How To Survive A Calamity-Chapter 153: True Fear [4]
"Alex, have you ever felt fear?"
The strange book in Nicodemus’s raised hand fluttered suddenly as dark, ominous black shadows spread out from it into the surroundings. The black mist of his outfit rippled again and surged, spreading outward into the vicinity.
Suddenly the dark, empty gaze in Nicodemus’s eyes deepened and seemed to devour light. Two faint flicker of red illuminated at their very depths.
"!!"
Nicodemus’s words resounded deeply in the minds and hearts of Alex and the others and Alexander froze.
The darkness surged forward suddenly like a tide for Alex and he felt his world suddenly flip over and contort.
The last thing Alexander registered as the darkness rushed and devoured his vision were a pair of sinister glowing reddish orange eyes and a bloodcurdling whisper like a raspy sneer.
Then his body trembled from head to toe like he was dazed.
’What?’
Unconsciously, Alexander took an involuntary step backwards. As he moved, his actions were rigid like a poorly oiled machine doll.
The wide walls and tall ceilings of the dark labyrinth ceased and vanished from around him and was suddenly replaced by and endless vacuum of darkness amd nothingness.
Even the ground underneath his feet had been replaced by a thick darkness that made it hard to tell where it began, and where what ended.
All of a sudden Alex found himself standing in a vacant space — an empty world were nothingness, but himself alone stood.
It was cold and empty.
Profound and mysterious.
Solitary and suffocating.
Alex felt his breathing falter, becoming deeper and ceasing at the same time.
The darkness around him seemed to grow heavier and compressed around his figure. It felt like the space was shrinking closely around him, making the world feel heavier and more suffocating to breathe
"Haahh... Haahh..."
The dark, empty world seeming to divert all countless and unseen eyes and gazes against his sole form, boring an invisible and overwhelming pressure against him from all directions.
"Haah... Haah... Haaahh..."
There was nothing to see in the dark empty space, but it felt like a thousand unseen gazes were cast over from the pitch darkness, gazing overwhelmingly at Alex.
Confusion and uncertainty clawed at his mind.
One moment he had been standing in the labyrinth, and the next it was like it was all a dream.
Like he had suddenly been forced to awaken to reality.
His reality...
It was dark.
"Haah... Haaahh...!"
Alex’s reality...
It was cold and ensnaring.
Alex felt claustrophobic, finding it harf to breathe as space continued to tighten around him.
It felt like the nonexistent walls were slowly closing in around him, crushing him from all sides.
"Haah... Haah..."
Alexander’s breathing paced rapidly. His heart raced so loudly he could hear it pounding in his ears.
Them something significant happened.
The darkness rippled, like dropping a pebble in a still lake.
Then the whole world surged; the nonexistent ground underneath his feet suddenly rose, surging as well, turning over and the space stretched suddenly.
Alex fell backwards through the air uncontrollably as the space continued to twist and pull towards the opposite direction.
It was like wrinkling a fabric, or a piece of cloth.
Before Alex could recover his bearing, he suddenly heard a dark and familiar voice.
"Have you ever felt fear?"
’N-Nico..?’
That voice... He shuddered uncontrollably.
The world trembled in accordance. A vast and humongous figure suddenly rose from the darkness forming a monstrous outline over the horizon.
A pair of sinister red and orange eye flashed from the depths
Then,
"Show me where your true fears lie, Alex."
"Be welcomed by me,"
’What..?’
"Embraced by me. One within me."
Alex continued to hear the haunting voice from beyond the void breathing down his neck as he tumbled. An inexplicable sense of dread and fear washed through his body suddenly. Experience tales at novelbuddy
His fingers trembled.
His eyes shook.
Horror emanated from his gaze, the cold heavy words made his heart and mind raced with desperation.
Fear.
It was fear that didn’t make sense. Mindless horror and uncontrollable dread.
Then the large monstrous figure of the depths moved and the darkness surged forward at Alex to drown him.
Alex clenched his fist forward as if to grip the darkness.
"Damn Demon...!"
He gritted his teeth. Defiance flashed through his eyes.
Alex forced control of his body and retained balance in the tumbling space. Cold sweat was beading down the side of his paling face and his fingers continued to tremble.
But a terrifying glint sharpened in his commonly calm and deep blue eyes.
With but a mere thought, a long sword appeared in his grasp and Alex braced for impact against the approaching darkness.
Alex raised his sword as the tidal wave of darkness surged rapidly at him like a flood.
"You want to know what fear is that badly?"
Alex glared menacingly, placing a foot forward for confrontation.
"Come," veins bulged down his arms underneath his sleeves. His expression was like of a ravenous beast.
"I’ll show it to you!"
Without realising, something incandescent and bright flashed in his eyes as the torrential flood of darkness smashed against his body like a crushing tide.
-Boom!
"Ukh-!!"
Alex fought back and resisted desperately against the pressure with his sword raised before him.
He struggled to stand firm like a rock cutting apart a raging river or darkness as various overwhelming pressure and emotions mounted against his mind like boulders, making his expression contort and twist ferociously.
He heard the overbearing voice speak from beyond the void again.
"Tenacious will. Your resistance is impressive." It was cold and impassive.
Alex felt the pressure on his mind mount even more as he resisted still.

"But you tremble, therefore i win."
But it was futile.
Alexander faltered and the small gap bridged the conclusion. The darkness instantly broke through all of his defences with renewed intensity as it smashed into him, drowning Alex deep within its unending waves.
"-No!"
Alex was effortlessly swept away by the unrelenting tide, crushed within its raging pressure.
Fear overwhelmed his mind as he felt his consciousness flicker.
It was at that moment,
Certain scenes of a not so distant past...
Flashes of fragmented memories raced through his mind.
Horrible scenes hidden away in his mind, but unsealed in the depths of his heart resurfaced.
Alexander’s eyes widened.
Then they trembled.
"No... He barely whispered in a vain voice.
The dark empty world around him ceased and was swiftly replaced.
Instead Alex registered a familiar dark crimson sky hanging over him all of a sudden.
The familiar putrid smell of burning flesh and boiling blood invaded his nose.
A familiar scene unraveled before his eyes.
There was a burning manor devoured by flames coloured the crimson red of blood that tainted the dark sky with its ominous touch and made it bleed.
The surroundings were in devastation and ruin; pools of blood formed vast morbid puddles in the shattered ground, and corpses were half buried in the tainted soil.
"Ah..." Alex whimpered like a broken machine.
"Tell me, Alex."
Alex gaped with wide, empty eyes a more the haunting sight that lay before him.
"Have you felt fear?"
