Chapter 27 - Going for the Entrance Exam

After sorting out the corpses and other businesses, the trio left the underworld using Green's preparations and arrived in the dark room of the Apothecary

People were monitoring us to the end... I wonder if being observed by that many people is normal...

Jules quietly pondered as he sat at the table.

With their business concluded, Finn gave the two a nod. "Mr. Veil. Mr. Faceless. Till we meet again."

He left without waiting for their response.

Jules, who had been waving as the short guy left, suddenly chuckled.

"I guess that name will stick!"

Still reeling from what he was called, Ryan exclaimed, "That was my chance at a cool name—and you ruined it!"

Jules chuckled more as Ryan continued.

"No, no! It's not too late! It's just one person that knows me as that..." He glared at Jules, "You! Don't spoil my reputation with your warped humor!"

Jules shrugged. "If you do well enough, people will term you with another name."

"That's true!" Ryan was about to list Noctharis warriors with titles he liked, but stopped because of their location.

"Anyways, I'll see you later. We'll meet as planned to collect your ID in a few days," Jules said.

Ryan agreed, "Alright. I have places to be so bye."

"Bye, Mr. Faceless," Jules said teasingly.

"You're even more annoying beneath the mask," Ryan muttered as he decided to ignore Jules.

Jules watched him leave then said aloud in the dark room, "Investigate Finn's recent activities."

After a while, a voice rang from an unknown location. "Okay."

Dropping a bunch of coins on the table, the masked Jules chuckled as he left.

December 31st, Year 241 – 11:57 p.m.

The last day of the Year.

It's been over a month since Jules arrived in this world.

He sat by the window of his rented room, distant fireworks blooming silently in the night sky.

Pencil in hand, he sketched without thinking—shapes of fire, fragments of memory, and half-formed runes.

"This time last year..." Jules muttered, voice low. "I was practicing fire spells... thinking about Mother."

He stopped drawing.

Then quietly smiled.

January 3rd, Year 242.

Dressed in a plain long-sleeved brown tunic, black trousers, and sturdy boots, Jules stepped off a transport cab just outside the Inner Circle—territory of the Institute.

Using the map he had gotten earlier, he made his way to the testing halls.

At one point, he saw a large crowd moving towards his destination, so he just followed them.

As he approached the testing halls, the crowd thickened.

Dozens of youths, many his age, but of all kinds—some with pointed ears, others with animal ears or short stature—cluttered the entryway.

By now, he had seen various races, so he wasn't particularly impressed and entered swiftly.

Still, am I getting too many stares for a guy who's supposed to be plain?!

Standing in a corner of the hallway, lit by high-set windows and chandeliers, Jules closed his eyes—to avoid their stares!

The last time someone stared at him so intently, he ended up with broken bones and swollen parts. It was his Crazy Mother!

Damn. Who knew being handsome would be such a problem?

It wasn't strength that drew eyes—his core stage was only Light Orange. That wasn't rare. No one here could tell he had a Skill or a Heart, so...

Ah, it could also be War's beauty calling them.

Jules was talking about the long blacksword he was holding. The blade seemed to react to his compliment, pulsing faintly.

Well, I'll be entering soon so I don't have to worry about them.

Most had arrived early to scope out the competition or gather hints about the test. Jules, however, didn't bother

He transmigrated into this world—that was his true advantage.

The exam content for the first two of the five days was the same. Finn took his exam on the evening of the second day, while Jules took his that morning.

His group started their exams in a few minutes, so his name could be called at any moment from now.

During this period, Jules ignored the outside world and simulated his exam in his head.

Soon, he was called in.

With an exhale, he walked past the double door into a hall made of plated stones.

Its ceiling was high up—lit by bulbs—and was mostly empty.

At the other end of the hall was a long C-shaped table.

There were four individuals seated behind the table, but what drew his attention was a beast.

It was a tiger-like creature about six feet long, with white fur and black stripes. Its shimmering blue eyes were directed at Jules, making him feel as if his soul was an open book.

The headmistress's beast... Is this what it feels like to be under her gaze? This is one of the strongest beings in the world...

According to the novel, breaking the intimidation of the beast was a form of hidden test and Jules broke out of it easily to his surprise.

Then, he noticed other individuals that were in the room. They were three and Jules knew them to be sophomores.

A male stood at one side of the table with a wooden sword in his hand while at the other side, a female stood with her hands placed at her back.

The other male stood at the door.

They were all dressed in the Institute's grey and gold uniform.

Amongst the ones seated, a woman with green hair and brown eyes named Abigail Peru, said, "Jules?"

"You are correct."

"Alright," She replied. "Your exam goes like this: You are too cut the rope that binds that scroll to that hanger."

Not far from the table stood a tall, slender stand with a single arm jutting out horizontally.

A thin yet sturdy rope extended down from the arm, tied around a scroll that exuded a subtle wave of mana.

The distance between Jules and the stand was about 10 meters.

Hearing this, other people might let their guard down. Even Finn found it shocking.

Another examiner, a tall man with brown skin, a bald head, and upward-pointing fangs protruding from his lower jaw, added:

"This young man here will try his best to stop you without using any mana. That's it. Begin when you're ready."

Without hesitation, Jules unraveled the wrap around his sword.

He attacked immediately.
