallet?"
Kris Cooper remained calm. Ever since he had met her, he had grown accustomed to her forgetfulness.
"Don’t worry, you probably just forgot it."
"No, I remember clearly. I had it in my hand when we got out of the car..." She thought for a moment, then hurriedly pushed open her car door. "It must be at my father’s tombstone."
Kris Cooper reached out, grabbed her wrist, and pulled her back into her seat. "You wait in the car. I’ll go!"
The round trip up the mountain wasn’t short. Instead of both of them making the climb again, it was better for him to go alone.
"Should I come with you?"
"No need!" The man closed her car door and, not forgetting to remind her, circled to her side. "Lock the doors and don’t open them for anyone but me. I’ll be back soon!"
Turning around, he strode back to the cemetery. He followed the mountain path to Vera’s parents’ tombstones and, sure enough, saw her clutch leaning against the side of the tombstone. She had probably left it there accidentally when she paid her respects earlier.
He picked up the wallet, turned, and started down the mountain. When he reached a fork in the road, he saw an elderly female cleaner carrying a bamboo basket on her back, with a bouquet of flowers in her arms.
Seeing this, he politely stepped aside to let her pass.
The female cleaner seemed eager to talk and struck up a conversation as she continued down the mountain.
"People these days are so wasteful. They just throw away such lovely flowers!"
Kris Cooper hadn’t paid much attention at first, but a glance at the flowers in her hand gave him a start.
Those flowers look familiar.
Because Vera had injured her hand, he had carried all three bouquets up the mountain. Therefore, he remembered very clearly: the bouquet the cleaner was holding looked identical to the one Vera had placed before Brandy Leafcastle’s father’s tomb.
"Ma’am, where did you find these flowers?"
"Up there on the mountain..." The cleaner turned and pointed uphill.
Kris Cooper turned to look where she pointed. Her finger indicated the direction of Brandy Leafcastle’s father’s tombstone.
Something clicked. He stopped in his tracks, turned, and started back up the mountain.
"Sir, you’re going the wrong way! The exit is this way!"
The cleaner kindly reminded him, but he just waved his hand and quickened his pace, hurrying back up the mountain.
When he returned to the top, he saw Liliana Davis through the trees, wiping her eyes with a handkerchief as she walked down. He quickly slipped into the woods.
After a moment, Liliana Davis and her assistant walked past the edge of the woods. Once they were further away, he emerged from the trees and went to Brandy Leafcastle’s tomb.
In front of the tombstone, only a single bouquet of flowers leaned against it. Kris Cooper had seen this bouquet before; it had already been there when he and Vera arrived, undoubtedly left by Liliana Davis. However, the bouquet Vera had placed there was gone.
He looked away from the tombstone towards Liliana Davis, who was now almost at the foot of the mountain. Kris Cooper’s brow furrowed.
When the cleaner passed by, Liliana Davis must have still been at the tombstone. That means the cleaner couldn’t have secretly taken the flowers. They must have been thrown away.
Throwing away flowers given with good intentions... no matter how he thought about it, such an act was wrong.
His gaze fell upon the parking lot at the foot of the mountain. Kris Cooper turned and sprinted downhill. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
He rushed all the way down the mountain and back to the parking lot. From a distance, he saw a car pulling away. He jogged quickly to their car and found Vera Wave sitting safely in the passenger seat.
Seeing he had been gone for a while, Vera was holding her phone in one hand, about to call him.
