I Am Extraordinary Alone-Chapter 644 - 642: The Living Dead
Chapter 644: Chapter 642: The Living Dead
East Continent, at the border between Chicken Snake Country and Yin Country.
A large troop-carrying helicopter was flying at low altitude, its belly rapidly brushing over the lush green jungle, with the sandy yellow Divine Might Mountain not far ahead.
Leng Kai, holding an ICR rifle, sat at the doorway looking down. The hidden camp was nearby, and he was following a four-person squad from the Demon Marine Corps to meet with the local surviving resistance organization.
Chicken Snake Country was the first region in the East Continent to fall, and according to the intelligence they had, its ruler was Yaha, the leader of the Black House from over twenty years ago.
This area was not within that red domain, so several weeks of reconnaissance had not revealed a trace of His army. However, there were other troubles here.
Zombies.
These zombies were terrifying. They retained the consciousness and memories from before their death, and there was no discernible difference from living humans. But after a few days, their dead bodies began to show signs of decay, including livor mortis and fluid leakage. However, the zombies seemed unconcerned or even unaware of the decomposition of their bodies, and they continuously urged the living to join them.
Through an ancient shortwave radio, they had received signals from the guerrilla fighters and, after several contacts over the radio, part of the Demon Marine Corps dispatched a four-person team and twelve regular human soldiers for contact.
Leng Kai was the team leader of this squad, but the four marine team members were not under his command. They retained discretionary power to decide whether or not to engage in battle.
After the helicopter landed in the woods, two guides from Chicken Snake Country led them through the forest to their camp in a marshland area. The resistance force was small, about 20 people, with 12 women who were fairly young, the oldest appearing to be in her forties, and the remaining eight men were generally older, mostly elderly, with the eldest looking nearly 70 years old.
The camp’s female leader was named Ming Yueqing, 39 years old, with brown skin and a slightly stout build, already a mother of two. However, Yaha’s arrival had turned her husband into one of the zombies, and her two sons had been taken away.
The humid and hot swamp in the woods was not ideal for setting up camp. The camp was built with various chopped wood, branches, and vines. If there were a downpour, it might destroy the place.
Leng Kai walked into the tent and saw the radio was powered by two car batteries, which were placed on the only table in the camp.
"How have you managed to hold out?" Leng Kai asked, somewhat surprised.
"There’s food and water in the forest, so surviving isn’t that hard," Ming Yueqing replied.
Her face looked tired, but her tone was firm. When she looked at Leng Kai, there seemed to be a hint of questioning in her eyes.
"Which unit are you from? I’ve never heard of the Human Alliance Army. I thought you were from the United Council or Yin Country," Ming Yueqing asked.
"We used to be, but now we’re on our own. Yin Country has fallen as well," Leng Kai replied.
"Yin Country has fallen as well?! We thought... we were still planning to seek revenge and then flee to Yin Country..." Ming Yueqing was clearly unaware of the situation outside.
"Don’t think too much... the situation outside isn’t much better than here. His army has already swallowed up most of the world, with no way out to the north or east. On our flight here, we traveled through uninhabited zones," Leng Kai said.
"Do you have confidence in killing Yaha?" Ming Yueqing asked straightforwardly.
Leng Kai glanced behind him where four tall Demon Marine Corps members were standing by outside the camp.
"Our ultimate goal is to kill Him, that Pseudo-God. But we can’t afford to fail, so before we make a move, we need more intelligence. What happened after Yaha arrived here?" Leng Kai asked.
"That was two years ago, maybe even earlier. Suddenly, a Superpower Special Department appeared on Kongse’s side. She went to the city’s hospital and cured everyone," Ming Yueqing said.
"How many people did she bring with her?" Leng Kai asked.
"Just her alone, everyone remembers it clearly. She was barefoot, wearing a thin long gown, looking like a monk, but she was too beautiful..." Ming Yueqing said.
"Just one person? Something’s off. Her power can’t directly heal injuries and diseases; it can only transfer diseases from one person to another," Leng Kai said.
Ming Yueqing shook her head and said, "She healed them directly. I have no reason to lie, and I definitely wouldn’t mistake it, as I myself was once blessed by her; she cured my breast cancer."
Leng Kai frowned and pondered, then said, "Hmm... that means her power has changed, possibly related to the Red Field. What happened next? How did she suddenly take over your country?"
"She went to Six-faced God Mountain, but you know, many followers of Pseudo-Gods had already started calling it Divine Might Mountain by then. She built a house on the mountain peak, treated everyone in the country for free, and that year, at least half of the people in the country went to that mountain, and indeed, she cured everyone," Ming Yueqing recounted.
Leng Kai didn’t interrupt; he knew there would be a twist.
"Then... one day, several cities at the foot of the mountain started experiencing an epidemic outbreak, almost simultaneously, every imaginable contagious disease broke out, and the scope and speed of the diseases’ spread were gathering and expanding. At that time, more people rushed to the mountain seeking her help without any hesitation," Ming Yueqing explained.
"From that day on, did she kill everyone using diseases?" Leng Kai asked.
"She said she had found a way to cure the disease of ’death’. That was by letting the physical body die and the soul be free... The zombies you see are the result of that. They don’t think they’re dead. They retain their memories from when they were alive, unchanged, and this is the most terrifying part—they drag their rotting bodies, yet unaware, and still desperately seeking out their former loved ones, trying to drag them into their midst..." Ming Yueqing said.
"The army of zombies, I understand now. This is how her army originated; she deceived everyone, turning the people of Chicken Snake Country into her war machines!" Leng Kai stated.
Ming Yueqing remembered her own husband and son and couldn’t help but tear up, but with a resolute expression, she said, "I must kill Yaha, to avenge my family. The women here have also lost their husbands and children because of her. These elderly folks have been living in sorrow ever since. They always want to go back, looking for their children, and I’ve argued countless times—they’re already dead... Now, they’re monsters inheriting our loved ones’ memories!"
"We haven’t had a combat record with these zombies yet, so we don’t know whether they are afraid of bullets or not. Moreover, our Superpower Special Department is short-staffed and can’t afford casualties. Have you fought with them?" Leng Kai asked.
"No, we were unarmed at that time, and besides, the fleeing people weren’t resolute. After all, she didn’t kill those people but just embraced them and took them away. Many lacked the will and just followed," Ming Yueqing explained.
"Those taken away will be transferred to Heiside State, and if nothing goes wrong, they’ll soon become a part of His army," Leng Kai said.
