Chapter 583: Chapter 581: The Crying Woman

Kris Cooper stepped forward, bending to place his hands on her shoulders. "Your uncle wouldn’t want to see you upset. Cheer up!"

Regaining her composure, Vera Wave stood up and leaned against him. She took his handkerchief to wipe her nose, and her tone brightened. "Dad, this is Kris. I picked a good son-in-law, didn’t I?"

Running his fingers through her hair, Kris Cooper looked at the photograph on the tombstone—a man who had also once been a distinguished figure. "Uncle Wave, rest assured, I’ll take good care of Vera and Grandma. You and Auntie can be at peace."

After lingering for a while at the gravesite, Vera Wave pulled out a few small weeds sprouting nearby. Then she stood up and left with Kris Cooper.

Noticing the remaining bouquet in her hand, Kris Cooper asked curiously, "Are you going to visit someone else?"

"I’m going to visit Uncle Leafcastle," Vera Wave replied, leading him down a small path toward another section. "He’s also buried here."

Kris Cooper nodded, not asking any further questions. He didn’t need to ask; he knew she was referring to Nathan Leafcastle’s father.

The Leafcastle and Wave families had been close for generations. After Mr. Leafcastle’s death, it was Walter Wave who had helped arrange the funeral. And regardless of how busy he was, Walter would always find time to visit Mr. Leafcastle’s grave on Tomb Sweeping Day or the anniversaries of his birth and death.

Now that Walter was gone, Vera kept this tradition alive in her heart and never forgot.

Although it wasn’t any special occasion this time, since they were already here, it felt only right to pay him a visit.

As they rounded a distant grove of trees, Vera Wave looked up and let out a soft gasp.

"What’s wrong?" Kris asked.

"It looks like someone’s there!" Vera exclaimed, pointing to a gravestone not far off. "That’s Uncle Leafcastle’s grave."

Kris Cooper looked up. Through a screen of trees and bushes, he could indeed see the faint silhouette of a figure standing before a tombstone.

From a distance, all they could make out was a woman in a black dress; the intervening trees obscured a clearer view.

"I wonder who that could be?" Vera murmured, quickening her pace.

Nathan Leafcastle was an only child, and his father, Mr. Leafcastle, had no siblings. Considering previous family disputes, who would have come to visit his grave?

Moments later, they had rounded the grove and were not far from Mr. Leafcastle’s grave.

Now they could see clearly. A woman was indeed kneeling before Mr. Leafcastle’s tombstone. She wore a black dress, her long hair tied back, and was half-kneeling on the grass. Though they were some distance away, they could see her shoulders shaking; she was clearly crying. Her fingers clutched the tombstone tightly, conveying intense emotion.

Perhaps hearing their footsteps, the woman in black quickly wiped her face twice, then put the glasses she’d been holding back on. Only then did she stand up and slowly turn towards them.

When they saw who it was, both parties were surprised.

"Auntie Davis?" Vera exclaimed.

The woman kneeling in front of Mr. Leafcastle’s grave was none other than Nathan Leafcastle’s mother, Liliana Davis.

Although she had wiped her tears, the distinct redness of her eyes behind her glasses and the still-damp tear tracks on her face proved she had just been crying—and quite heavily.

Her assistant stood not far away.

Vera and Kris hadn’t noticed her assistant, Linda, earlier because of the intervening trees.

Kris Cooper had met both these women before, so they were not strangers to him.

Seeing Vera holding a bouquet, standing with Kris Cooper, a strange glint flashed in Liliana Davis’s eyes. "What... are you two doing here?" 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

Her tone was noticeably displeased.
