I Am An Illegitimate Child With A Legitimate Reason For Revenge-Chapter 251: The birthday celebration
"Jane, what else are you not telling me?" Alexa asked and Jane, who had her eyes darted away, looked at her and sighed.
"Nothing." She said, "I’ve told you pretty much all of it."
"How can I believe that?" Alexa asked. "Just look at the things you’ve been hiding. You... You jumped off a building."
"Technically Maxwell was the one who jumped off." She said, hoping to lighten her blame but Alexa only got angrier and yelled her name.
"Jane."
"I know, I know. Look, it’s not like we wanted to do those dangerous things. Circumstances just forced us into it."
"Dangerous. Very dangerous." Alexa said and placed her on her head. "How could you do that?"
"Hey, don’t beat yourself up. I’m fine, aren’t I?"
Alexa raised her head, showing the fear she had in her face.
"Are you scared for me?" Jane asked with a cheeky smile, causing Alexa to frown.
"What? Am I supposed to laugh? My friend went through a life-and-death situation for me, do you expect me to laugh over it? This isn’t some movie, it’s real, and one wrong move, you..." Her hand trembled. "You could’ve died."
"But luckily," she took Alexa’s hand and smiled. "I survived."
"You and your dumb smile." Jane chuckled but then Alexa’s little smile fell. "I still can’t believe Daniel cheated on you for all the years you dated. That’s so wrong."
"Pft, I know right? Even I can’t believe it." She laughed and though she was taking it to be such a light issue, Alexa knew it wasn’t as simple as the surface portrayed.
"So, your relationship with Maxwell... I still don’t understand it."
"Well," Jane rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly. "I already told you. It looked like we were already getting close over here before we went off to Germany. I don’t have a problem being close to him but the guy has no self-consciousness. He does things his own way and I wonder if he’s just dumb or utterly stupid when it comes to relationships that might or might not affect his marriage." She sighed. "I pity him, though. It’s thanks to his inability to think like a normal person. But he should at least put his wife into consideration in all that he does."
"Hm, that’s a bad thing." Alexa said, placed her hand on her chin and started thinking. ’If he has little to no self-consciousness of his surroundings and takes his relationship with Jane as nothing, whereas it shows differently in everyone’s eyes then,’ she looked up. ’It’s going to take a really bad turn for his marriage.’
"Just hope Paige won’t misunderstand." Jane muttered. "For now, I’ll try to give him as much space as I can. Let’s not make things difficult."
"I think that’s for the best right now." Alexa nodded to this.
The guests slowly arrived and as they kept trooping into the venue, Alexa became confused. There were so many people invited to Rachael’s birthday party. So many big and affluent people and they were all people she did not know.
Wait, why were there so many people? The tables and chairs were much but she didn’t think there would be actual people to occupy them.
What was Raymond thinking? Rachael wasn’t his real daughter. He should save such preparations and arrangements for his daughter in the future. Or was it that he was really planning to take her child as his? Was he going to adopt Rachael?
That shouldn’t be the case, right? Well, what about his reputation? This would make people talk behind his back and bring up so many speculations and side stories. This was a mess.
But other than that, she looked down at her dress. She was dressed rather plainly and wondered if she should’ve prepared more. Well, she wasn’t expecting such a big celebration so it wasn’t her fault.
"Don’t worry, you look great." Jane said. She had taken a seat next to her. Alexa smiled and mouthed a thank you. Then, she started searching around with her eyes.
Slowly, she saw people whom she was familiar with. Well, they were all people she knew. Maxwell, and then Steve, coming in with Romeo in his arms, and lastly Paige.
Alexa noticed how Paige hesitated to sit next to Maxwell for a second but acted naturally and sat next to him anyway. But it was cause to wonder if things were getting that bad already.
She glanced at Jane who seemed to have noticed and was clenching her hands under the table with her lips pursed. She didn’t know if this was entirely her fault but she knew for a fact that it all steamed up from Maxwell’s interaction with her.
I mean, Maxwell literally ignored Paige for a few seconds because he was too busy teasing Jane and that had never happened before. Maxwell would never ignore Paige’s call even for a second, no matter what it was.
He was like a puppy who immediately responded to its master’s call as soon as they heard their voice.
They both sighed. Things were really not looking good.
A moment later, after the guests had settled down and had their seats...
"Tak-tak." That was the sound of someone tapping on the head of a microphone. It was followed by a still siren that wasn’t loud enough to irritate the ears or too low that it couldn’t catch the guest’s attention.
"Can I get your attention, please?" Everyone turned their heads to the podium and saw the person standing on it to be Raymond.
As soon as they saw it was him, everyone went silent and he continued.
"Thank you for being here today. It’s a special day since apparently, it’s my daughter’s birthday." He announced and Alexa gritted her teeth. She did not know what to think anymore.
Whether Raymond was going to adopt Rachael or if he was going to ask her hand in marriage so he could legally have Rachael as his daughter. No matter what he wanted to do, she was not really in a place to reject because he had already done so much for them and shown that he could be very reliable and responsible.
The guests were thrown into a little frenzy, whispering to one another and wondering if those rumors about Raymond Stein having an Illegitimate child were true because apparently, he was a widower and currently not married.
"Some may think she’s my Illegitimate daughter, some, a kid I adopted or picked up from nowhere. You can think whatever you want because I can’t be bothered to explain, but," his eyes suddenly turned grim and cold, and an eerie air filled the room, coming from his cold gaze, "...that’s all you’re allowed to do. Think. Keep thinking and don’t let a single word of speculation come out from your mouth. At least, not to my hearing or my daughter’s hearing or her mother’s either. If you do," he squinted his eyes, sending goosebumps over the many affluent guests that were present.
They were also big people in the country yet they were scared with the single threatening gaze this young man was throwing at them. The perks of being the wealthiest man in the country.
But all of a sudden, Raymond’s cold gaze disappeared and he smiled, gazing at his daughter at the far end as she majestically walked into the hall with her own two little feet, in her beautiful peach gown that made her look like a little rose. She was the celebrant so she had to make sure to look the part and not let anyone look down on her. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
"I guess I’ll have to leave the consequences to your imagination as well. So for now, give a round of applause for my daughter, Rachael."
He announced and the guests started clapping. They were shocked by what they heard but they ended up clapping, not having the guts to offend Raymond.
